eathermaiden "That adding salt to water will raise/lower the pasta water sufficiently to cook it faster.""

the reason for this is that by saltwater has a lower boiling point then regular water so it "boils faster" so they assume tha the food will cook faster as a result when in reality is jsut bubbles at a lower teperature

that said u should still salt it because thats where a huge amount of the flavor of pasta comes from

over all though im astounded at all the people that are badmouthing all these foods and trying to preach the vegitarian live well sorry to say not everyone wants to remove most of the enjoyment from there food

We had a local Donato's that folded very quickly. We're right outside Philadelphia and pride ourselves in our dinky little corner pizza places! I had heard a while back that Donato's was owned by McDonalds. Anyone know if that is truth or fiction?

I'd make english muffin Pizzas (which can be really tasty actually), over buying "pizzas" from any of these tasteless chains. Yet in still, much like Food Network who aired a Burger King versus McDonald's special a few yers ago...I realize that a true Pizza sounding board like slice needs to cover all bases and include "chain" stories.

If "laemtandrew" was serious about "MVP", etc, at least the comments ended on a hilarious note.

Check out Nessy Burger just north of San Diego, Ca. off the I-15 exit hwy 76. this place is known for it's simple but delicious fare. I've tried the rest you need to try the best! This place is a little trailer on the side of the road and you eat at picnic tables that you might share with a neighbor. Nothing special about the ambience...unless you like the great outdoors..fun place.

I don't know if anyone mentioned The VORTEX Bar and Grill in Atlanta. They claim to have the best burger in ATL. And my husband and I DO love their burgers. The two locations have a biker/goth atomsphere and its awesome. Please try "The Vortex" if you're in the ATL area.

I also love Fuddruckers, but it seems like it tasted a lil better in NM. Its got that Southwestern taste and the green chili burger, YUM! And try to review the In-and-Out Burgers (I wish we had one here). I"m craving an In and Out burger right now!

From Serious Eats

Fuddruckers is really the best, but they closed in our area (Bucks County,PA) Second best is Outback and Cheesburger in Paradise (which are owned by the same company). Still looking for another Fuddruckers.

Dude, forget those above, they suck. Seriously though Ruby Tuesday's is the only chain burger that I have eaten that will not only serve it rare, the way meat was intended to be eaten. but it is also Prime. They also have one of the best salad bars I have seen.
If you ever make it out to western Montana try a place in Hamilton called Naps, they will also serve your burger rare. One of the best I have had.

From Serious Eats

@casmil226 - I agree, Logan's makes a great burger. I think it's the best thing on the menu.
Houston's and J. Alexander's also make delicious burger.

From Serious Eats

Mid-Range Burgers

When you survey the remaining restaurants be sure to include Chili's! Chili's has excellent burgers! I can honestly say I've never had a bad burger at Chili's. Unfortunately Ruby Tuesday's depends on the location.........not very consistent between restaurants. I loved the food in Bessemer AL at Ruby Tuesday's but it was HORRIBLE at the one near Loudon TN.........
For fast food, Wendy's seems to be the best. For sit-down dining Chili's is my top pick........

I would try Max & Erma's. I know there are locations in PA but they are worth it. I am picky and while I like Red Robin you can't compare to Max & Erma's. The only other comparison was the Ground Round back in the day when they had like a WinSchulers soft cheese topping. They stopped doing it back in the late 70's and after trying them twice after the change I never would go back.

I don't know if there is one nearby, but oddly enough I think Logan's Roadhouse (it's a steakhouse) has excellent burgers. Ofcourse I don't think they would cook it MR, but I think they still kick toosh.

From Serious Eats

Please take time to review Fuddruckers. I am very picky about my burgers, and they have the best of all the national chains I've tried. You gotta love a place that actually offers a full one pound burger patty!

From Serious Eats

Mid-Range Burgers

I too recommend Fuddruckers. I am not sure if this franchise is back east but Hamburger Hamlet is also a Red Robin level burger place.

I think its also important to add that at Red Robin you can order your burger Protein Style. They serve this as a low carb option (no bun wrapped in lettuce) and with a salad instead of fries.

I'm not entirely sure if there are other locations outside of california, but there are at least a couple lin the bay area It's called Kirk's Steakburgers. They have the most tender hamburgers i've ever eaten, and you only recieve the patty and the bun from the cook. You get to choose from a variety of sauces and condiments to put on your burger yourself.

laemtandrew: You're joking right? "MVP" and "Second String" are not pizzerias. They're the descriptions of ... oh, never mind. AGH.

From Serious Eats

I've been in Texas for 2 years and apparently a great Texas burger is a very thin, wide, well-done cooked piece of meat, and sometimes topped with tostadas or beans, etc (man, that's funny!)...definitely not my "thing". However, even though MOST of the folks in Texas don't seem to know much about great burgers (for god's sake Whataburger is the most popular burger chain here and they are awful). There is a really good local place that just opened up calleD BIGZ Burger Joint. Although most locals will slam the place because it's owned by a popular local gourmet chef and it caters to the local Hummer yuppie crowd, the burgers here are thick (each patty is 8 oz), cooked perfectly as a burger should be just as the menu says "with a little pink inside unless requested otherwise" , juicy and very, very tasty. It actually gives Fuddruckers, which is by far and away one of the best burgers you can get ANYWHERE, a run for its money.

Ok, where is MVP pizza and Second String??? I've tried to google these pizza joints. If there is going to be throwdown and recommend these places, put the @#$!&*$@@@!!# address and location so people can order one, DUH!

I spent 20 years plus running around the country in the military. I've had pizza around the country. NYC, Chicago, Old Forge style, every chain there is, and my personal favorite, Erie pizza.

There's a lot to be said for pizza you grow up with. I'm from Erie, PA and our pizza, especially the crust, is quite unique. They usually use par-baked shells that are somewhere between thin and thick crust. I know it sounds sacreligious, but I've never had better. The ovens are seasoned from high use and they add a nice char taste to the bottom. The sauce is spicy and plentiful, and they have an enticing aroma that hits you as soon as you walk in the door.

I live in California for now (0 good pizzas in this state), but I was just home a couple of weeks ago, and I can't get over how much I love Erie pizza. Erie's such a small town that I don't expect our food to reach much of an audience, but if you ever travel through, try Patti's, Skipperino's, Valerio's, Serafini's, Presque Isle, or one of the other mom and pop places.

We had a Domino's in the heart of downtown Erie, but it went out of business. For a town of around 100K there are more mom and pop pizza joints than any other food, Erie's a great wing town too. Like NYC, Erieite's take their pizza seriously. Before you laugh, think about it, not one Domino's. I don't have anything against Domino's other than the fact that I dislike their food.

Yes, we're more famous for Brian Wells, the "Pizza Bomber", but Mama Mia's where he worked is a great shop as well.

Donato's is the biggest chain in Cincinnati. The quality of their toppings is very good, but sorry, that "cracker" crust is a big turn off to me. NY style fresh dough is great, but that's not what Donato's is. Tasty pizza due primarily to the quality toppings, but lousy crust in my opinion. They cut their round pies in to whacky squares too. I don't care for that either.

The comments about St Louis and about people that moved to NY are probably accurate. If you grew up with a certain style like I did, you tend to remember it fondly. As far as I'm concerned, all of the chains are abhorrent, and just support your local establishments.

Although I can't endorse Steak 'n Shake (I've tried them at two locations and they were average burgers to me), I do give a thumbs-up to Fuddrucker's. Several people mentioned that they used to be better (I agree) but they still can make a good burger.

One place I haven't seen mentioned is a chain that's mainly in the South (but expanding) called Backyard Burgers. I've been to two locations and one is better than the other but both offer a tasty burger. They use Angus beef and the toppings are always fresh. A regular cheeseburger is delicious but you can also get a 'Black and Blue' burger that has a blue cheese topping or a portobello and Swiss burger that is excellent. They have a website with pics of some of their offerings. Just search 'Backyard Burgers' and you'll find it. They have other menu offerings that aren't included on the website.

On the west coast is a bake-at-home chain called Papa Murphy's. For our household it was the only tolerable cheapy crap pizza, made more tolerable by being able to pick up the unbaked pizzas and then refrigerate them until we were drunk enough to bake them.

Anyway, Murphy's had what they called "garlic sauce," a cream sauce not unlike alfredo. A friend tipped us off one day to order "pink sauce," or have them mix the garlic and traditional tomato together and I have to say it was rather brilliant, particularly when ordering a pie with a lot of vegetables on it. Makes me wonder if Papa John's will do the same thing.

Oh, and I live in Donato's country right now and I vote no. No Donato's.

From Slice

Pizza Showdown: The Best Delivery Pizza

The only good chain pizza I have ever had is Donatos. Everything else on the menu is terrible: sandwiches, salads, wings, ciabattas, thick crust pizza. But the thin crust pizza more than makes up for it. Pizza as good as a lot of places in Brooklyn and NJ.

Unfortunately, Donatos is only available in Ohio, Alabama, Northern Kentucky, Indianapolis, and Orlando. But if you ever want to experience the best pizza in fly over country, this is it.

@chasgoose: You may have convinced me. Though it will be many weeks before I order a Papa John's, Pizza Hut, or Domino's again. ;)

From Slice

Pizza Showdown: The Best Delivery Pizza

Actually the "Alfredo" pizzas from Papa John's are kind of good. You get around the overly sweet sauce problem that plagues most chain pizzas by replacing the sauce with something resembling a more creamy and garlicky butter. I think there is one with Chicken and Bacon and that is delicious (mostly because Bacon + Butter + Garlic= always delicious).

None of them deliver in my area. The only place that does is Italian and their food is inedible. :(

@Prairie: Thanks. I think we did have a PJ's thin-crust, and of all PF's crusts, I like it the most, but we had a Hawaiian pizza on the thin crust, and it was not good, so it did not get a mention here.

@ShayAlyce: Frozen pizza probably is better. And, yes, chix tastes better on CPK pies.

@j_diddy: I'll have to check to see where Donato's has locations. I know the name but have never had a Donato's pie.

@Dutchy: Yes. Pizza is subjective, but it's fun to talk about, no?
