Not a flavor really, but I'd have to go with an old fashioned hot fudge sundae, two spoons..

Plain old prosciutto? Wrapped around a broiled, cheese-stuffed fig.

I take the good stuff straight, though.

I'd have to go with polenta rosemary olive oil cake for the win, but there's always a place in my heart for Pan di Stelle and a nice espresso.

Serious Eats Goes on a Juice Cleanse: After The Juice

I do a three-week "cleanse*" twice a year in which i abstain from dairy, red meat, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, processed sugar, and try to eat as little processed food and sugar as possible in general. I also try to keep to my regular schedule of exercise, visit the spa/sauna, get a massage, and in general prioritize my well-being. I've also experimented with including meditation and limiting my access to television and internet during this time.

I put the word cleanse in apostrophes because for me it's not about eliminating toxins - it's more (as one of the SE'rs mentioned in a previous column) about pressing the reset button on my habits. It reminds me how good I feel when I treat myself well. And although I'm not about to give up wine and cheese and fatty pork in the long haul, it has helped me to adjust my day-to-day habits to be more healthy, and focus my diet and lifestyle around what actually helps me to feel my best.

I also stopped weighing myself when I started these cleanses (about 2 years ago), so I have no idea if it has helped me to lose weight. But that's also been a key part of focusing on what helps me to feel good, rather than they number on a scale.

So yeah, juice cleanses probably aren't for me, but I do recommend less stringent forms of cleansing!

Exploring the USDA's Food Desert Locator

I think this map has greater use as a broad-brush tool to visualize food deserts in larger geographic areas, as opposed to zooming in on specific communities. As many have noted above, there are often sources of food other than major grocery stores available, and better data would be required to create very detailed maps of food deserts.

That being said, I do think it is a useful tool in illustrating the prevalence of food deserts and establishing patterns at the national or regional level. It can also provide a starting point for more detailed local analysis.

As Toad3000 mentioned, this cost of this map overall was likely quite low (I'm guessing the USDA already owns GIS), and this is exactly the kind of thing I think our government should be spending money on - providing information and tools to the general public and local governments so they can make better decisions about public health, economic and community development.

Lately - oven roasted broccolini, tossed in olive oil and roasted until it crisps up almost like it's friend. A little smoked salt, lemon zest - revelatory.

I guess it's the simplest veggie dishes that tend to stick out in my mind, not the most innovative.

I Eat This Food with Gratefulness - 9/11

I came up out of the subway a few blocks away just after the second plane hit. I was 22 and in my 3rd week of my first job out of college. It has been sunny when I left Brooklyn, but the sky was clouded over with ash and debris when I came up to the street. I vividly remember the juxtaposition of the people panicking on the street, and the thousands of sheets of papers that were floating lazily down from the sky. I tried to turn around and get on the next train home, but they'd stopped running. We were stuck. I was scared and didn't know what to do, so I ended up walking down to Battery Park, near the Staten Island Ferry. No one else seemed to know what to do either, and of course all of the emergency personnel were at the towers. I ended up sitting next to a big man with a little dog. When I told him I'd just moved there, he said "welcome to New York." Then the ground shook when the towers fell and everything (and everyone) was consumed in a thick cloud of dust and ash. It was the most terrifying moment of my life. We ran and ran until we hit the water but there was nowhere to go and it eventually overtook us. Soon after I followed a stream of people to the Brooklyn Bridge. We were covered, caked in thick white dust. It was hard to breathe. I walked back to my apartment in South Slope, people stopping to ask me if I was ok, or how long it had taken me to walk there since they were waiting for loved ones who worked in the towers. When I got home I called my parents.

I have no memory of what I ate that day, but thanks for giving me the chance to remember. I'm going to go sit in the sunshine now and picnic with friends.
