'Where Can I Get Good Pizza in Baltimore?'

@DT - I noticed most of the places I listed were specialty pizza places... iggies, kyro & matthews.

Another I thought of is Fortunato Brothers Pizza on York Road. It is the best. They have NY Style that is truly NY Style, pizza rolls, calzones...everything pizza including a fantastic Sicilian slice! The best Sicilian I've had in Baltimore. nom.

'Where Can I Get Good Pizza in Baltimore?'

I have lived in Baltimore for 5 years and have yet to find fantastic pizza. Good NY style is nearly impossible to find. Here is my run down on a few places.

I like Iggies. I always get take and bake pizzas though. The pancetta is so incredibly smoky and good. The crust is like a cracker, no hole structure. But I am not viewing this as NY style, I am viewing it as cracker crust, and it's good. The sauce tastes like fresh tomatoes and they make their own mozzarella, which makes all the difference. The ingredients come together nicely.

Matthews gets bashed all the time. Eating at Matthews for the first time though made me ecstatic. I was so pleased to have finally found a pizza place that used good ingredients, at least they tasted superior. The crust is thick, kind of Chicago style...but not. The cheese is quite salty and gooey, and I love it. Chunky tomato sauce. That being said, it is horrible reheated or eaten cold. I only eat Matthews pizza in the restaurant, fresh from the oven.

Kyro pizza in Mt Vernon is pretty good too. When I lived there I ate it frequently. The white pizza is delish, extra ricotta! Yum! I can't remember if they have a brick oven??? The crust is good and puffy though, very close to NY Style and they have a great list of ingredients and strange combos.

I want to like Joe Squared, but I don't. The times I have eaten there my pizza has been cold! I'm not sure how this occurred, but it did. I believe they have a coal oven or brick so perhaps it's better now....I don't remember being impressed with their crust. At all.

In Hampden there is a little Italian Restaurant called Mama Cucina. It is some of the best NY Style pizza I've had in Baltimore. You can get a personal size that is pretty large and quite tasty. The sauce has a nice tomato bite and the cheese is salty (my fave). Order your pizza well done though, it's flippy and floppy without doing that.

Everywhere in Fells Point is gross, drunk pizza. Also included in the drunk pizza category: Never On Sunday and Maria D's. Avoid unless inebriated.

If you come up with any gems, let us know!!!!!!

I couldn't vote because I will eat either.

There are several places where I prefer the canned and others where fresh is the way to go. All mushrooms are yummmmy!

Cook the Book: 'The Heirloom Tomato'

My favorite way to enjoy heirlooms is in tomato sauce.

10 years ago my father took over my grandfathers garden after he passed away so our heirloom crop from Italy would not die out. They are the best tomatoes I have ever tasted. Nothing I make that requires tomatoes ever tastes as good unless I'm using these.

The blight of last summer got to his crop. I am happy to report that this years crop looks good and he even sent me off with my own little plants, which are growing cute, tiny, delicious heirlooms.

I won't be eating those this year though, I am saving the seeds for my own batch of family heirlooms to plant next season. :) I'll still be stealing quarts of tomatoes from him when I go home to visit.
