SE Staff Picks: Our Favorite Food Souvenirs to 'Smuggle' Home

Don't even think of smuggling food in your carry on. Put everything in your check-in luggage and you should be fine. If it's something in a bottle just make sure to wrap it nicely in a plastic bag or zip loc just incase it breaks. I always make my cousins from Paris bring all types of cheeses. Nothing like the feeling of reaching home with a bag filled with "illegal" stuff. luv it.

The Vegetarian Option: Cafe Himalaya

I'm so glad to see a review for Cafe Himalaya here. It's one of my favorite veg. restaurants. Affordable and yummy food.

DjWackfriz, they don't use fish sauce.

I also recommend the Chili dofu (#19) and the veg. momos.

Served: The Ballsy Waitress

Wow! Is this article for real? I think it's just plain RUDE for a waiter to run back and question the tip amount or demand more, no matter how nicely you do it & regardless of how nice you thought you were. Frankly, I would NEVER return to a place if a waiter there did that to me & I'd even report them to the manager. I tip depending on the service and overall experience but the only time I had a waiter run after me was when I was in high school. It was at a small restaurant in chinatown and I feel bad for the fellow now that I look back but I was with a bunch of broke high school students...

Chinatown for kids

definitely take them to chinatown icecream factory. Also, look into Pearl River Mart (477 Broadway) for shoppping. they have a variety of fun, cute stuff that i'm sure your young visitors will enjoy.

Koreatown NYC Restaurant - Suitable for Vegetarian

I haven't had a lot of luck with vegetarian dishes at Korean restaurants so I usually get the Bibimbap without meat. It's a rice dish with vegetables and egg and most korean restaurants have it on the menu. Make sure you get the HOT bibimbap. I usually go to Han Bat on 35th or Wonjo on 32nd. Haven't tried BCD Tofu House yet but i think it's supposed to be more veg-friendly.

Off the Beaten Path: Himalayan Yak Makes a Comeback

i'm hoping to trek there sometime soon. the cheura looks delish. have you tried the momos at Himalayan Cafe? (1st Street, bet 1st Ave & Ave A). just a bare-bones place in terms of decoration/ambiance but offers great homemade style Himalayan food.
