If you've ever worked at a chain restaurant/ fast food place...

My first job was at McD's in 95'. I would make pie a la mode, with an apple pie, soft serve, and caramel. I used to be offered on the menu, but is no longer that I know of. Of course, we always cooked our own stuff fresh. I would also put cheese and bacon on my McChickens.

I quit there, and went to Tim Horton's. At the beginning of each shift, I would put an XL french vanilla cappucino in the fridge and drink it over ice after shift. That was long before they came out with ice caps and iced coffees. I would also take their ham and cheese biscuts, slice it open, and run it through the bagel toaster, top it with cheddar and tuna salad. MMMM, so tasty.

No wedding cake -- a new trend???

It was $400 cheaper for me to buy 22lb of Callebaut chocolate and a fountain for our wedding than a cake. And all our guests raved about the chocolate fountain. As soon as you mention wedding to a vendor, the price triples.

Suggestions for drive-in food

This isn't a food related comment, but a personal experience comment. There is a drive in open in the summer near my parents place. Once a week, the Lions Club holds drive in bingo. My sister and I went and we had so much fun!! We took my mom's cookie sheets to put our bingo cards, and when you win bingo, you honk your horn! We had a lot of laughs that night. It's an opportunity to pair up with your local Lions or Kinsmen etc., and have your drive in open when it would otherwise be closed, as it is held during daylight hours.
Whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck. Drive Ins are great, and it's a shame they are few and far between.

Canadians who grocery shop in the States

I made my first trip to the US this past November. Some of the grocery items I brought back were Cherry Coke, Pepsi Throwback, Salted Nut Rolls, Chex, Swiss Miss, and Carolina BBQ Lays chips. We had a great time wandering the grocery store and comparing prices. Things are so much cheaper in the US.

Unique Hometown Foods

I was raised in an Acadian community of Nova Scotia. The Acadian dish of the area was called rapure (pronounced rah-peer) or rappie pie. Essentially, it is grated raw potato with all moisture drained out that has been reconsituted with broth, salt, pepper, fat and onion added, layered with meat in a baking dish and baked till golden brown. Most commonly, they are made with chicken, but can also be found to have beef, pork, clams, or rabbit.

Movie theater food: what's your favorite and are you a smuggler?

My hubby and I are avid movie goers. We occasionally smuggle in some Glossette almonds. I always have a popcorn with the Becel margarine and dill pickle seasoning. I don't know what's up with the Lactancia butter they have at Cineplex, but it tastes like shoe stink.

I buy the Cineplex gift certificates at Costco for $23.55 (Canadian). That gets us two adult admissions, two regular soft drinks and a regular popcorn. It's a heck of a deal considering admission for one adult at the door is $12.

Serious Heat: Sriracha Hot Wings

I make a honey hot sauce with 1/2 cup liquid honey, 1/4 cup Loisiana Wing Sauce, a bit of butter, and a minced garlic clove. Heat to boiling in a saucepan. Pour over cooked wings and toss to coat. Sometimes, I sub the honey for thick teriyaki sauce. Both are delish!

I either bake my salt and pepper seasoned wings on a rack on a cookie sheet, or deep fry them.

I have a Cutco carving set that I received from my old employer as an award. It's nice, but I don't use it that often.

What do you miss? (to: expats and others!)

@Peony, we BBQ'd striploins at our rehersal for our wedding too! We got married back in NS and took 80 steaks back with us for the dinner. We also got many comments on the flavor of the beef and how much better it was.
Every time I go home, I have to take some for my parents. Which is OK, because they get me lots of seafood to bring back with me. So it's a fair trade I think!

What do you miss? (to: expats and others!)

Being the grand-daughter of a fisherman, being born and raised by the ocean in Nova Scotia and now living on the bald prairie in cowboy country of Alberta, I miss fresh seafood!!!! The stuff I have found in stores and restaurants is individually quick frozen, previously frozen, or just plain rotten. I have found an odd place or two in the city where you can get decent seafood, but at a super premium price. I just can't bring myself to pay $28 a pound for 100-110 count scallops.
Garlic fingers and donairs. Garlic fingers are non exsistant here, donairs you can find the occasional place but they aren't always good.
Farmers brand chocolate milk.
Grapenut ice cream
Baccala for fish cakes
Fried Clams..the real deal not those fake clam strips
Rapure or Rappie pie...strictly an Acadian dish from the southern part of Nova Scotia. I don't expect to find that anywhere but home. Just one more thing that makes it home for me.

I will say one good thing about cowboy country. They can rustle up a mean slab of beef that tastes better than anything I have ever had. I never craved a good steak till I moved here.

Where to dine in Montreal

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! We had a great time in Montreal. On the first day, we had brunch at Cora's which was just OK. The breakfast the people next to us had looked divine. I think we just didn't make the right choices there.
Then we had supper at Reuben's on Ste. Catherine. We shared wings, a smoked meat sandwich and poutine, all of which were delicious.
On Saturday, we discovered Au Pain Dore and picked up some croissants, salads and pastries. They were tasty too. I was hoping to get back there but didn't have time. We also ate at Firegrill on Stanley before heading to the Bell Center. I had New York strip and my husband had ribs. My steak was perfectly cooked and tender. We very much enjoyed our meal there.
On Sunday, we toured Old Montreal and headed for the airport. The airport was a zoo so I am glad we got there very early.
I really wanted to get to Schwartz's and Santropol, but with our schedule packed and our sleeping schedule was out of whack, we didn't make it far out of downtown.
So I see a return visit in our future and I hope to experience more wonderful places in Montreal.

Thanks Again!

Where to dine in Montreal

Thank you all for your input! We are on a somewhat limited budget as I booked this trip before my husband lost his job. So unfortunately, $120 meals will be out this time, but definately will keep it in mind next time.

We are staying downtown close to the Bell Center as the reason for the trip is we are attending UFC 97. It is my Valentine's gift to my hubby. We have no car and are relying on public transit. My hubby is pretty picky, filet is about as adventurous as he gets.

I'd like to check out places that the locals eat at. Not just the touristy places. Good breakfast places welcome too!

Thanks for the links. They offer good info I hadn't already found.

Thanks again for all your advice. It is very appreciated!!

Food "gifts." Is this tacky?

If you have an Ikea near you, I got a cheap vinegar bottle there a couple years ago. I am not sure if they still carry the same one or not.
I know they carry the bottles with the stopper attached with wire that snaps closed.
I would be happy just to get some homemade vinegar, it wouldn't matter to me if it was in a mason jar etc. I could always put it in my own vinegar jar at home. But if you are making it more of a gift, you could still use a mason jar or something similar. Cover the top with a scrap of fabric and tie a piece of raffia or twine around it ito hold it on with a little tag that says "dbcurrie's kickin' vinegar" or whatever. That would make it more gift-like.

Cook the Book: 'Ten'

I grew up on the East Coast and now I live in Alberta. I was seriously craving some homecooking. So I flew home for a long weekend. I walked to the beach with my grandma (who is in her 70's) and we dug and shucked our own clams. We had a big clam, scallop and fish cake fry when we got home!
I learned everything I know about cooking from my grandmothers, and maybe just a little bit from Iron Chef! :-)

Grocery Shopping?

At the local store I frequent, I will not pick Susan's checkout because she is rude and annoying. Nor will I pick the arrogant young punk whose name I do not know that is just there for a paycheque and does not care how he packs the groceries. Sanela, my favorite cashier, now works at McDonald's.

Perhaps I frequent the grocery store too much?
