just took my lady for a golden state burger (delicious, bun just the right size to eat all of it-i'm talking to you, 25 degrees) and your thoughts on the no waiter service for $15-20 lunches did come to my mind.. the last time i went to GS, (again, delicious) i instinctively added 20% to the credit card slip and had immediate and lasting regret for supporting such a world of mind games. But this time i looked at the tip jar, looked back at the owner, and i know he felt, the " come on dude"......

Sadly, this burger is nowhere near being worthy of the attention or the price tag. This evening's rendition was absolutely insipid. The beef added nothing but bulk to the dish--no satisfying crust, no rich, no seasonings in or on, no aged beef funkiness, and the grind was fine enough to make it resemble baby food in both taste and texture. The bun would really work with a flavorful version of this burger. The dough was worked just a touch longer than a proper scone, which meant that the gluten strands were sufficiently short as to not create a chewy product. This yielded a perfect, but bland mouth feel. One should definitely pass on the rings. The rings were greasy to the touch and greasier in the mouth--"crunchy, oil sponges" comes to mind.

It is no wonder that not a single staff member asked our table how our food was (during and after the meal)--the answer would have been "disappointing." So it goes...I'm sure that other menu items at Tavern, are wonderful (the heirloom tomatoes were very nice), but I would not recommend this burger to any of my friends.

@SinoSoul - Alas, the burger deal at Rustic of which you speak is no more. Labor Day marked its end. The RC burger is back to its $16 dollar ways. Is it worth $16? I've had a chance to sample it a few times and talk burger technique with Chef Evan Funke so I'll have an answer to that question and more in next week's review.

$17 dollars, same price as the DBGB burger. A few miles away Rustic Canyon has $12 burger and beer nights. I can't imagine Tavern's beer (tho I love the food + ambience), being $5 + a pint of beer better than RC's.

Yawn--I was there last night--the burger was bland--no seasoning on the patty and no crust from the griddle. The fries were soggy. On a positive note: the bun was fantastic. Sadly, 12 bucks is lot of dough for a nice bun.

@CHIP P - What a bummer! So sorry the Pasadena LGO didn't measure up to my Santa Monica experience. I've been to SM location 3 times now - burgers each time and have yet to be let down.

Don't be fooled into thinking you're gonna get a good burger at the Pasadena LGO location. Quite the opposite. Based on this review and photo I tried the cheeseburger in Pasadena this weekend. Soggy bun (top and bottom were smooshed down to about 1/4 " each because they were moist and couldn't hold up) and tasteless meat. Inedible taste wise and inedible in trying to eat a burger as you should- with at least 1 hand. What a mess. 1/2 thru trying to eat I gave up, my napkin looked like a 6 month's old bib after 8 courses of Gerber's.
"LGO Hospitality founder Bob Lynn. Lynn spent twenty-five years building the Houston's brand" - interesting. There's a Houston's 1/2 block away from the Pasadena LGO and it's VERY busy while the LGO resto is not at all busy (based on 3 visits and others' observations). There's a good reason for that and it's not the terrific interior.
