What's Your Favorite Halloween Candy?
Take 5 is my new crack. Move over Twix, Kit Kat, Heath, Mr. Goodbar, Payday, and Reese's.
If only they'd bring back the crunchy cookie Reese's cup.
Cook the Book: 'The Sweeter Side of Amy's Bread'
Snickerdoodles...I love rolling the dough in cinnamon sugar.
Snapshots from Asia: Why Are Italian Noodles So Much Pricier than Chinese Ones?
The King Won Ton noodles have a great texture but they are pretty inconsistent according to picky family and friends. I went a few weeks ago and the bamboo thwacked noodles had too much of an alkali/soapy taste.

Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
Fried fish skins are excellent - I had some excellent, thin and crispy versions served alongside wonton noodle soup in Hong Kong last week.

Okay now that Fall is around the corner....
I misread the title as "Okay now that FAIL is around the corner" and was expecting a different kind of thread. XD
Apples, apple cider, all sorts of soups and stews, braised dishes, pumpkin pie...mmm.
Happy Birthday, Instant Ramen
Whoa...I had this random craving for instant ramen last night and I haven't had that craving since freshman year in college. O_o It's a sign!!!
I used to love ramen with half packet of seasoning and octopus-cut hot dogs. My mom would stir fry the ramen with leftover veggies and meat.
Where Should I Eat/Shop in San Francisco?
^ misseditor, where did you go in the Sunset? I'm assuming you ate somewhere in the Inner Sunset/9th and Irving area.
My favorite cold cereal is _____
Life, Kashi Heart to Heart, Cracklin' Oat Bran, Quaker Oatmeal Squares or Barbara's version of oatmeal squares.
Used to love Honey Bunches of Oats...and anything with clusters.
Where Should I Eat/Shop in San Francisco?
I agree with LizNYC. Layers are your friend in July and August. It's been in the low to mid-60s during the day and 50s in the evening in my part of SF. Napa will be nice and warm though.
If you have time, wander around the Mission and check out Bi-Rite (Market and Creamery) as well as the plethora of taquerias and cool restaurants in the area. My favorite taco in the Mission is the al pastor at Taqueria San Jose at 24th and Mission. La Taqueria's tacos are pricier but pretty big. Tartine's morning buns are like craaaaaack.
Will you have a car? In addition to the Ferry Building, check out the Alemany Farmer's Market on Saturday where they have more Asian produce and other ethnic goodies at everyday prices. The La Estrellita ladies are very sweet and make fresh pupusas on the spot. All-Star Tamales hits the spot. Also, the alfajores stand has excellent alfajores as well. Regular folk come here for groceries at very reasonable prices.
If you feel like comparing Chinese egg custard tarts (dan taat), a lot of people like Golden Gate Bakery on Grand in Chinatown though I think they've either changed owners or something recently.
Skippy or Jif? (Thanks Bessfour!)
As with others, I've switched to natural PBs and nut butters. I hated the natural ones growing up since I didn't like that oil slick on top. I ate Jif, Peter Pan, and Skippy growing up - whatever was on sale. I enjoyed both creamy and crunchy versions...but we mainly had creamy for my grandparents.
If it weren't for the food thieves at work, I'd keep my natural nut butters in the fridge. I still have a jar of Skippy in my locked flipper cabinet when I can't make it out to lunch or need a snack.
fresh corn...to freeze or not to freeze?
dakotarose...that angel food pan idea is geeeeeenious! You catch all the kernels too.
I'm blown away by the simplicity and slickness.
Tastespotting - what happened?
=(
Tastespotting really got me through the day! It introduced me to a plethora of awesome food blogs from around the globe.
Ballpark Food: Home Runs and Strike Outs
I agree with Alaina - the garlic fries at AT&T Park in SF rocks but it depends if you get a fresh batch and how fast you eat them. I noticed that the club level garlic fries are generally crispier than most fries served at the park. Also, some of the better restaurant/stands are on that level but alas, it's only open to club level and luxury box ticket holders. :(
How To Cook Perfect Hard-Boiled Eggs
My method is similar to srhcb's above. I let my eggs sit covered in the hot water for 17 minutes (sometimes to 18, if the eggs are a bit larger/rounder). After cooking, I immediately transfer the eggs to a large bowl of cold water for easier peeling.
My coworker swears by that Julia Child's method as well. I may have to try that some time.
A Guide to Bakeries in Manhattan's Chinatown
@ fuuchan - I don't know why Mexican buns are called that but they DO look a lot like the buns I find at panaderias. Pan dulce?
Photo of the Day: Horlicks Doggie Cookies
A lot of them look Snoopy-ish!
Cook the Book: 'Panini Express'
A recent fave:
Roast chicken with tomato jam, caramelized onions, goat cheese and arugula.
Photo of the Day: Bahn Mi Closeup
Easily one of my all time favorite sandwiches too!
See's Chocolates: Have You See-n the Light?
I LOVE See's too and I work in the same city as one of their factories and one of the discount stores. I like how they give free chocolate pieces to enjoy while in their stores.
Trader Joe's Torture: What one thing do you have to buy?
One thing?! Ouch...I LOVE me some TJ's.
I like their organic lowfat cottage cheese, organic spring mix for $1.99, and organic unsalted tortilla chips. The prices for their ground turkey is pretty great too.
I don't know about the rest of the US but In the SF Bay Area, their store brand cream-top yogurt (made by Strauss) is my latest addiction.
Non-food wise, I like their miniature orchids for $7.99.
How To Cook Perfect Hard-Boiled Eggs
Faster version of oven hard boiled eggs in 30 minutes for mass hard boiled eggs. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Eggs come in either cardboard or styrofoam containers. DO NOT USE STYROFOAM CONTAINER IN THE OVEN BECAUSE IT WILL MELT! Once oven is preheated cut off cardboard top of egg container and place container with eggs on rack. Additionally place a metal or ceramic cup of water on the rack, NOT ON THE EGGS. Bake for 30 minutes @ 350 and presto you have hard boiled eggs. I have done 4 dozen at a time with one cup of water for 30 mins and get the same results. May substitute muffin pan or cookie sheet if you don't have the cardboard container. Great for prepping eggs for Easter or other recipes which require many hard boiled eggs without cracking or splitting, Try it you'll like it.
What's Your Favorite Halloween Candy?
Hershey pumpkin spice candy kisses. This was their first year out and they were hard to find.
A Guide to Bakeries in Manhattan's Chinatown
I was surprised to see Lung Moon wasn't on your list. They are my last stop before taking the subway back to Brooklyn. Their cram rolls are amazing. Baked baos are out of this world as well as red bean cakes. The only thing I've ever found lacking was their coconut buns which I would usually grab from a place on the corner of Baxter and Canal.
Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
I like chicken but "chicken skins" in a bag sounds gross. I'll just stick to my favorite

@avisualperson: Yes, the chicken wing is honest-to-God real. Hm, "over ceviche". I'd try it, but it's kind of a hard sell.
Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
oh and to add to the eating experience (and probably deter you); there are dry pieces and "wet" pieces . . . . the wet being pieces which were particularly juicy with grease. ugh. would be good crushed on top of a casserole or . . . . fried up into some rice . . . . . or strewn over ceviche.
Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
yeah these are kinda good. pretty salty, smells a little skank; they only had the 2oz. size at the bodega I got them in so . . . no whole chicken wing. seriously, is that real? did you really find a whole chicken wing in there?
I got them at a bodega in the South Bronx, corner of East 138th Street and Brown Place.
Yum.
Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
I,like you love a good turkey or chicken skin.I have long thought of having such an item at a food stand or bbq place.I to thought that i was the only one that wanted this sort of thing but now through the magic of tv you see other countries that eat it every day.Not that i am saying it is good for you but it is tasty and it has many possibilities in the food world.
Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
I'd try these.
And fish skin is delicious if done right - find a trustworthy Japanese restaurant and order a salmon skin seaweed salad. Mmm...

Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
Howard's is located in Hamden, CT. The company is called International Provisions, and their site is....(wait for it)......http://www.friedporkskins.com.
You might be able to buy directly from them, not sure. I do see the bags of pork skins all over the place here in the New Haven area, but never have seen the chicken....
Howard's Crispy Fried Chicken Skins, Because Pork Rinds Are So Last Year
my brother refers to crispy fish skin as "salmon bacon", yum. others find it too fishy.
our grandmothers used to make gribenes, mother did too. i remember her cutting up the skins with scissors, and anxiously waiting for the crispy results to come out of the schmaltz. my husband thought i was trying to kill him with them when i had a bout of nostalgia and made them a few years ago. it's all about the hot and crispy--hard to believe the ones in a bag would be as good.

Classic chocolate chip cookies. We use the tollhouse recipes, but we use crisco instead of butter, makes super crispy cookies.. it's pretty much the only transfat I allow myself.. they just don't taste the same any other way!
