Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
Hostess fruit pies, I loved them as a kid but they are so foul.
Ramps. HTF?
I used most of mine instead of green onions in my Thai vegetable curries. The sharp garlic onion flavor was really stood out in the curry.
Then I had some really good eggs so I made buckwheat crepes with eggs, bacon and ramps.
Dinner Tonight: Curried Sautéed Cauliflower
How strange, I just posted a roasted coconut curry cauliflower recipe today and then was reading my email feed of Serious Eats and saw curried cauliflower and roasted cauliflower! I have to try the Martha recipe with capers now.

Lay out your cookie tray for me, see if we need to trade recipes
My cookie tray list:
chewy molasses,
Russian tea balls,
basic chocolate chip,
oatmeal chocolate chip,
lemon frosted crisp gingerbread,
snickerdoodles,
homemade caramels and pecan brittle,
and this years new addition is Sugar Shuttles from Gourmet
After looking at the list, I think I need to add something with fruit so maybe a thumbprint cookie as well.

The first time I tasted ____ it was so vile I spit it out
Pickled herring. I just wasn't prepared. My then boyfriend (now husband) INSISTED I have a piece for good luck on New Year's Eve, it's some German thing. I'm sure I had a little to drink and it was after midnight. I can take it now but that first year I thought I was going to throw up all over his parents.
College Dining Halls Go Upscale to Lure Students
I chose my second year dorm based on the food. Alas it went to waste because I didn't factor in the awesome Korean restaurant right across the street. It's siren song caused me to spend money I didn't have and forget about the dorm meals I had already paid for.
Crumble
Rhubarb is a favorite but the best has to be sour cherries.
What do you eat when you're feeling under the weather?
Carbs. Bowls of rice or noodles with butter and toast.
I'm also a sucker for Jello-pop. Add Jello powder to 1 cup of hot water, it has to be red (cherry or raspberry). After it dissolves pour it over ice. My mother always made this for me and it really is awesome on a sore throat.
Whip cream substitute?
For that recipe, I would use a tablespoon of whatever substitute for butter you normally use and then thin it with more pasta water.
I cook mostly dairy-free (my son is allergic) and I've found this substitution works well every time I've tried it:
1 C heavy cream = ¾ C milk (I use full fat soy) + 1/3 C butter (I use Earth Balance Margarine)
This will not whip, but for other applications it adds the right amount of fat to create a heavy cream ratio in soymilk. I've used it in ganaches, candy making and sauces.
Corn syrup-is it really that bad? Replacements?
I use Wholesome Sweeteners brand corn syrup after I noticed the addition of HFCS to the Karo brand.
You can find it in some Whole Foods and produce markets and online. I personally try to avoid both HFCS and regular corn syrup on a regular basis but sometimes you just have to make homemade caramels!
Corn syrup-is it really that bad? Replacements?
I have used rice syrup for pecan pie, and it's the best pie ever. but not sure what to use to make marshmallows.
Dinner Tonight: Curried Sautéed Cauliflower
This curried cauliflower was fantastic! I used slightly more than tbsp of store-bought Jamaican Hot Curry powder, and it was just the right amount of spice. I placed the lid on it to help it steam, as mentioned above, but not before getting a nice little char on the veggies. Plus, I made it last night just to have it for lunch, so the "leftovers" were kick-a**. Thanks for the recipe!
Dinner Tonight: Curried Sautéed Cauliflower
This was delicious. Seemed like it would be too dry to cook with such a small amount of oil, but it ended up browning perfectly and the onions almost carmelized. I put a lid on at the end to steam it just a bit, so the cauliflower would be cooked a little more. Can't wait for the leftovers!

@KTempesta - I'll have to look up that chai shortbread recipe just in case my test batch of snickerdoodles don't go over well
@sadiepix - your "international" cookie tray sounds divine! Your family and friends are soooo lucky.
@lamora - yes, please post your multi-purpose cream cheese almond dough!
So many good ideas, so little time and energy!

I have a cream cheese almond cookie dough which is my Go-To recipe every year. It makes a huge amount of dough from simple ingredients and whatever comes out is wherever your imagination takes you. I have from this one recipe made cutout cookies, logs which I dip in chocolate and nuts, bon bon cookies which I dip into melted white choc and Christmas sprinkles, or roll it out and make jam slices. Also, you can add chocolate to part of the dough and make any type of chocolate cookie. I usually have 3 or 4 different variations on my cookie trays. If anyone would like the recipe, let me know. I will be glad to post it.

How did I miss this thread? Phooey!
Those Chai snickerdoodles sound good. I have had the Chai shortbread and it was pretty good, but I have not tried making any.
I always make too much. Hard to help myself! Plus everyone wants a favorite...and I am bad at saying no...
Moravian spice cookies
Chewy ginger cookies
Mexican wedding cakes
Kourabedes
Espresso-almond sticks
Baklava
Mammoul
Date swirls
Fig pinwheels
Mission fig bars
Marzipan-filled bars
Raspberry bars
Plain and dark chocolate-dipped, shortbread
Lebkuchen
Lemon raspberry shortbread sandwiches
Peppermint surprise cookies
Chocolate covered cherry cookies
Mixed dried fruit and nut bars
Hopefully that is all, though most this year are single batches so it won't be bad.
I am already making some of the simpler doughs and freezing them in advance. Saves time and space in my tiny kitchen.
@Texas--those potato chip cookies sound fun! I may have to make some, they sound good!
Good thread!

@maggiehc~Those sound yummy.Chewy molasses Russian teaballs? explain please. And your lemon frosted gingerbread sounds good.
How hard is it to make caramels? I notice alot of you doing it and I never have. And marshmallows. My boyfriend Alton likes homemade marshmallows.
And why isn't anyone else asking for recipes? This was supposed to be for all of us.

I would like to know more about the Russian tea balls.
@texas & dearrie--my t-totaling grandmother, who's already pretty crazy to begin with, enjoyed a few too many rum balls at a Christmas party last year and got quite tipsy, from what I heard. Wish I could've been there to see it.

I still love Fig Newtons, too but will enjoy any Fig Newton 'knockoff". I did like popscicles but today find them too sweet and lacking in flavour. I even ate them through my university years but their allure was probably their cheapness... I was a pretty eager eater - loved all vegetables except parsnips which I now adore. I steam them lightly and caramelize them in butter and brown sugar - one of my many fave vegetables. I liked meat in my childhood but eat it rarely today. I loved hotdogs but don't enjoy them today. I'll eat one at a barbecue but I'd rather have something else. Foods are so nostalgic. We travel back in our minds to the very moment of tasting. I love the evocative nature of food as well as the taste.
Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
I wonder if today's kids, 15 years from now, will be getting nostalgic about the same nasty kids foods. Definitely not Bourdain's kid unless she swears off game birds!

Captain Crunch!
Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
If I get a craving for a childhood food I have to cuccumb to it no questions asked. The only thing that I will not eat now (thank God for no craving) is lamb and liverwurst that THEN i liked, now I won't touch it.
Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
Snowballs (yeah the pink things), Candy Corn, those stupid orange peanut shaped marshmellow things (what were they supposed to taste like anyway?), anything marshmellow including Mallow Mars, But for some strange reason I like a smores (only made over an outside fire) maybe once a year.
I always hated bologna, didn't like hotdogs (unless drowning in ketchup) until I was a teenager (and discovered really good mustard, not that yucky yellow stuff) and now I only eat them at the "game" or grilled crispy from The Blarney Stone. Guilty pleasure - and then I am sorry, Big Mac, Chocolate Shake and fries (only once a year) considering you can get a sublime burger with MacDonalds quality fries in so many places in NYC. Must be that special sauce. Always hated any cold cereal and still eat oatmeal (from scratch) the way my mom made it with milk, butter, sugar and cinnamon - a true comfort food on a crisp cold winter morning.
Love:
Snickers
Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
but Lindt Chocolate is the adult thing, oh those truffles!
Boo on who said Girl Scout Cookies, support a good cause, eat the thin mints and tagalongs (another guilty pleasure that I insist on sharing with my entire family).
I am a New York food snob and a former restaurant professional so I crave the stuff I can't make myself. Never got into frosting in a can or brownies from a mix. I can make it faster and better.
DISTROY ALL PEEPS! Must try blowing them up in the microwave, thanks for the idea.
Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
Am I the only person who cannot eat Captain Crunch cereal as an adult? OMG the stuff shreds the roof of your mouth and put you into insulin shock. What was I not thinking?
Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
Ramen Noodles. That pure salt seasoning packet and those waxy noodles. My friends and I used to LOVE them for an after school snack. They are the one food I absolutely can't stomach anymore.
I loves me some Skettios, though!
Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults
Gad! You execute Peeps -- for fun! (Gulp!) I adore Peeps, and I'm probably old enough to be your grandmother. I also still like Moon Pies, but I nuke them so they become s'mores-like. I also have learned to love exceedingly dark rich chocolate, assorted organ meats and all the other frou-frou foods favored by self-proclaimed gourmands. The difference, I believe, is that in childhood we only THOUGHT we could have eaten Peeps for breakfast, lunch and dinner; we couldn't have then anymore than we could now. All things in moderation -- even Peeps.
