I admit vodka soda or gin and soda/ tonic are my go-to drinks (in the summer) when I'm unfamiliar with the bartender or in more of a dive bar. While I don't share the vitriol of the previous poster, I agree that many cocktails are too sweet (and/or boozy) to want more than one or two, so if I'm in a setting where I'm out with friends and we're there for the long haul, vodka soda is a good option. And let's not neglect budget as a factor- if I'm not in a position to splurge on $12-$15 drinks and have to go with a cheaper option, you're darn right I don't want to taste it. :)
I also enjoy a wide variety of classic cocktails and liquors on a regular basis, Manhattans included. In the scenario above, I would have been the bourbon drinker.
