Fluffernutter: Massachusetts' State Sandwich?

The other Texans have beat me to saying brisket. :) But it's rather iconic, and you can find it all across the state, so it makes sense.

Serious Cocktails: The Cocktail Bucket List Meme

I've had four. Granted, I haven't been drinking long (I'm 24, and I kept it legal) and I'm more of a beer girl anyway, but dang, I've got a long way to go. Also, now I totally want a G&T after reading that.

Cake Shake from Squareburger in Philadelphia

This sounds ridiculously good. :) There's a place in Waco, Texas that does something similar to this, but with PIE. Like, whole pieces of pie. I've always been too afraid for my arteries to try one. ;)

Grocery Ninja: Korean Roasted Seaweed, Kim

Aha. Good to know! (I was born a Korean Kim, so I always wondered where the name came from.)

When it's hot. . .

Tacos are always good, especially when they're really spicy (helps you sweat, which helps cool you off).

Egg in a hole, because THAT'S WHAT IT IS. :)

I think I might need to have one later.

Who's The Most Serious Eater In Your Life?

My brother--who has 4% body fat, by the way--can load up a full plate of food at Thanksgiving or Christmas, and then eat all of it in less than 10 minutes. True story.

OLD SCHOOL! Throwback to my evangelical poster child days. Now (and I'm still an evangelical) I find the logic somewhat faulty, but I still find a fond place in my heart filled by the Donut Man and company.

Grocery Ninja: Korean Roasted Seaweed, Kim

So all the Korean Kims are really just named after roasted seaweed? ;-) (Or is it the other way around?)

This looks really good. I'll have to hunt some down.

What Do You Put on Your Biscuit?

Butter and jam, or gravy. OR--possibly my favorite breakfast, even though I only have it every couple of months or so--a Chick-Fil-A chicken biscuit. Oh MAN, I love those. I feel sorry for all the people who don't have a Chick-Fil-A nearby.

Serious Eats: Sex Foods

My friend and a guy friend of hers (who has a girlfriend) have forbidden one another from drinking alcohol in the same COUNTY because it will inevitably lead to them making out with one another, and thus the wrath of his girlfriend.

Ketchup on Hash Browns: Way or No Way?

Absolutely. Not a whole lot, just about a 1/2 tablespoon or so, but mixed in. (I like kinda-soggy hash browns, I guess.) I'm weird, though, and I'll put ketchup on baked potatoes on occasion...

Austin, TX--just moved here from Houston in August, lived in St. Louis until I was six, born in Seoul (haven't been back yet).

The UK's Favorite Dunking Biscuits, Plus Dunking Tips

Mmm, chocolate digestives. :) I haven't had the chocolate Hobnobs of which you speak, but the plain ones are good dunking material, too.

@kevster It's a textural/taste thing. Some cookies are kind of boring and dry if you don't dunk them, but they get transformed into something interesting when slightly wet. I can't explain it if you're not a dunker, I guess.

SOS (.... on a shingle)-- Creamed Hamburg

Aw, my grandpa used to make this all the time when I was growing up. Memories. I think he just made a cream gravy, though, and put the hamburger in there. We ate it on toast. Awesome. My grandpa passed away ten years ago and I haven't eaten it since, but I might have to try it now. Thanks for the memory.

Is anyone here giving up a certain food for Lent?

I'm giving up caffeine. I work at Starbucks. This is gonna be interesting. :D

I'm Presbyterian, so it's not mandatory for me, but it's a good form of self-discipline and preparation for Holy Week. I also think it's a form of countercultural action, since we live in a society that thrives on consumption and instant gratification; it's a way of saying, no, I don't always have to have what I want when I want it. I don't have to let my desires control me, but instead be ruled by the Lord.

Alice Waters Proposes New School Lunch Program

I agree with a lot of people that this is a cultural problem that won't be fixed by just shoving more money and programs into the system. Kids will eat better when that starts at HOME. Americans have expected our school systems and other social institutions to raise our children for us instead of taking responsibility for them ourselves. It does take a community to raise a child, but it also takes parents as well. Best way to change the current system? Send your kids to school with good food. Don't create the demand. Eat well at home.

Anyone cooking up Mardi Gras?

I'm doing the pancakes, which is definitely more Shrove Tuesday, but I'm a high-church Protestant and that's just how we roll. ;) But they will be damn good pancakes. Might do something involving rum and bananas. We shall see.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

A Hole in One!!!! My grandfather used to make these for me when I was a very little girl, visiting him in Lancaster, PA. He was not a golfer. He was first-generation American of Swedish descent, who had grown up in Salt Lake City, Utah.

What Do You Put on Your Biscuit?

I realize this is an old topic but I had to comment. Before I fell victim to a most unpleasant allergy to tomatoes I always enjoyed tomato gravy and biscuits. Now its butter and maple syrup. I also have to agree with many of ya'll....a good plain biscuit is its own type of heaven.

Uncommon food allergies that nobody believes?

I am allergic to raw mushrooms, can't eat anything that has been cross contaminated with it. I ate some fresh veggies that had a few flecks of mushroom in it that I didn’t see and within 5 minutes it had triggered my asthma, my mouth swelled up and the lips, tongue and all the rest of the symptoms that go with it. I can eat them when they are cooked though and I now love canned mushroom, since I can’t eat the raw thing anymore. I can’t even handle raw ones (my husband hates mushrooms) so I can’t eat them freshly cooked unless I go out.

I have found that since I have given birth to my twins 3 years ago that my allergies and asthma have gotten exponentially worse. I can’t even be in the same room with cats, dogs, any animal with hair. My allergies to the great outdoors have had the same consequence. I also have developed an allergy to Celery, I have the same reactions as I have to mushrooms but I stopped eating it, so I haven’t found out if it gets worse with every exposure.

My main concern right now is that I have a reaction when I eat in combination tomatoes and bread. I can eat bread alone and tomatoes but when they are eaten in the same meal I get an overwhelming reaction to throw up. It can be as mild as a slight queasiness or I can start to throw up. I have looked and looked but I can’t find anything anywhere that mentions allergies when foods are combined. Since the birth of my twins the tomato and bread reaction has gotten worse as well. I have never cared for pizza because it always left me feeling sick afterwards which I just thought that it was the grease in it.

I feel like an idiot when I say anything about the t&b thing....I know it is not in my head but nobody has heard of it and people just think I am being picky. Since I was about 13 apples have made me feel the same way. Sometimes the reaction is worse than other so I will every once and a while eat a bit of an apple but never a whole one. The T&B reaction is worse than the apple one though because my mildest reaction to T&B is the worst I have had to apples.

Fluffernutter: Massachusetts' State Sandwich?

I'm from MA and I can say this is probably the best decision the legislature has made in a very long time. I also love it because it is just so wonderfully politically incorrect. Just think some places would want to tax it. Of course, since the state is almost bankrupt, that may be next.

I am originally from California and I agree avocado has to be on any sandwich from there. But I really love French Dips!

I now live in Raleigh, NC and I agree with both on the mater sandwich with Duke's mayo and/or homemade pimento cheese on white bread as well as a really good pulled pork sandwich on a bun with slaw. Hold the sauce
as my tummy won't take it.

And I will chime in on the Necco wafers as well, I like the chocolate ones the best and they are the hardest to find!

Even though I've never had one, I must agree that NJ's official sandwich should be Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a hard roll. They're ubiquitous here, but don't exist anywhere else.

Cake Shake from Squareburger in Philadelphia

Yum. I just moved to Philly this week and am excited to hunt down one of these.

And FYI- Flip Burger in Atlanta has a Krispy Kreme milkshake. It, too, is a delicious pastry-infused confection, served boiling with liquid nitrogen. I'd recommend that to anyone.
