Snapshots from the UK: Pizza Express's Leggera Pizzas

I tried one of the Leggera pizzas when I visited London in May and loved it! I think it's a wonderful idea, like getting two menu items in one. I blogged about it here.

LOL... the comparison of tiramisu to Boone's or Mad Dog is hilarious.

The Food at Ikea: Cheap and Good

I completely agree with this! My parents and I have chosen Ikea as a lunch destination before, when we don't even need any furniture, just food. The meatballs are the best, and anything with Daim is to die for. Also, the Kristian Regale sparkling cider available in the shop is wonderful.

Thanksgiving Appetizers

I did the antipasto thing one year and my family adored it.

Question of the Day: What movie has the best dinner scene?

A dinner scene that is memorable for being cringe-worthy and hilarious (rather than delicious) is the one in "The Birdcage," when the hosts are desperately trying to cover up the homoerotic images on their china and the fact that "Mother Coleman" is actually a man (while she charms the pants off the conservative senator).

Question of the Day: What are your favorite "simple" foods?

I'm echoing banana with peanut butter. Salty and sweet with protein and nutrients. Perfect. Also tomatoes with fresh mozzarella and basil, and good chewy bread with olive oil and salt. And fresh-picked berries in the summertime.

From Talk

What food do you wish you liked, but don't?

Olives. I love Mediterranean food and olive oil, but olives themselves are just not palatable to me. I'm working on it, though.

i love pizza express and always eat there when I'm in London. They're excellent, and I am somewhat of a pizza snob. Can't wait to go back!

Had my first Leggera Pizza (Gustosa) on Saturday and it was better than a regular pizza with side salad. The salad was rocket (arugula), baby spinach and cherry plum tomatoes which worked better than the regular side salad of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and regular tomatoes. As for the hole, I thought it worked as the crust was crisper than a regular pizza and I suspect they end up as baked mini breads on the Antipasto Platter which were good.

Don't want a hole in my pizza at all! WTF for???? I wouldn't mind the greens on top though but a hole? I'd rather have a "whole" pizza with a salad on the side!

I'm so excited everyone loves Pizza Express like I do! I actually do wish that either they or this idea would come to the States. Which, veggie, is what I'm doing this week. But I'm sure I'll be back in the UK soon.

I'm fine with greens piled on top of the pizza, but please don't cut a hole in my pizza!

Tip: if you're mobile's on Orange, you can get two-for-one cinema tickets as well as two-for-one pizzas (plus free garlic bread) at Pizza Express on Wednesday. We try and go a few times a month...'Kids, you're staying with Uncle Rory! How much fun will that be?'

no thanks, a slice and a side salad works fine for me if that's what i'm in the mood for. this seems like a solution in need of a problem.

That sounds delicious! I can imagine that that might even go over well in the US.

I have fond memories of Pizza Express, when I lived in the UK. It doesn't fit in the normal description of a 'chain', especially in comparison with gaudy US chains.
That begs a start of another Topic - what are the best US chains that break away from the norm...I digress...
Before I go, I'd call out Peet's Coffee in California, as another stand out - great artisan pastries, decent strong coffee and no wifi in sight!

The Food at Ikea: Cheap and Good

The nearestr Ikea is four hours away. We do try to go whenever we can. The free standing kitchen storage unit we have is a wonderfully useful and a solid piece of furniture. (I was able to bribe someone to put it together for me by giving them my old microwave.) I saw all the pieces - I got the better deal.

But I think you meatball lovers have been overcome by the fumes from too much pdf boards. I had the meatballs several years ago and there were awful. My partner agreed. We have never eaten there since. Buy cheap Euro-origin food at Trader Joe's. Not Ikea.

has anyone had a panzarotti from ikea? it's like a pizza pocket. i'm from orange county so maybe they only have it on the west coast? they are delicious.

@ OneWallKitchen & amanda0730..... this is kinda a shot in the dark, but after squinting at the picture of the menu from the article, i think the combo is $2 because you get a polish sausage instead of a hot dog. talk about tricky!

The Food at Ikea: Cheap and Good

I love love love the meatballs at IKEA. I always buy a 5-pound bag of the frozen meatballs to take home with me, and heat them up with lingonberry or red currant jam when I get home. They rarely last very long.

My former roommate, a native Swede, assures me that IKEA's meatballs are remarkably authentic.

The nearest Ikea to me is 40 min away, I usually don't indulge in the food because there is a great grocery store next to the Ikea. Things there I can't find at home. I like the cheap $2.00 throw rugs!!!!

The Food at Ikea: Cheap and Good

This is just scary.

Why does it seem the Ikea food all comes in shades of washed-out browns with an emphasis on tan, white, and spots of red for accent? Is that part of the decor of furniture store gastronomy?

Meat, fries, and three desserts with one even having a dessert of it's own, all topped off by a hot dog and samples? It's a wonder we can waddle our way there.

I can't even imagine what kind of "food" goes into it to make it so cheap and what sort of chems make it taste as it does. It does show that people will go out of their way for "bargain" food. Want people to show up? Give gratuitous grub. Worked for us with the PTA. Couldn't get parents to come for Open House at their child's school to find out out what Junior did all day but when we bribed them with free dinner we were over-run with entire families including Grandma. A friend of mine told me about his mom making him take her to town for the Fourth of July so they could stand in line for 3 hours to get a free hot dog. He kept saying he'd be happy to buy her one but she'd have none of that. She wanted the crappy one of unknown origin because she was getting a "deal."

How the United States was finally conquered; with the partly assembled furnishing cuisine of Scandanavia sold in modular units. Indeed, ordering by picture and paying 50 cents extra for a complete combo thinking it's a heck of deal. P.T. Barnum would be proud.

I'm off to brush up on my Nordic languages...

The $1 soft serve frozen yogurt was surprisingly delicious when I tried it - not the best frozen yogurt I've ever had, but for a dollar, it's a great value!
