Roberta's: The DIY Pizzeria

Ok you guys. I need to be REAL here.

Food: mediocre at BEST. Came semi cold. The smallest most expensive over priced pizza Ive had ever in NYC. New Yorkers know what good pizza is... this is a cop out.

Service: horrible. The place said on its website that it had BYOB. So I bought some wine and headed over. When I got there, they told me as of yestreday the BYOD was over and now I had to pay $15 corking fee for my bottle!! Outageaos. This starte yesterday and they dont even have a trabsition where they let people know with a little bit in advance as they find the time to update the info on the sites! Really incredible. Not even the most expensive weddings have such an outrageous corking fee!
When I heard this most dissapointing news, I got a little irate at the waitress, who whimpered away and later came back to cry to me that I had been "mean" to her but offered to uncork my bottle for free. I did not accept the belated attempt to have decent service...

WE LIVE IN A CONSUMER-DRIVEN MARKET! I exclaimed this to my neighbors at the community table, who found this really funny and shared my exact frustrations. A shit feast started... we sat around talking about the future of consumer relations. With these financial institutions crumbling around us, we MUST realize the power is in OUR hands, the consumers hands, to define what and who survives in trhe future markets... user reviews andservice ssuch as YELP are what are defining the consumer trends.... I may be an artist living in Bushwick and all, but just because trendies have arrived and unpacked their suitcases doesnt mean those who strive to live a REAL life in NYC suck our thumbs.

Oh, one more anecdote from this fun filled excursion: the waitress replied when I said that I am a YELP contributor, "you shouldnt even be reading those websites. Can anyone help me figure THAT one out???"

Roberta's: The DIY Pizzeria

I loved Roberta's; if someone came for a visit, I would take them there. I liked the seating arrangements--long communal tables; I liked the refurbished building and outdoor seating; I liked the BYOB policy (now, however, extinct); I liked everything about the place, including the pies. But after my experience there this past weekend, I can't say that I'll be back. The proprietor of the place--I don't know his name--revealed himself to be a most tacky and unprofessional pie-slinging gigolo. I had been waiting at the bar for a table, along with my two companions, for nearly an hour--when a table finally opened up, I shuffled off my stool and headed over so as to seat myself--however, I was preempted by a foursome--a most loathsome and wolfish foursome I might add--whom I had seen enter the 'joint' nearly 20 minutes after my own punctilious arrival. Well, as you can imagine, I was in a huff. This huff lead me to leave within it and so I did--suffering no obsequious deterrent from the proprietor--no, "Sorry, a table will be ready soon, have a drink on me" no "I'm so sorry, here, have a free pile of pig cheek to assuage your bubbling bile" no "forgive me, sweet prince," (aside to lowly waitress) "give this man a free brick of fresh 'moz' and a customized bib!". In short, SERIOUS EATS friends, this man did nothing!! I was waiting for pizza--PIZZA--the finest of foods--and this man allowed a mongrel crew of usurpers to derail my chug-a-lug. Fie, fie, fie on you Roberta.

Also, @luxxxxx - At $8 for a 12" margherita pizza, I can't really see how Roberta's can be "the smallest most expensive overpriced pizza" around. And getting "a little bit irate at the waitress" over a policy she obviously didn't create is immature and disrespectful.

It sounds like your beef isn't with Roberta's, but with the fact that Bushwick is gentrifying (due to "artists" like yourself coming a few years ahead of everybody else) and you're pissed that there's a destination restaurant that will encourage more folks to check out the neighborhood, then boo hoo, your rent will go up next time you've got to sign a lease, and the families who have been owning these dead factory buildings for decades and decades will actually make some money. You live in Brooklyn. That's how that goes. Move to East New York if you want cheap rent and to be safe from "trendies."

Just went to Roberta's for the first time this week - moved into an office in one of the loft buildings on Ingraham - and it is phenomenal. The food was terrific, the service was good...do not miss this place. It's worth making the L-train trip for their pizza and calzone!
