Video: The American 'Ethnic' Food Section at a German Grocery Store

HA ! So funny ! I live in the Netherlands and they have the same shelves here. And only Jim Beam BBQ sauces - no other brands. Same fluff too. They also have skippy PB here, root beer cans, helmann's mayonaisse, and butter flavoured micorwave popcorn. What a weird selection !!

Feeding a hungry guy (almost like a hippo)

Ah ! Great discussion. My husband is big & tall and does bodybuilding regularly. He needs not only a lot more calories but also a lot of protein too. But with a bit of planning it can work for both of you. This is what we do: if we have a simple vegetarian meal or large salad for dinner, he also gets 2 roasted fish fillets (straight from the freezer frozen bonless tilapia or salmon, in the oven for 25 min. with some seasoning and olive oil added). Or he also gets a sauteed chicken breast or 2. If we are eating a dinner that has meat or fish in it already, he jut gets a double portion. We had turkey burgers this weekend, I had 1, he had 2. Having dessert also helps. Oh and he adds bacon to a lot of meals. Hope this helps !

Video: 'The Delicious Miss Dahl' on BBC2 with Sophie Dahl

I caught a bit of her show the other week (we get BBC2 in Holland) and I watch even bad cooking shows, but I did find her iritating. Something about her is just not very genuine or convincing. Like she is pretending to like cooking homey foods and eating them. Like she thinks this is what is cool now, so she better do it. I just don't buy it. But Great British Menu which is back on BBC 2 this year is something I regularly DVR so I can watch after work. Definitely the best BBC cooking show.

Sardines for Breakfast Anyone?

My husband is from Sierra Leone, West Africa and there they eat sardines for breakfast, in an omlette, but mixed in with the eggs, not as a filling in the middle. They also add chopped onion and eat the omlette in a bread bun. It smells fishy but it's not bad.

What's the stupidest thing you ever ordered at a restaurant?

Can't believe I can't remember any of my own mistakes, but the most vivid memory is of me and my friend on a holiday in Tunisia. Did a 3-day trip through the desert spending nights in isolated hotels in little oasis. Trip was amazing but we were tired and hungry a lot. My friend was very unreasonble. Would always order the most exotic thing on the menu (dinner was included in price of trip). One particular night we were famished. She ordered the calamari in tomato sauce ! In the middle of the desert !!! I ordered the 2 egg omlette and toast. 1 egg omlette really when I had to share it with her.

How to Cook Dried Beans

I always soaked beans overnight, until recently when I soaked some dutch brown beans overnight and then forgot to cook them in the morning. So after soaking for about 24 hours they cooked in about 45 minutes. I was kinda stunned at that speed. I repeated the same 24 hour soak for some black eyed peas last weekend and they cooked in about an hour. They usually take me 2 hours or more, so I am delighted with my new discovery. I usually salt them towards the end of cooking.

Cook the Book: 'How to Roast a Lamb'

Aaah, lamb.... My favorite dish is from where I'm from, Macedonia, although I think most of the Balkan countries make it, and Turkey possibly too. It's called Elbasan Tava, (tava meaning pan), and it is roast leg of lamb, with a surrounding of a plain yogurt and egg mixture added toward the end of roasting. The eggy mixture bakes in the lamb juices and it is simply divine. I can't wait til spring when I can go home to eat some. And then eat some more.
