Lemonade in Winter!

So as I browsed around Whole Foods today, I came across some uber-soft cute little meyer lemonade. Needless to say, I tossed one in my basket and kept on isle cruising. When I got back to my dorm, it hit me...um- what am I going to DO with this lemon? Put it on my salad? Toss it with salt on steamed spinach? Or...make lemonade! Yes yes it is about 20 degrees outside, and lemonade is more popular in the warmer weather. However, I tossed it in a glass of ice water, threw in some sweetener, mixed, and sipped! YUM! What are some other uses ya'll have for meyer lemons that are simple quick and easy...you know, for us college students living in dorms with miniscule, microscpic kitchens (hehe).

Truffles!

Ok, heres the deal...I've been hearing all about truffle mushrooms and have been wanting to taste them! I know I know, I may be the last person on earth that hasn't yet indulged in the pleasure that is a truffle, SO- share your experiences! Can anyone clue me in on the taste, texture, and what I should look for in purchasing truffles? PS: Perhaps one main reason I have not tried truffles is...I am a college student- on a budget!!

Kale Chips: Healthy Alternative to Potato Chips

The truly are delicious! Heres another variation: instead of kale, try baby regular and curly Bok choy. In addition to tossing with salt and oil (or cooking spray, which I prefer), add into the mix paprika...not only will they taste like chips, but they'll have a barbecue flavored undertone as well. Great tasting and good for you too- score!

Are you sick of winter? What is your ideal summertime meal?

slice of whole grain bread, topped with sprouts, avocado, tomato, red onions, black beans and chickpeas! crispy, crunchy, soft and chewy. Admittedly a bit messy- but a delish light summer lunch! I'll take that with a good book, a hammock, and 70 degree weather ANYDAY! especially with this frigid coldfront we are having in NYC right now- boo!

I top my cereal with _____

My favorite breakfast..going on 4 years now...is cottage cheese mixed with maple syrup or honey, topped with grapenuts cereal and blueberries ( ok, I know you asked what we top our cereal with, but I flipped it and told you what I top with cereal!)YUM!

Truffles!

The verdict is in! I tried a truffle, and was not as WOWED as I thought I'd be. It could be because I bought a jarred truffle, in its juices. I think the way to taste it is dry and grated. Anyhow..thats how it went. Nonetheless, I will still have some truffle with my dinner tonight. After all, I did pay $6.99- I've gotta make it worth it!

Restaurants in Paris?

I'm a flight attendant and go to Paris weekly. My absolute favorite bistrot is called Baribal, is not charming, and has the most magnificent food with incredibly low prices. They have gargantuan portions; some favorites are veal with roquefort sauce, lamb kidneys with mustard sauce, duck magret, lardon salad. Pasteur metro stop. Good markets are Poncelet Market (Terne metro stop)and it's not open Mondays; Roosevelt Market, also not open Mondays. L'ami Jean in the 15th on Malar is fantastic; just down a few doors is L'affriole, fantastic menu that changes almost as often as L'ami Jean. If you go to L'ami Jean make sure someone gets their signature rice pudding; you won't be disappointed. Another good restaurant is called Le Relais de Venise close to Congress. It's just off the Champs Elysees and has no menu. Patrons start to queue around 6:45pm for the first seating, and the only thing they serve is entrecote of beef with a mysterious tarragon sauce, hand-cut fries, and a simple salad. Seconds are automatically doled out without question, and you will want seconds. All that's required it how rare you enjoy your steak and what you'd like to sip. Have fun...

Vegetarian Challenge

Thanks for the feedback! I only picked one week, because my goal is to get people who are normally big eaters to give eating veggie a try. I figure that at this point they won't agree to do it forever, but maybe they could try it out for one week. My hope is that after a week of eating veggie, they'll ad a few regular vegetarian meals into their average week...

Truffles!

Not long ago, we purchased Truffle Salt at Dean & Deluca. It was one of those things I sampled, returned to, walked away, came back, walked away, came back and finally said "OK already, I give up! I'll buy it!!" The truffle taste lingered in my mouth the whole time I was in the store.

Beware of "sampling" truffles shaved onto a dish. That can be a pricey experiment.

Truffles!

I've had them a few times. It's really, really hard to describe the flavor. To me, they just taste like the earth. Not dirt, not soil, but the earth. It's the only thing I can come up with. They truly are, at least to me, indescribably delicious. Most truffle oils don't do them justice. that said, D'Artagnan makes a pretty decent one, which is ridiculously good drizzled on mashed potatoes or rice. Just a drizzle.

Are you sick of winter? What is your ideal summertime meal?

I'm not necessarily sick of winter food, but I am sure sick of winter SNOW! (I live in Chicago...sigh). But anyway, I could go for a summer caprese salad, some watermelon and a glass of lemonade right about now...

Truffles!

The best meal I may ...have ever eaten may have been a simple French omlete served with shaved fresh truffle at the restaurant La Beaugraviere in Mondragon, in southern France. Au pays de la Truffe(www.beaugraviere.com) The wine was from Gigondias, Domaine Les Palliets (?) I remember everything about that lunch with complete clarity, including the other diners how the waiter poured, as to taste something that devine will leave you in a transformed state....I am fortunate to eat many wonderful meals, but this is an sensory experience, its not about food artistry. It is a experience you must pursue if you are serious about food. I live in Oregon and cook with the Oregon truffles,(even just tonight grated on shrimp fra diavolo) we are extremely proud of them whether they will truely compete with the wild truffles of southern France, will be debated and tested for decades. You must try them and tell us what you think...

That's in the 3rd, isn't it? I haven't really gotten over that way much yet. It's such a big city, and there's so much to see and do... guess it's time to go back!

Are you sick of winter? What is your ideal summertime meal?

Well, amist making brioche for chocolate bread pudding for Valentines day, if there wasnt 10+ inches of snow on my doorstep right now, I would be in the freezing cold grilling steaks tomorrow for dinner. The most snow I will drag my prize grill out in is 2 inches. So, for tomorrow it is chicken breasts baked with garlic butter and lemon under the skins, roasted white and sweet potatoes, broccoli roasted with soy and sesame seeds and the bread pudding. South Beach be damned!

I really would sell my soul to the devil himself for a juicy tomato, still warm from the sun, the smell of the vine still on it and a basket of teensy fresh picked strawberries to nibble while dinner cooks. Hot corn slathered with butter, lime and cojita cheese and in ice cold margarita..fresh, no mix.

Sigh.

actually what i'm looking forward to is watching the progression of the crops at the greenmarket. first the ramps. then the sugar snaps. then the apricots. then the peaches. then the corn. then the tomatoes. then the cherries. then the berries. then the apples and pumpkins. i love to see different things come into season and then leave for the year.

it's so cold out today that i'm not craving anything except hot food. it would be the perfect day to make a few loaves of bread and some soup.
