here's an alternative -- truffled egg toast at Inoteka... it's really delicious.

Fleur de Sel, superb French cooking in an intimate room for (NY) reasonable prices.
Back room at Tia Pol!
CRAFT is really fun with 4 or more people - you can order a wide variety of food, the servers are knowledgeable and friendly and the wine list is great.
You can always eat in the Tavern Room at Gramercy. It's first come, first served. I like the food and atmosphere in there better than the main dining room. If you arrive early or late (6ish, 9:30ish) the wait isn't usually more than fifteen minutes or so. But if you arrive just after everyone's arrived for the first seating, you'll be waiting a good hour. So it's important to plan accordingly.
If reservations are a must, you might want to try Blue Hill or Mas (Farmhouse), both in the Village. They're two of my favorites in the City.
