Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

i remember watching my dad cooking from the silver palate, but the first cookbook that was just my very own was a copy of the moosewood cookbook, which went with me to college.

Cook the Book: 'Second Helpings of Roast Chicken'

i cook with garlic at almost every meal, including breakfast. close runner-up would probably be corn tortillas, oddly. as for what always, always goes bad in my kitchen: potatoes. they sit in the basket for weeks, sprouting from their eyes and turning green as the cause of my utter neglect, every time i bother to buy them.

are you really supposed to cook the shrimp for 6-8 minutes *per side*?? that's longer than i'd cook a thick steak.

Sunchang gochujang...korean red pepper paste.

gojuchang is also great on eggs; it's like a way more savory version of sriracha.

What is the worst meal you politely ate as a guest?

a friend once baked several apple pies for my freshman dorm-mates... his recipe consisted of dumping a bag of white flour, a bag of sugar, and a quart of milk into a stock pot, stirring to mix, and then dumping the lumpy mess into several pie plates. he topped each "crust" (about 1" thick, each of them) with raw sliced apples and more of his dough...they were each about 3 inches thick, completely solid. he baked them for probably an hour and half, patting them down with water throughout the baking time to get them to crisp up... needless to say, i passed on taking a slice.

my boyfriend once entered an informal drinking contest and prepared by consuming an entire roast chicken. it kept him sober for something like 8 hours.

My mom was stuck cooking for us when I was growing up, but I really learned by watching my dad. And from obsessively reading cookbooks, which I still do.

my answer is always the same: bagels or bialys, all manner of smoked fish (whitefish, lox, sable, sturgeon, herring, etc etc), a schmear, sliced cukes, tomatoes, and red onion, coffee, and a black and white cookie.

Bagels, bialys, or onion twists and a whole spread of smoked fish (whitefish, lox, sable, sturgeon, baked salmon, herring in sour cream). Sliced tomato if it's in season, cucumber and red onion. Hot coffee. A black and white or a jelly donut for dessert. And then a trip back to the sofa for a nap.

a warm bialy with cream cheese and a variety of smoked fish; sliced ripe tomato, red onion, and kalamata olives; a fantastic chocolate egg cream; and then for dessert a cup of crappy coffee (because i truly find my hometown's coffee to be endearingly terrible) and either a few rugelach from zabar's or rainbow cookies from veniero's.

About: i'm a tiny person with an enormous appetite -- for people, ideas, words, bad jokes, and tasty treats.

Favorite foods: i have a passion for the savory, the stinky, the preserved, the pickled, the smoked and brined, the less-easily loveable foods on the spectrum.

Last bite on earth: i'll be up till the wee hours tonight trying to answer this one. and i probably still won't be able to.
