Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby Renamed 'Hubby Hubby' in Support of Gay Marriage
Are they sending any of the profits to gay rights campaigns or is it just PR?
Serious Green: Upgrading School Lunch
Sadly, "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch" is even more true when it comes to schools. Nice ideas, good luck funding it. Especially if part of the plan is taking out the junk food machines that *do* draw in revenue, for better or worse.
p.s. "sugar = hyperactivity" has been debunked for a long time now

Just how high does one have to be to think, "This is going to be the awesomest tattoo EVER!"...and then actually go through with it?

Or skip the picnic, eat the crumb cake, and have a portable defibrillator standing by just in case. (But for full disclosure, I should mention I am a crumb-cakeaholic in dietary rehab)

Foodie vs. (Vegan) Foodie: Let's Stop Dropping Anvils Already
@dbcurrie--it was a rhetorical question, flipping it around. Besides which, health issues or food preparation jobs have no bearing on this debate.
p.s. I'm a unicorn!
Foodie vs. (Vegan) Foodie: Let's Stop Dropping Anvils Already
Can someone be considered a foodie who would never, never, never eat any kind of vegetation for any reason? If it didn't walk, swim, or slither it's never going to cross their lips?
Gluten-Free Tuesday: If It Doesn't Have Gluten in It, I'm Eating It
I love eating umeboshi on rice, I'll have to try the vinegar! Sounds delicious!
Cook the Book: 'Bite-Size Desserts'
Salted caramels. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
Braunschweiger and yellow mustard sandwiches.
Pepperoni, cream cheese, and mustard on a bagel (not for a long time, though...stupid diet)
Cold plates of cheese, pretzels, pickles and olives. Maybe some salami if I'm energetic enough to slice it. So lazy!
I Want This: Ensaimadas
Mmm, lardy croissant...must visit Majorca.
How to Make Pizza Bianca at Home
This is the first SE recipe I've printed out. Can't wait to try it! Looks so good.
Serious Green: Save Money and Time, Cut Down on Waste by Joining a Co-op or Buying Club
If joining a co-op comes with free viewings of nibbly bunnies, I'm totally in.
Taste Test: Gluten-Free, Vegan-Friendly Shirataki Noodles
If you rinse thoroughly (VERY thoroughly), and use a strongly flavored sauce, they're fine, if chewy. The off taste comes from not rinsing enough, you really gotta keep it moving through running water for at least a few minutes. And yeah, cream sauces are way too delicate, and you're used to pasta that soaks it up. Puttanesca or arribbiata, strong red sauces, work better if you're trying to duplicate more traditional "pasta" dishes.
It's never great, but if you're worried about calories or other health concerns, they can be a valid stand-in when you're desperate. And the protein content is awesome!
Cook the Book: Easy Gluten-Free Baking
I am a sucker for a fresh, crisp, light, buttery croissant. Hard to get a good one nowadays--so many mushy, tasteless, stale "crescents" have taken over the market and changed expectations. Just like good French bread. Ruined by people who want it soft and unstaleable.
Do Biodegradable Spoons Ruin the Ice Cream Experience?
I like the little wooden paddles. The plastic ones, like Adam said, often hurt when you purse your lips to get the ice cream out of the dip of the spoon. I've never had that with the flat wood, and I don't think I've ever gotten a biodegradable one (I usually eat soft serve cones, and the yogurt place I go to has plastic)
Do you have a recipe you won't share?
I'm sad when people die and their recipes go with them. Cooking is a dying art and hoarding good recipes doesn't help. At least leave your requested recipes in your will, if you don't want to share now!
Should Junk Food Help Pay for Health Care?
Junk food tax--are you going to tax fruit juice, USDA prime beef, olive oil, etc? What makes one food "junk" and another not? How do you define it in a legislative way?
BMI is BS, as already pointed out. Athletes with any sort of muscle bulk would end up paying more, despite the fact they're among the healthiest people around. Manual laborers by the same token.
If someone is underweight, should they pay a surcharge on low-calorie, low-fat, healthy food? Being underweight also costs more to the health system, you know.
Omitting Soda Pop
1. Count calories
2. Brush your teeth
3. Juice, milk, and other non-water beverages are often as expensive if not more
4. Personal preference
5. So?
6. So?
7. So?
8. Aluminum is recyclable, and every beverage requires water.
I don't drink much soda because I don't care for most flavors or the carbonation, but it's not the devil's drink either. Everything in moderation! The anti-soda temperance movement is getting worrisome.

Blue M&Ms May Help Spinal Injuries
Sooo...how many M&Ms do I need to eat to get the benefits? I better start now!
Eating with Dieters
Perhaps she hasn't shared her health concerns with you, out of fear you would be judging her choices or nagging when she falls off the wagon. It's often easier to just say you're dieting than trying to explain.
If she's not saying anything to you about what you eat, then you should order whatever you want without pressure. People have different tastes, different moods. Feeling like you have to order the same way sounds almost co-dependent. You're individuals!
Snapshots from Greece: Fage Yogurt
Low-fat yogurts are usually awful, but the Fage Total 2% is remarkably good, and only 130 calories for 200g (about 7oz). It actually tastes like yogurt instead of sour gunk! My husband will eat it with just about anything, we even went on a special honey shopping tour just to go with it.
Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'
My husband's the cook, I'm the baker. A match made in gastronomic heaven, much to our waistbands' chagrin.
My worst baking disaster? Anything from the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook. I've tried multiple items, and nothing ever came out. Looking at their forums, a lot of other people had the same problem. I generally have great success with Cook's Illustrated but for some reason the ATK recipes just do not work well, or I picked the wrong ones (devil's food cake should not be this difficult!)
Should Fast Food Chains Give Kids Toys?
Because if the fast-food companies didn't offer toys, our kids would eat nothing but salad with fat-free dressing every day. Yeah.
Do Biodegradable Spoons Ruin the Ice Cream Experience?
yeah, that's a ridiculous statement. who charges $5 extra for a cone? i don't think i've ever paid $5 total for ice cream even for a big sundae.
Do Biodegradable Spoons Ruin the Ice Cream Experience?
I very rarely get a cone...just don't care for the taste or texture of cones very much (not waffle cones or those cake cones either). Don't like 'em made with chocolate, don't like 'em dipped in chocolate, and don't like 'em with sprinkles. I prefer to get a bowl. And sometime's they'll charge an extra $5 for one (a flattened piece of dough is very rarely worth $5 to me).
Foodie vs. (Vegan) Foodie: Let's Stop Dropping Anvils Already
You can certainly be a foodie and vegan. While we may have some dietary restrictions compared to the average eater, we are also much more aware of what we eat than the average eater. Being vegan makes you aware of and appreciate your food just that much more.
Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable
So I didn't see the last post, and I haven't read all the comments, but it's a topic that depends on the situation, imo. If it was a large group of people, I would ask again, because that does eat up a lot of one waitress's time. I dined at a nice little place with a friend a few months back, and it was my second time there (pretty sure the waiters recognized me). I had tipped well the first time, as it was a great experience, and the second time, my friend and I completely miscalculated the tip. My waiter came back around and asked us if everything was ok. It was a bit awkward, but I'm glad he did ask, because he deserved more than the $3 we had somehow managed to leave.
Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable
I think the whole idea of tipping is ridiculous: do you tip the toll collector for taking your money? Do you tip the gas man for reading your meter? Do you tip your IT guy for fixing your computer? Of course not. Now, obviously, they don't live on tips. GUESS WHAT: NEITHER SHOULD WAITERS! How insane is it that a customer has to pay basically twice: for the food and for the service? Can you imagine if we had to tip UPS person for delivering the package to your house? Here's another tidbit: are the dishes heavier at T.G.I. Fridays than they are in a fancy steakhouse with $100+ dishes? Where do you come off with a sense of entitlement to a $20 tip just because the food was $100, whereas at Fridays a $20 plate would only get a $4 tip? If restaurant you work at charges that much for food, let them pay you! Enough is enough!
Foodie vs. (Vegan) Foodie: Let's Stop Dropping Anvils Already
I became a vegan at sixty-one (I'm 61 and 1/2) out of sheer curiosity and a desire to reduce my negative impact on Mother Earth. I wanted to know what my childrens' friends were experiencing, what was piquing the interest of some respected authors and artists, what the Skinny Bitches of the world knew that I didn't, and, most of all, how one could cook well on a vegan regime. I've been having a ball with it! There are some anxious moments in the kitchen, since almost every meal is a wild experiment. And, I'll admit, traveling can be a hungry experience. Nevertheless, I'm not interested in going back to my carnivorous ways.
It's interesting to encounter the assumptions my acquaintances make about veganism: they seem to assume that I've got a moral stake in it somewhere, that I've gone uber-Buddhist, that I feel superior. They have trouble understanding that I might simply be exercising an option. They say it is good for the functioning and longevity of our cognition to learn new things in our senior years; since I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, I wondered how I might turn that time into a real challenge. I think I've found a way I can feel good about.
I'm blogging about it with what passes for dry Southern wit and shots at seasoned wisdom at http://www.maturelandscaping.com. Am I the only senior nouveau vegan extant?
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I really enjoy a rich crumb cake and anything with that much butter has got to be good. Then with the sour cream GIVE ME A FORK a gallon of whole milk and get out of my way!
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I'm sure this is incredible, and as a former "Butterton" family member, I would love to make it. However, I have great success with Martha Stewart's New York Style Crumb cake.....absolutely delicious! And might be a great alternative for those who want to curtail a little of the butter.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
NY style crumb cake is 2 - 3 parts crumbs to 1 part cake, so if you're freaking about the butter, halve the crumb recipe for regular crumb cake.
Or better yet, use only half; freeze the rest airtight and have uber-fast crumb cake next time.
Also, regarding flat topping: I'm surprised that "domestic goddess" Martha apparently doesn't know the secrets to great crumb topping:
1. using fingertips, push clumps of topping together to form large crumbs (large peas to kidney bean sized).
2. make the crumbs BEFORE the batter and refrigerate or freeze until ready to place evenly on the batter.
3. You need to place the larger crumbs so the entire top is covered and you don't break the clumps you invested your time in making.
The chilled clumps retain their shape during baking so the cake is be-yoo-tiful and the big crumbs provide a great texture treat.
If I'm serving this for a plate & fork situation, I like to incorporate a thin layer of perfectly ripe sliced summer fruit in the batter. (In the cake, not between the cake & crumbs: that makes the sugar dissolve and the cake soggy.) Can make the cake too tender to eat out of hand.
Hope this is helpful to someone.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
Hey, I agree with Paula Deen of the Food Network "you can never have too much butter" -- seems like something Julia Childs would also say!
I'm going to eat this and enjoy the rich, buttery taste with each bite. As for serving 32 people -- I'm not sure I will share this one.
Taste Test: Gluten-Free, Vegan-Friendly Shirataki Noodles
Sadly I have dieted so much that there are times when even these taste good.
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I've made this before but it's not my favorite. I have been on a quest for the perfect crumb cake and the best so far was by Carole Walter from GREAT COFFEE CAKES, STICKY BUNS, MUFFINS & MORE. It's yummy although best eaten the first day. I still make new crumb cake recipes whenever I can find a good one, just in case it's "the one".
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
Speaking of honey cakes.....I recd., what I thought, was an authentic honey cake recipe from a friend. I, in turn, shared it with another friend and when she made it it turned out badly. Now I'm afraid to try it. Does anyone have an "authentic" honey cake recipe they will share?

Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
this is my favorite cake in the whole world, but i use cake flour, and it makes everything so light you won't even notice all that butter going down!
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
it's probably not heartburn hellojodi, it's most likely your gallbladder revolting.
I also agree that there's a LOT of butter in there.........however, in ratio to the amount of flour, it's not totally outrageous. Really good pate brisee uses 2 sticks/2-1/2c.flour and, the recipe does make a lot as well. Still, I'd follow directions & only make for a crowd............the temptation would be w-e-i-g-h to much for me!
Sunday Brunch: Crumb Cake
I can drink a gallon of milk in one sitting I bet with no problem, eat an entire cheese-covered pizza, but any desserts with a ton of butter or cream cheese give me heartburn. What's up with that?
Gluten-Free Tuesday: If It Doesn't Have Gluten in It, I'm Eating It
I'd really love it if you could post the GF bread recipe.
I'm not a celiac (technically) but I don't eat gluten, aside from the occasional bit of oats..
Gluten seems to give me allergies identical to hayfever, so it was really surprising that my "hayfever" went away within a week of cutting gluten out of my diet.
All the bought GF breads I've tried have been dire. They have no substance whatsoever, and I have yet to find a tasty GF bread recipe that WORKS.
Pleeeeeease post it =P

aw, Haglered, it's so good to meet people like you. What amazes me about Christians is just how JUDGEMENTAL (hmm...mental?) most of you are. Isn't God supposed to be the one true judge?
By the way, I'm a lesbian (married in Connecticut about two weeks after it was legalized), and I'm also a catholic. And God loves me just as much as he loves you. Remember, we are ALL God's children.

No gramlee, you're a moron because you base your decisions on a collection of fairy tales. Of course it's your prerogative to buy or not buy a product; just as it's our choice to point and laugh when you make a fool of yourself in a public forum. You deserve as much respect as someone who claims the world is flat.

All these companies may have an agenda...and when they make their agenda obvious, it is then my right to no longer buy their product if I choose not to. At least I still have that right, but maybe not much longer with the current administrations communist agenda. And Doctrine....I'm a "moron" because my opinion differs from yours? Hmm I thought liberals were supposed to be open-minded?? I guess not! Oh I forgot, its okay to hate on white christians...just not any other group, such as gays. To base an opinion on "religous nonsense"...very cliche response to anyone opposing gay marriage. All opinions are based on some source within your mind...who is to say a religous source is any more "nonsensical" than a non-religous source. All opinions are just that--opinions....with none being truly right or wrong in nature. But most peoples minds cannot comprehend that, its comical really lol

When I buy ice cream, I am not out to support a politcal agenda, I want to satisfy my sweet tooth.

Such a shame people are still so backwards in this country. Nasty, nasty comments make me sad. Oh well, more ice cream for us non-bigots then! :D
Ben & Jerry's Chubby Hubby Renamed 'Hubby Hubby' in Support of Gay Marriage
That is TOTALLY DISGUSTING!!!!
Such support shows a total lack of morality.
I don't buy Ben and Jerry's, I certainly will not now.
If you ignore Natures (or I should say God's) laws you are on the road to destruction. Such is the case with the homosexual community. Emotional illness causes them to behave unnatually. Supporting this unnatural activity is as wholesome as pushing tainted twinkies.
Maybe there is a connection there???
