Dinner Tonight: Korean Barbecue Beef Bulgogi

If anyone else is as lazy as I can be, TJ's has a pretty good pre-marinated
Bulgogi in the fresh meat department. Not as good, but if you have to
get something on the table in a hurry, it takes about 5 minutes total because
it is sliced thin.

How Long does it take Your Household to Finish a Loaf of Bread?

I buy a loaf of bread every other day. I have 2 kids eating a piece of toast with breakfast and a sandwich for lunch every day.

I am currently reading "Little House In The Big Woods" to my nearly 6 year old daughter and the chapter about boiling maple syrup is so wonderful. The whole book (the whole series, actually) is amazing food reading. Get it to read to your kids and you will enjoy it yourself. I promise.

Well, I've been saying and spelling this wrong for my entire life. Live and learn!

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 13: Mardi Gras in N'Awlins with Emeril Lagasse

I love Carla!  She seems to really love what she is doing - even when things don't go well, she seems happy to be there and learning
from the situation.  She works her ass off but enjoys it.  She is the
opposite of Leah who seemed  pissed off every time she had to
try something new, which was a lot.

Have a Cold? Soothe Your Throat with These Remedies

When I was in college in the snow I had a terrible chest cold and my mother told me to go and get a bottle of bourbon and make a hot toddy (never mind I was 17 years old). I have never had a remedy work so well and you get a lovely, fuzzy feeling.  It's almost worth getting sick.

From Serious Eats

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 12: 'Top Chef,' Not 'Top Pussy'

I do love me some Carla.

Toby seemed thoroughly intimidated by the other judges –
as well he should have - and kept his smart-ass-college-boy remarks to himself.  Hallelujah.

The guest judges themselves were so interesting to watch.  They all
have reached a level of confidence in their own judgement that seems serene.  I like that they could disagree on what each liked without feeling like the other person needed to be right or wrong.  Very cool.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 11: One Fish, Two Fish, Another Bloody Fish

I am surprised the recap makes no mention of Jamie's dismissive
attitude toward Eric Ripert and his cuisine.  She could barely
contain her contempt for his cooking and, guess what, it showed
in her food and got her kicked to the curb.  I agree Leah has
stayed way too long at this party, but, seriously, Jamie is not
going to get very far if she can't show someone like Eric Ripert
a modicum of respect or at least be diplomatic about it.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 9: 'It Amused My Bouche'

The sound of Leah and Hosea slurping each other's faces was so
nasty - seriously, did they foley in extra slobbery noises? - I lost
my appetite for the rest of the show.  ACK.

I have made that or a similar recipe from epi, and it was very good. I think I used those asian vermicelli noodles instead of rice. Also used cilantro in the wrap.

How Long does it take Your Household to Finish a Loaf of Bread?

Store bought, a couple of weeks. Home made or fresh from the oven slathered with butter (and maybe honey)...pretty much inhaled completely in one fell swoop (minutes from oven to tummy).

From Talk

How Long does it take Your Household to Finish a Loaf of Bread?

I can eat a whole loaf of bread by myself in less than a day, homemade or not.

While currently my metabolism can keep up I worry a little for the future.

From Talk

How Long does it take Your Household to Finish a Loaf of Bread?

We don't do loaves we do baguettes ... it takes about 2 minutes, literally, I am not kidding!!! If I want a bite, I have to have it before bringing it into the house or hide it!

I've been listening to J-Gold on Good Food for years and this is the first time I've seen a picture of him. It's nuts when you finally put a face to a voice. I was expecting a small bespectacled man, not Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights!

I use my grandmother's recipe for a toddy. It calls for Myer's dark rum instead of whiskey and I think it makes a smoother toddy.

during my last bout with a nasty cold I discovered that chocolate soothes sore throats! ~ I'm partial to Halls Mentho-Lyptus cough drops, to Traditional Medicinals Gypsy Cold Care & Breathe Easy Teas with liberal amounts of honey, to oranges and to hot & sour soup.

Why Is There No 'N' in 'Restaurateur'?

This was a big lesson I learned in my first job at a city/regional mag. I had in big type on the front page "Restauaranteur" - I got a lot of letters over that.

From Serious Eats

Why Is There No 'N' in 'Restaurateur'?

I've got a serious opposition to the "word" restaurateur... not least of which is that it is silly and makes my language sensors queasy.

Have a Cold? Soothe Your Throat with These Remedies

my friend had these hoarhound cough drops she got at the drugstore... nice herbal taste for those like my who dont like the super sweet taste of most cough drops [i dont like the way the sugary stuff makes my lips and teeth feel all coated]. i havent found them again, but they were super effective.

From Serious Eats

Have a Cold? Soothe Your Throat with These Remedies

My mom, who is Polish, always chopped some fresh onions and added about 5-6 tablespoons of sugar; both get sealed in a jar. Come back about two hours later and the onion's chemical reactions with the sugar cause a tasty, sweet syrup to form that really ceases a cough. What can I say, natural is always preferred (and it just tastes really good too!)

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 13: Mardi Gras in N'Awlins with Emeril Lagasse

Fabio was robbed last night. I am sick of the piss poor attitude of Stephan. I liked him in the begininng, but I am just tired of his attitude, much like Leah's. He made the comment that Hosea's gumbo was gross or disgusting (or something close to that) and yet the judges, Emeril included found his to be far superior. Stephan doesn't have the ability or maturity to be good on his own merit, he constantly has to blast the other chefs to play up his own food. Why not just be good on your own? Carla did a nice job, and she might end up winning. I don't know about Hosea.....

From Serious Eats

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 13: Mardi Gras in N'Awlins with Emeril Lagasse

My heart was broken last night...as I anxiously held hands with my husband and waited for the judges decision. I have rooted for Stephan most of the season, but his arrogant attitude has soured me towards him. I don't care how well he cooks...Top Chef is more than cooking; it is the entire package! Shame on the judges for sending Fabio home. He cooks from his heart, and IS a TOP CHEF. Stephan is not above taking the shortcut and using prepared sausage...unlike Jeff who made it from scratch....

The finale should not be including Stephan. I truly feel the producers made this decision...he is the Chef you love to hate. It was a sad night to see Fabio go...Finale should have been Hosea, Carla and Fabio.

I don't think I will even watch the finale next week, and it will be the first episode I have missed in all 5 seasons.

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 13: Mardi Gras in N'Awlins with Emeril Lagasse

my feeling is that carla, jeff and hosea were the best.... but carla was maybe a little better than jeff and so thats how it had to go down. so sorry to see jeff gone. and let me say this, im sorry, stefan may be the best, i dont know..... but with his poor attitude... i wouldnt want to hand over my money to sit and eat at someones restaurant who was like that.

and again top chef is just that 'top in all things'. ( but i do wonder what kind of boss he is). best of luck to all.

From Serious Eats

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 13: Mardi Gras in N'Awlins with Emeril Lagasse

Wasn't one of the criticisms of the Euro Boys that they just didn't have soul? That's something that Carla certainly has in buckets.
Nonetheless, it seems that Stephan is (arguably) the best cook left. I think his attitude may keep him from running an efficient kitchen. Seems that Carla could rally her troops much more easily.
And, yep, Hosea comes in as an also ran...

From Serious Eats

'Top Chef' Season 5, Episode 13: Mardi Gras in N'Awlins with Emeril Lagasse

I think Fabio could have edged out if he had like the judges said "rimmed the glasses with spice"
Seemed like the cocktails were overlooked a bit and that could have given his entire selection just enough kick yet let him keep his Italian flair intact.

Plus BREAD! Come on!
