Serious Eats Neighborhood Guides: Robyn's Greenwood Heights (ish)

Milan's! Awesome Slovakian food served by the super-nice owner. 5th and 21st, I think.

how to make someone like Cabbage.

I know you said they already sort of like red cabbage, but this is the recipe I use for red-cabbage skeptics: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/tassajara-warm-red-cabbage-salad-recipe.html

Made it for Christmas one year, my uncle prefaced the meal by saying he didn't like cabbage, ended the meal saying he wanted to marry cabbage.

Also, texture can be an issue - if they already like coleslaw, make sure whatever cabbage you try serving is sliced thin or shredded (works for brussels sprouts too).

Best Baklava in Astoria

Bay Ridge also has some great options for baklava (and I'm partial to the pistachio kind, too). The one that stands out in my memory is from Nablus Sweets on 5th Ave and 68th Street.

Dear Slice: 'Visiting NYC Again; Where Should I Go for Pizza This Time?'

L&B Spumoni and Zero Otto Nove - both are far, far from Manhattan, so understandable if you can't hit them on a short visit. But L&B is just fun, in addition to the killer square slice. And Zero Otto Nove's butternut & sausage pie kind of knocked my socks off when I tried it a while back.

What's the Worst Burn You've Endured While Cooking?

Seconding the boiling liquid + sock comment - a few weeks ago I splashed some boiling chicken stock onto myself. Didn't think it hurt much on my arm, then realized my sock was holding it onto my foot and foot hurt like hell. Giant blister and scar on the top of my foot, but at least the soup was tasty.

Off the Beaten Path: Taking One for the Team at LQQM Kung Fu Bing in Chinatown

I felt exactly the way you did, and I only ate a plain pancake with no filling. I feel like I can take some MSG, but that pancake took me entirely out of commission. Totally not worth it.

@chaevans I don't think that's true, this place just isn't that great.

What's Your Go-To Neighborhood Diner?

George's in Ditmas Park (Coney Island Ave @ Cortelyou) - the food is nothing special, but it's seriously old-school.

Anapoli in Bay Ridge (3rd Ave @ 69th) - the food IS something special, especially the gyro omelet. And they serve iced coffee in old soda shop coke glasses.

It's-It Ice Cream Sandwiches at the Google Cafeteria

They're listed as bar snacks at Pacific Standard in Park Slope (a bar that embraces all things California). I've never seen anyone order them though, so I can't verify that they actually keep them in stock. It's worth a try, though.

Flor de Piaxtla in Sunset Park for breakfast chilaquiles and tacos al pastor. And a constant stream of Mexican soap operas on their TV. (Super Taste is a close second).

Openings: Four-Foot-Long Pizza at Farinella

My office tried Farinella for lunch last week - we were all pretty satisfied. The crust is thicker than the (similar) slices at Grandaisy, but is pleasantly chewy and crispy in the right places, and the toppings were well chosen. We're lucky enough to be located near both this place and the new Grandaisy.

The Best Gelato in New York Is Being Served in a Tanning Salon

They sell a few of his gelatos at Lia's Ices in Windsor Terrace. I've had the cherry and fig, and they're amazing. Can't wait to try the cassata
