I don't think I've ever smelled worse cheeses than German Handkäse or Austrian Quargel, which are very similar; but they taste wonderful. I had Handkäse with Kümmel (caraway seeds) sprinkled on top -- delicious back in 1986, but I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy it now that my tastes have aged -- I don't even much like lobster any more! Incidentally, Liederkranz, which sounds like a German cheese ("wreath of song") but isn't, used to be made by Borden's and was an authentically American cheese, but it's not made any more. French Époisses is very close to it, however, and is wonderful with a slice of fresh ripe pear.
