nice review. I always tell people 25 degrees is my favorite 'luxe" burger in LA and I think you've proved it. The meat there is fantastic.

Triumph of the New At Rowdy Red Wine & Burger Bar In Los Angeles

I've had the burger here and it's definitely better than the average burger. It's also reasonably priced for the quality you get.

Ditto on parking at the LAPL across the street. If you have a library card (free) then it's $1 parking for one hour, then $4 more dollars for the second hour. Just eat and get out in an hour and you're good to go.

hm, never thought that they would have good burgers at Rush Street. Definitely worth checking out when it's a late hour and I'm hungry in that area.

Langer's is great. I'm going to Katz's at end of the month to see which one is better.

Kogi Taco Truck: The Howard Dean or Barack Obama of Street Food?

I'm actually surprised that more competitors haven't hit the streets. The concept isn't that difficult to copy. However, Kogi has not only first to market, but the brand recognition to carry it pretty far right now. Jonathan Gold is planning a panel with Chef Roy Choi of Kogi amongst others to discuss the question of "What is Authenticity" in cuisine, so it seems that even Mr. Gold himself seems confident that Kogi's influence at least in Los Angeles will be long-lasting.

you just can't go wrong with bacon donuts. the buns on those burgers look way too thick.

the pulled pork sandwiches are great. you should also mention the happy hour specials, which gives you a burger and fries for $3.95 from 3-6, monday through friday.

The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California

great review, and very extensive with nice nice photos. I'll have to try this place if I'm ever out in the Valley (rare). The hours are wretched for working folk though. And I'm with you on the ketchup. Sometimes a vinegary counterpoint helps take in the greasy whole. I don't put ketchup in my burgers usually, but I will if it's just too heavy or could use a slight flavor boost.

Marrow- healthy or unhealthy?

Marrow is a rare thing on menus, especially here in LA, but I recently found a bar nearby my office that serves them. They're a very inexpensive thing to make at home too. Nice parsley salad and crostini's and you've got a treat.

Soda Pop Stop: One-Stop Shopping for 450 Different Sodas

nice catch, I live nearby Galco's and it's the greatest soda shop in the world (in my opinion). I used to go there weekly and fill up on sodas but I realized I was on a high-road to diabetes at that rate. I switched to beer anyways.

One of my favorite sodas at Galco's is the original recipe Dr. Pepper. It's slightly medicinal, easier on the carbonation, but much more intense in flavor than the commercial grade stuff.

From A Hamburger Today

A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California

Save your money, folks. The burger at 25 Degrees is a sad affair. Today, the service was both inattentive and poorly timed. But on to the food. Great rings and tasty fries. The burger meat itself is great--one is keenly aware that it is sirloin, and that is a good thing. Sadly, both burgers were overcooked, and the bun is a disaster. The top of bun was tough and dry enough to make a "thock" sound when tapped with a fingernail. It basically overwhelmed the burger with dry joylessness. The bottom of the bun, also a shamefully overbaked puck of parched, crumbling sadness. The cheese was not melted over the burger, but simply served as an unmelted pile of gunk in the center of the burger, which had so be scraped from the bun and then spread.

The high point is that the waitress must have stuffed two angels down the back of her pants to present such a compelling view. So, the highlights---Good sides, good sights, good sirloin.

Overview: 25 Degrees is a weak suck and can be avoided.

@jbuffalo - thanks so much for the huzzah and bonus points for dropping in the "gallimaufry."

@oneiron - certainly price matters, and this burger is no cheap eat, but I think I'd say it's worth it for a special treat burger. is the "oneiron" a golf reference, if so kudos! Watch out for some golf themed posts in the future.

@mattatouille - thanks! This is indeed a "luxe burger."

@Schimming - I'll have to try Burger Lounge -- La Jolla isn't too far away.

@chrisatdomainerestaurants - glad you enjoyed it. kudos to you all on the good burger. happy to contact you. happy to talk to all our AHT readers!

@awkwardcabbage - Thanks so much. I really appreciate the support. Glad you liked the review! Two snaps up and a twist right back 'atcha!

@dzhughes - you are mucho generous. Thanks, mate!

@shred - Ok. This is a tough one. First off, I love The Golden State and think Jason and James are superstars. They've built a great cafe and I encourage everyone to support it. 25 Degrees is also a seriously good burger. Personally, I find the bacon at TGS distracting, but then again I usually feel bacon is misplaced atop burger. For me, it distracts from the clean beef taste I crave. The TGS burger sans bacon gives me just that. The 25D burger is a more extravagant burger taste. My choice of one over the other might be mostly based on my burger mood.

You finally found a good burger. Next time you go there just ask for half the cheese, just rings, and kill the shake, and I bet it will be 100% perfect!

25 Degrees is still my favorite upscale burger joint, though I frequent Umami more often because it's in my neighborhood.

Damon, which would you rate higher, the burger at 25 Degrees or The Golden State? I appreciate the variety at 25D but can't find a combo I like better than the bacon cheeseburger at TGS.

I'd been pining over whether to spend the coin on 25 Degrees for months and months now. Friends have often raved about it but they're the same friends who rave about lots of high-priced mediocre food so until now I've been in the dark. Thanks for hitting the light switch, man. I think your comment about the shake is mucho hilarious!

I have a burning urge to draw eyes on the photo of the burger with the tongue-like strip of bacon sticking out of it. I also have a burning urge to bite into it. Great mouth-watering photos.

@Adam - YES! on mac and cheese. They make it in the manner that I prefer (sans saucy mess). As for the bacon - I'm with you. I generally don't want/need it on my burgers.

@maxcriden - Thank you, sir!

@megannesta - a number of items on that menu are yummy. I like the pork sandwich too. Hope you enjoy.

@jboylan - thick cut seems to be the rule these days. I say - yes to bacon at breakfast, otherwise, it's a harder sell.

@Nebagakid - As Nick mentioned in his review - the Father's Office burger might not even qualify as one. That said, it is a delicious! sandwich. And I'm with you on Umami.

@Paula Maack - Thank, Paula. Glad you liked the piece and photos. If you swing by Rush Street - tell 'em where you heard about it...AHT!

@mattatouille - Yeah - as is clear from this review, i didn't have such high hopes for this place. They definitely serve a good burger and few places serve food as late in that area.

wow well done!! you did a great job of spanning a pretty large range of locations and types of food. agree on the dodger dogs -- i just don't get the hype, and i'm perfectly happy eating a street vendor hot dog instead. at least they have grilled onions instead of raw!

well done, next time check out brooklyn bagel factory on beverly blvd and just a few blocks down have a chiliburger at tommy's. i suggest having the chili on the side and dipping.

From Serious Eats

As a native socal resident, loved your reviews. We do have serious great eats here, despite some easterners comments to the contrary. My thought about the Dodger Dogs: it is part of the Dodger game experience - I personally would not eat one anywhere but at Dodger Stadium, but NEED one when I'm at a Dodger game. Go figure.

WE LIVED IN L.A. (WOODLAND HILLS) FROM 1975 TIL 1986, HAD SEASON TICKETS FOR DODGERS. WE LOOKED FORWARD TO THE DODGER DOGS WITH A BEER AT EVERY GAME. IT WAS A PART OF IT! NOW WE LIVE IN LITTLE ROCK , HAVE A AAA TEAM AND IT'S NOT THE SAME. NOT EVEN CLOSE! I MUST BE GETTING OLD!

as an LA resident i think this is one of the best LA "casual dining" primers i've ever read. i may not have agreed with all of your takes, but you pretty much covered all the bases for anyone that is coming to LA and wants to know what places to try in order to get a decent cross-section of the cities "eats scene". well done.

There's a wonderful little diner in Van Nuys called Beeps - great burgers, hot dogs, french fries, milkshakes, and terrific breakfasts. It's tiny and not near anything other than the Van Nuys Airport, but it's a great place for a quick meal.

Wow, you really dug into the junk! Great job!!!

I love the Apple Pan, and I had the exact same donuts at Stan's a couple of weeks ago!

Also, Cielito Lindo is my favorite stand at Olivera Street, although I haven't been in YEARS. I love those taquitos, and the squeeze bottles of salsa on the tables. I used to stop there whenever I took the Amtrak "Coaster" train from the gorgeous Union Station across the street down to San Diego (the Coaster is probably the most picturesque way to travel the California coastline - fyi).

Here are some recommendations (along the same lines) for your next trip:

Hotdogs - Let's Be Frank
Donuts - Randy's
Tacos - Tito's Tacos
Pastrami - Johnnie's Pastrami
Empanada's - Tiendo Rincon Chileno
Cuban - Versailles

Enjoy!

Great report. I only lived in LA for a year and missed a lot of the "supposed to visit" places though I did get to Pink's and Stan's. Is Langer's really better than Canter's? I thought Canter's was some of the best deli food I'd eaten. Would be good to know for my occasional, return trips.

From Serious Eats

Fabulous review! This should be mandatory reading for any food lover who visits LA. It's wonderful to see someone who really did their homework before coming to town as opposed to going to the same, tired places. You ate like a native, and as an LA denizen, I pretty much agree with your assessments.

A few notes...the Luck Devil's shake is toasted pecan, not almond, and it is awesome.

The Hollywood Farmers Market is pretty similar to the Santa Monica except Hollywood has more prepared food and a bit more local color; many of the vendors are actually the same; both are great and we do appreciate them.

Dodger Dogs suck. If you're a hot dog lover, next time you're in town, try Skooby's in Hollywood or Carney's, with locations in West Hollywood and Studio City.

Next trip, you've got to hit some Thai food and some of our Korean BBQ.

Thanks for writing.
