I felt exactly the way you did, and I only ate a plain pancake with no filling. I feel like I can take some MSG, but that pancake took me entirely out of commission. Totally not worth it.

@chaevans I don't think that's true, this place just isn't that great.

What's Your Go-To Neighborhood Diner?

George's in Ditmas Park (Coney Island Ave @ Cortelyou) - the food is nothing special, but it's seriously old-school.

Anapoli in Bay Ridge (3rd Ave @ 69th) - the food IS something special, especially the gyro omelet. And they serve iced coffee in old soda shop coke glasses.

They're listed as bar snacks at Pacific Standard in Park Slope (a bar that embraces all things California). I've never seen anyone order them though, so I can't verify that they actually keep them in stock. It's worth a try, though.

Flor de Piaxtla in Sunset Park for breakfast chilaquiles and tacos al pastor. And a constant stream of Mexican soap operas on their TV. (Super Taste is a close second).

Openings: Four-Foot-Long Pizza at Farinella

My office tried Farinella for lunch last week - we were all pretty satisfied. The crust is thicker than the (similar) slices at Grandaisy, but is pleasantly chewy and crispy in the right places, and the toppings were well chosen. We're lucky enough to be located near both this place and the new Grandaisy.

They sell a few of his gelatos at Lia's Ices in Windsor Terrace. I've had the cherry and fig, and they're amazing. Can't wait to try the cassata

The Boyfriend went up to take a pic with the panda, but I wouldn't touch anything with a cheesy mascot and unabashedly try to be the next KFC. I'm glad you are brave enough to try so I don't have to. For that I thank you.

What a mess and not in a good way, it looks like it would taste as the majority who unfortunately took a bite of it. What did they do to get the taste and grease out of their mouth and mind?
Who was it that said there's a SUCKER born every minute! sick joke.
My liver hurts looking at all that grease and the MSG headache must be a whopper!

Ming Tsai and his Mom made bings one day on his PBS show and they looked awesome. Ming made cheeseburgers with the works and totally encased them in bing dough. Yummy!

What's Your Go-To Neighborhood Diner?

We often go to Comfort Diner (45th between 2nd & 3rd) on lazy weekends and their eggs and pancakes are great.

I tried it last night. I liked it and ate the whole thing. Sure the freshly made roti pancake is greasy, but isn't it supposed to be for it to be delicious? I got the beef and egg. I think the egg helped. Thinking what would happen if I put a really good burger patty or some roast pork in there :)

Well anyway, thanks for writing about it. I'm glad I tried it.

Went there a few weeks ago and it was pretty disappointing. I think I was expecting something more than meh-tastic sandwiches.

@djai695: I'll have to try it again now. I had it a couple times early on and thought it was good but not blow-you-away good.

I have to say Farinella is getting better and better as each week goes by. The owner is introducing new things to the menu daily. Fresh gnocchi alla sorrentina, rice balls, potato croquettes, and my personal favorite the napoli calzone with escarole and black olives. The place gets packed for lunch. I'd rather pay for Farinella's escarole calzone any day than to pay $5 for a DiFarra slice. I was skeptical at first, but I see excellent progress thus far, and I see an owner who is dedicated in offering people different options with his daily specials.

The Best Gelato in New York Is Being Served in a Tanning Salon

There is a fabulous confection boutique on Park Ave btwn 58th and 59th that serves up the best gelato I've ever had. The brand is called Taste Gelato Artigianale, made fresh daily with all natural ingredients. There is a debut for the gelato on June 4th and 5th. I highly recommend it!!!!

Farinella has potential. The area has a mix of Government workers, law school students, and Citigroup workers. Slices are steep in price, and a little rubbery. While the slices look absolutely genuine in Roman style, they sometimes seem like they have been laying there. The sandwiches are served on bread that really cuts the roof of your mouth. The products are great, but they use very little buffalo mozzarella on their "buffala" slice. All in all, when it's said and done, can they survive in the Government/Financial district. I feel like if this place was in the Village would bloom better than it has in recent weeks. Broadway/Worth is a ghost town on the weekends. The staff is attentive and polite, i think most people aren't used to Roman style pie, especially in that neighborhood.

Every time I've been to Pacific Standard and asked about the It's-It, the only flavor they have is mint. It's fine, although often a little smushed. I don't know if it's because other flavors sell faster, or if the mint ones are cheaper, but I'm always disappointed since mint ice cream is not one of my favorites.
