Diets Work: Way or No Way?
@brooke, reading your original post made me think of one thing: "French Women Don't Get Fat" - really, your lifestyle seems to be very typical of the one mentioned in the book.
I lost weight on Weight Watchers. It could be construed as a diet, but it's meant to be a lifestyle change. Which is why it works for me. Not to say that I didn't gain some weight back. Sure I did. When I was stressed, I gained 15 lbs. Started measuring food again to remind myself what a normal portion is, lost it. Gained weight when I had a baby. Used Weight Watchers again to lose the last 20 lbs (had to give up that chocolate habit).
Having a healthy lifestyle is all well and good, but most everyone still puts on weight. Our metabolism slows down as we age if we aren't diligent about maintaining muscle mass and activity. The amount we eat gradually increases over time. Then we all need to smack ourselves and say, "oops, need to regroup". And we need to do it before those 10 lbs turn into 50.
How was your (wedding) food?
Our wedding food was quite awesome (12 years ago). I've also been to a few weddings since where the food was excellent.
Most is just okay. Some has been downright bad. My good friend JUST got married and gushed about the food - we dont' have the same taste in food - there was so much pepper on the chicken I couldn't eat it. And I *LIKE* pepper.
The food at my family weddings are all done by the same caterer. You remember elementary school, and how Thanksgiving dinner was pressed sliced turkey on white bread with gravy, mashed potatoes, and corn? Yeah, that's about right.
Who Should Pay at a Birthday Dinner?
This is just crazy because of the sheer cost involved. I used to go to brunch with some friends, but after about 3-4 times of getting stiffed, I just stopped. It was fine when one friend with a calculator (yep, an engineer) would do the math for everyone - but he stopped coming.
I also used to go to Mom's Night Out. There is a large variety of incomes with the moms...some have very little family income and some have a lot. You could tell - some were only willing to go out to the "free" things (dancing at a club with no cover charge). Whomever would plan these things for dinner, however, picked REALLY expensive restaurants. And sometimes the restaurant would pad the bill. I love Mom's night, but I don't want to spend $50-60 for a meal and one glass of wine.

I just started using Groupon. They just came to my local town. I used my first one yesterday, in fact. They state right on the printout to tip on the full amount (which is the right thing to do).
In any event, I don't mind being considered a "coupon clipper", even though I don't clip coupons for anything else. We don't generally eat out very much, and when we do, we go to the same old places. I used this coupon yesterday, and it was awesome! Lunch for 3 for $17. And I love the food (local and fresh).
Now, whenever I am really craving a good salad or sandwich (which is often), I have another place that I can go to. Sure, it might be only once a month or two. But as far as getting more business, it worked. This particular restaurant has been around for at least 15 years, but they have improved their menu recently.
Also, I assume they can limit the number of Groupons they give out? Like, we need at least 10 people to sign up, but we're limiting it to 50. Of course, you are probably more liking to get the coupon clippers, and less likely to get the people who want to try a new restaurant.
