Snapshots from the UK: Purple Sprouting Broccoli
Yeah, it stays purple and is very pretty. I love the stuff, it has such a great flavour and is much nicer than ordinary broccoli. I think it is at its best simply steamed.
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
This bread is widespread in England and is known as tiger bread. I'm sure you can guess where I'm off to now!
Snapshots from the South of France: Rustic Macarons
Kerry, where abouts in Provence is this market? I'm dying to go there now!

Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
"word nerds" and "bookworms"
Wow, sounds like you hold librarians in really high esteem. As a librarian and member of the Facebook group, I'm really disappointed that such an attitude has found a home at SE.

Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's
The saying here in jolly ol' is "(crikey) it's Pimm's o'clock!" Very popular here, you can even get a tshirt that says that.
If you want to be authentically English, you say Pimm's and lemonade (which is more like 7up and Sprite), or simply Pimm's, not Pimm's cup.
Tips for Choosing Supermarket Coffee
I too like Trader Joe's, especially the Hawaiian blends they stock. I'll admit to being seduced by the packaging, but they always seem to have new and interesting coffees at a reasonable price. I'm almost out of the last batch I brough back to the UK and will have to switch back to something more local.
Serious Grape: ZEST, a Simple Mnemonic for Choosing Cookout Wines
Ice cold Sauvignon? How about simply chilled in order to enjoy the grape.
I'm looking forward to enjoying a few bottles of Vina Leyda 2007 Chilean Sauvignon Blanc at about $10 a bottle.
How To Save Money at Supermarkets
While I think you can save money depending on where you shop, it is worth remembering that stores like Whole Foods are not always the rip off people think. There was a great article published on how to eat oranically and healthily for $7 a day from Whole Foods:

Food as an Expression of British Class Warfare
If you watch UKTV Food or the programmes on the BBC, or read the newspaper, you know that Matthew Fort is right on and that much food programming and writing is not aimed at people who don't know how to cook, don't want to cook, and are middle class or higher. Most people talking about food here are easily identified as "posh", (whether or not they actually are) and they talk posh - Nigella, Hugh, Gordon, Mathew Fort, Marco, Rick Stein, Nigel Slater, and even Saint Delia herself.
While Jamie is quite "Mockney" and middle class, his latest book and television series on this side of the pond - "Jamie's Ministry of Food" is directly aimed at the lower and working classes. The people shown on the new series were miners, doormen, hairdressers, and single mums on benefits. They are not people Nigella or Ina would invite over to enjoy what they've cooked.
His new mission involves teaching ordinary people how to cook simple, straight forward, and tasty dishes with fresh ingredients that are readily available and then asking them to "pass on" the recipe by teaching their friends and family. The book is full of photographs, written in an easy to understand manner, and offers loads of alternatives and ideas of how to expand on the very tasty dishes. I've yet to make a bad one from the book.
Essentially, Jamie has taken Delia's mission of "How to Cook" of 10 years ago that was aimed at the middle class, and repackaged it in a modern and updated version for (young) people who never learned how to cook and those who have been largely ignored by the food media. He is teaching people how to cook healthy meals rather than eating ready or take away meals.
I think with this project, he has gained a lot of respect and admiration in the UK. The book is amazing, and has quickly become the one in my kitchen most nights of the week.
Snapshots from the UK: Percy Pigs
Looks like I need to set up a Percy Pig export business!
Dinner Tonight: Cottage Pie
Shepard's Pie = made with lamb mince
Cottage Pie = made with beef mince
Cumberland Pie = made with beed mince and topped with mash AND cheese
Gourmet Burger Kitchen Is Not Bad for the UK
I've not had a bad experience at GBK, but then again I'm out in the burbs, and not rushed in city proper. I do think the burgers at the Fine Burger Company are better, and so are their milkshakes! They also do 2 types of chips - English chips and French fries. Love their onion rings.
50 Homemade Holiday Gift Ideas
I make all the recipe variations of Dorie Greenspan's sables, wrap them in clear bags and tie with a big bow. They look so pretty all stacked up.
An Oven-Less Dessert: Steamed Devil's Food Cake
Sounds like a very British way to bake a dessert! Just like chocolate sponge "pudding"
London Dispatch: Dodging Espresso Machines for the Filter Coffee at Monmouth Coffee Co.
As I'm local to London, I often find myself at Borough Market on Friday or Saturday and enjoying a filter coffee from Monmouth as I stroll around the market.
I've never been to the proper cafe at the market (or any of the other branches), just the stall where they have the the coolest contraption for making their filter coffees - individual coffee cone filters suspended above the cups and the coffee is made to order. You're right, it is amazing!
Good tip about the bread and jam, an excuse to go to the shop!
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
Dutch Crunch is the best you can get when it comes to sandwiches. The best place to get a GREAT! sandwich is at Ike's Place on 16th off of Mission (Castro). The best sandwich I've ever had!
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
@Jethro--it does sound pretty good! I may try it myself--butter pecan is a very overlooked flavor and salty/sweet is an awesome combo. All of these sound great!
And well, library paste does sound good in a way, too! I think they are talking about that white, chalky stuff you stir with a plastic, Popsicle-style rod.
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
@HeartofGlass - I LOOOOOOVE YOUR "CHECKED OUT" IDEA!!! I love throwing a handful of Chex Mix into my plain vanilla but have never tried it with butter pecan...now, I must! Excellent name, too! I wonder if others realize the sheer amazing deliciousness of Chex Mix in ice cream?
@Sandalola - ALSO a great flavor combo suggestion!

Gooey Decimal System is not only a hilarious pun of a name, but the flavor itself also sounds delicious. I would buy it!
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
My SO thinks there should be a "library paste" flavor. I don't remember library paste so I have no idea what he's talking about...
I like the idea for Micro-phiche, but with tiny books instead of fish?
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
SeriousBookworm here, london_janice! :) but I can't think of anything much right now.

Great topic @Adam. Off the top of my head, and letting my nerd flag fly proudly....

Poetic Licorice (Vanilla ice cream with chunks of licorice)
A Tale of Two Cookies (Vanilla ice cream with chocolate Oreos and vanilla Oreos mixed in)

Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
i love this!
i'm joining that group immediately!
i'm a proud bookworm & word nerd!
my mom has worked as a librarian for over 40 years!
i really hope ben & jerry's does it!
maybe they could donate some or all of the proceeds to literacy programs?
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
@london_janice: Keep your hat on! That wasn't meant as a knock on librarians. I just didn't want to keep using the word librarian—and, besides, not all the folks in that group are necessarily librarians. If anything, I think that most of the folks who write on SE consider themselves word nerds and bookworms (I know I do) and see no more derision in those words than, say, geek.
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
@ london_janice....consider it a compliment, seriously!
here's my shot at it:
Swirlculation Desk - swirls of caramel, chocolate fudge, and peanut butter in simple vanilla ice cream
Interliberry Loan - side by side strawberry and raspberry ice cream with a blueberry swirl. sounds kinda "meh", but fits the flavor title :)
Library-Inspired Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Flavors
@london_janice -- don't get your panties in a twist. It's all in good fun.
Actually "bookworm" gives me a great idea: Strawberry ice cream with gummi worms mixed in!
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shops carry fresh baked dutch crunch bread. My favorite is the one on Watt and Whitney in Sacramento. They bake it fresh all day long, and it makes the absolute best tasting sandwich I've ever had.
Another excellent place to pick up some fresh dutch crunch is the Sanitary Bakery in South San Francisco -- they have been baking it for as long as I can remember!
Thanks for the info -- can't wait to try to bake my own!
Snapshots from the UK: Purple Sprouting Broccoli
My mum loves purple broccoli. It's not bad in a stir fry with a little bit of oyster sauce.
Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's
From the horse country of Virginia I would like to add that Pimms makes the scene at many a race and polo match, as it should, of course. I love to take a couple of bottles along for a full afternoon of races, and believe me everyone who stops by leaves smiling. My recipe involves making my own sour mix of simple syrup, lemon AND lime juices, then pouring in a bit of that for each drink, add the Pimms, top with soda water, stir with the cuke. YUM.
Will be trying out adding mint and strawberries soon, sounds wonderful.
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
I used to live in Bay Area and I loved these Dutch Crunch for my sandwiches. I moved to NY and almost forgot about this Dutch Crunch but thank you for reminding me for this wonderful bread. I don't think I have seen them here but I will look for it next time when I am at a bakery. I miss Bay Area!!!
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
@mmmassey & thepirateking: dutch crunch is always available at the osborne village Safeway and at least sometimes at gunn's.
Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's
I am a true Pimm's Cup devotee. I've only seen it on offer in one Indian restaurant I frequented on a business trip in downtown San Francisco. That was thirty years ago and I have long ago forgotten the name of the restaurant but not their food or drink. I wonder if anyone knows which establishment I am talking about. Seems in was down in a basement setting...
I ramble, over the years I have maintained my love affair whenever I would find Pimm's in our local state liquor store; a rare occasion (Seattle). From my perspective, it is more refreshing and appropriate for hot summer days than a Mint Julip. Now my southern ancestors are spinning in their graves.
Serious Cocktails: Pining for Pimm's
tanaya...the state liquor store at U-Village has Pimms.
California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area
I'll be giving Peter Reinhart's Vienna Bread w/ Dutch Crunch a try.
Snapshots from the South of France: Rustic Macarons
I thought about this easy and quick recipe from Emeril, made with almond paste when I read the article. The wonderful Macarons above sound like it:
http://www.emerils.com/recipe/3050/Almond-Macaroons
A few weeks ago I made copies of a more complicated version - I hope I'll get around to it (I've got a pile of recipes and books I say this about):
Little luxuries - French macaroons
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/10/FD1I17CUG2.DTL#recipe
If anyone has recipes for cinnamon and vanilla, I'd appreciate them.
