Dear AHT: 'Help! I'm Allergic to Beef"
I myself recently found out that i am allergic to hamburger i'm supposing its beef in general as i only eat my burgers well done. however its only the beef that is store purchased and is ground. i can go to McDonald or any fast food restaurant and order a burger and be fine. if i eat home made patties i break out in bumps, itch horrible, and even swell in my hands and face. last week i ate burgers and i done all of the above and even vomited so im still trying to figure out what i can do to eat burgers again as they are my favorite. any one out here have a solution to this problem?

I just had an allergic reaction today with itching, hives and trouble breathing from a buffalo burger at a restaurant. I also have allergic reaction to beef with same symptoms. I've had this happen after eating a steak at a restaurant. That was my worse one, Beef tips and hamburger from restaurant and beef from store. I recently started getting the natural beef(Krogers-Laura something brand) and so far I've not had any allergy symptoms when I had this It says on the package that there are no hormones or antibiotics in it.. I took a benadryl and it makes me tired but I've heard that you can take the non drowsy claritin. I'm also wondering what they are giving to the animals now that is causing this as I never had this happen for years. This started in the last year or two. I think they are loading them with hormones and antibiotics. I've never had a reaction to chicken but I heard they use hormones on them too but it must be too small to cause a reaction. Sorry I have no solution as I miss eating steak esp. when I go out to a restaurant. They do have natural steak in the store and again no allergic reaction. I do not know about the usda labeled beef in stores. I read their info. and can make no sense out of it. Also I did not realize that bison and buffalo are different

Hi I finally found someone with the same reaction to ground beef that I have. I have not always had this allergic reaction but it has been in the last 13 years so it makes me wonder what they are doing to our beef now that they didn't do back then. I don't always have this reaction but when I do it is severe hives. I have wondered if I sometimes get a batch that has some of the cleaning solution in it or if it is foreign beef and they have added someting to it to make it safe for USA. I can never eat at McDonalds because i always have this reaction.

OMG....Since about May of 2008 I also have an allergy to beef/pork. At first I had no clue to what my allergy was with. I would get hives...swell up...and itch like crazy. The itching would stop if I layed down in the tub filled with warm water. I cant even eat bacon or ham....its been chicken and turkey for over a year now. Worst thing is I am sort of over paranoid about this...the itching is pure hell. I found out its not just eating...but if steamed and I am over it while being steaming...I get the reaction but not as intense. Thank god or whatever higher being you belive in that I can still drink MILK. Thank you everyone for your comments...I at least know others are in the same boat...maybe there is hope.

For about a year I would break out in cat o' nine tails of welts--hives--when I ate dairy. I abstained for a year, slowly introduced it, (I don't think it's good to take antihistamines regularly) and now can have it without problems. 'Drying out' seemed to help. I never told anyone in real life because I thought they would say I was crazy.
If you're having that severe a reaction, you should get it checked out--it's unusual you only get it from meat, since you probably eat beef in tiny doses, in broth and such, without realizing it--in marinates, even ground up in processed chicken products. You may only be allergic to a certain protein or your allergy may be more diffuse. Either way, simply avoiding burgers and steaks, if you have a really, really severe allergy won't necessarily protect you.

I too am allergic to beef. During the last year, I've had to add pork to the list as well. I used to eat hot dogs, but that's over as of last night due to a trip to the ER with anaphalaxis. Very scary......I don't know what the cause is, no one can tell me. I developed this in my mid-twenties and it has progressively gotten worse. I can no longer eat Arby's roast beef, McDonalds, Wendy's--you name it, it nails me. Just FYI though, don't mess around with anaphylactic reactions. Get to the ER quickly; you can die from this. Your blood pressure may dump so low that your body cannot recover on it's own. The only solution I have found is to avoid the offending food. It's chicken, fish or turkey. Yuk. Anyway, it would be interesting to find out what the exact culprit is. Good luck everyone.
