Father's Day Book Giveaway: 'Man with a Pan'

My wonderful husband and father of my child, who taught me that cooking can be fun, not just a means to an end.

June Bon Appetit Cover: Daring or Dreadful?

@Potluckcraft - I agree that they were going for a particular aesthetic effect... I just don't think they really succeeded. To me, that style doesn't really belong on a food magazine.

I did end up liking more recipes in this issue than in the previous months' magazines, but I'm still not totally sold on Rapoport's new vision.

Go to Zingerman's Deli and be amazed by the variety of what they offer. If you're limited on meals in A2, I'd skip the Roadhouse.

You MUST go to Jerusalem Garden for the falafel, baklava, and hummus. Don't let the construction on the street deter you: it is AMAZING.

And the best campus pizza for after the bar? Backroom Pizza.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

The smell of bacon wafting up to my childhood room, my dad downstairs in his ratty blue bathrobe cooking bacon on Christmas morning and giving little pieces to the cat.

A tie: Ooh La La cookies (the best oatmeal cookies ever), and a new ginger cookie recipe I tried last week. Yum!

Farmington Hills, Michigan: Tomatoes Apizza, a Gem Hidden in Plain Sight

I thought I was seeing things when I read MY town's name on Serious Eats! I'm excited to try this place out. Thanks for featuring such a local (to me) spot!

Bread Baking: Orange Quick Bread

I just baked this today. I was a little concerned when the milk separated after I added the marmalade, and then there didn't seem to be enough liquid for all the flour, but it baked up just fine. Thank you for a very tasty recipe!

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Culinary Adventure Society

Watching in horror as my classmates on a high school Spanish class trip turned up their noses at paella in Madrid. I ate three plates of it, picking the clams and calamari off of several more. It was delicious, and twelve years later, I'm still appalled that they wouldn't even try it.

Cocktails and Spirits with Paul Clarke: Women and Whiskey

My husband is a bourbon fiend (his present to himself for finishing grad school was a bottle of Booker's), but I only (oddly) enjoy the smell. However, several of my best girl friends are major fans, and we keep saying that we'll do a Kentucky bourbon distillery road trip where I'll DD, being the only non-enthusiast in the group. At least it works out for them; I'll stick to beer!

monster zukes?

I'll second @betteirene. Mock Apple Pie is definitely the way to go for monster zucchini.

I usually make mine into more of a cobbler, though, because I'm crap at rolling out dough. Just use the dough recipe from your fave baking cookbook (I'm partial to Alton Brown's) and make the filling the same way betteirene suggests.

jazzing up white rice

Try a little grated ginger, or substituting sherry for some of the water/stock. Gives it a little more oomph.

Cook the Book: 'Zingerman's Guide to Better Bacon'

Because my dad used to make big breakfasts on Saturdays when I was growing up, and the smell of bacon flavors every precious memory I have of those mornings.

In Season: Summer Squash

Mock Apple Pie: God's gift to over-zealous backyard zucchini growers. Pie crust of your choice. Filling: peel and seed the zucchini, slice it into apple-sized pieces, and saute it with lemon juice, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar, and some flour to tighten it up.

The most memorable would be my first, on a date with a metrosexual foodie who always made me feel so pedestrian. The relationship with him didn't last long, but Tapas and I remain good friends!

Tell Your Asparagus Story

For those who live in metro Detroit, you MUST visit the Long Family Farm in Commerce Township. Their asparagus is fresh-picked daily, absolutely the best I've ever had, and usually around $1.50-$2/lb! Get there right at 3:00 pm, though, or it'll sell out before you can blink. Visit their website!

@Susquehanna: as an English teacher, I love, love, love that you followed proper MLA format for your citation! It absolutely geeked me out to see it. Thank you!

Cook the Book: Eugenia Bone's 'Well-Preserved'

My grandmother used to make an orange rhubarb jelly that was to die for: a sour/tart marmalade. Unfortunately, her recipe is lost in the ether. If I could replicate it, I'd be a happy foodie!

Leftovers: The Day's Stray Links

Re: Video Game - Hasn't this already been done? Oh, wait. It was a spoof video on YouTube! It was only a matter of time before someone thought this was actually a good idea.

Inside the Peep Factory, Bethlehem, Penn.

The photo on the right (all the Peeps on the conveyor belt) reminds me of the marching workers in Metropolis... kinda creepy, actually! Who knew that Peeps could symbolize the marginalization of the working class?
