Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Russ & Daughters Brunch Package

Mexican Eggs: a delicious mashup of scrambled eggs, bell peppers, tortilla strips, cheese and salsa. (It's the tortilla strips that really make it sing.)

Mail-Order Ice Cream from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in Columbus, Ohio

Hey, Ryan, do you have any outlets in Chicago? I swooned over Jeni's on my trip to Columbus last December and ordered six pints to serve to guests on New Year's Eve, making you several new converts in the process. Thanks!

Trying to Re-create Dishes from Restaurant Cookbooks, Including Shopsin's 'Slutty Cakes'

The Brown Rice Special (p. 101) doesn't sound like much on paper, but is a seriously, crazily addictive salad (or, as Kenny says, "a f***ing terrific salad"). I must've made it a dozen times since I got this book and I've sworn to have Kenny's version next time I'm in NYC. The Cream of Garlic Soup (p. 135) is really, really good, esp. if you are in Chicago and can make it with pretzel bread. And we had the Sausage & Walnut Stuffing (p. 190) for Thanksgiving, to great acclaim (Jimmy Dean sage sausage is the key). Slutty cakes are next on my list to try!

Cook the Book: Taco-Fried Chicken

@ccbweb: Have you ever seen Kenny Shopsin?

I'm having a great time reading this book--Kenny's voice is hilariously intact in the prose. The two recipes I've tried this week (Brown Rice Special & Creamy Garlic Soup) have been winners, too.

Shopsin's: Comical Rudeness

I read Trillin's New Yorker piece a few years back, saw the documentary, and decided I couldn't leave NYC on my last trip till I'd eaten at Shopsin's. I was nervous as hell but went at a slow midday time, had the sweet younger daughter as my waitress, and made up my mind quickly. The spicy chicken soup helped clear out my head cold and Kenny paid no attention to me, but I did get to see him deliver a profanity-laden harangue when a group of guys came in and asked for a table for five. I also got to see him have a solicitous, engaged conversation with a guy in his 20s who was clearly an old friend of Kenny's kids. The guy is about 275 pounds of pure id. I couldn't live or work with him, that's for sure, but I like knowing that he's there in his little corner of the market doing his thing.

Tarte d'Alsace. Ham, Gruyere, caramelized onions and creme fraiche on a shatteringly crisp crust. *Unbelievably* addictive!
