Sicilian Slice Crawl in Boston

My only question is this: Did anyone commenting here actually grow up in Boston? There are LOTS of UNBELIEVABLE Sicilian pizza places in and around Boston (Leone's in Somerville comes to mind as one! and Santarpio's is definitely high on the list). Most of the best Sicilian pizza comes from small neighborhood pizza shops without well known names or more-importantly, without well-heeled clientele. And odds are, if it's really close to a college campus or upscale shopping destination, it's not "real" Sicilian pizza.... : )

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

My Italian ancestors would say - take the lot, toss with tomotes, onions, whatever herbs float your boat, add pasta (ok so if Russian - maybe potatoes?) and eat!

Danny DeVito's Limoncello

I hate to add this, but everyone - make your own! It's not difficult, there are lots of recipes out there depending on how you like it (more like lemonade? more like a liquor..) People even do it with other citrus... And it's great! I've made my own for years now... very nice.

Best Limoncello? Mediterraneo Cafe in Providence, RI (I'm from Boston..I'm Italian and I can vouch for this!)

What to eat 1st time in Paris

Oooh, the last comment here - and I can't resist adding to - @julie527,
Berthillon - absolutely! But don't go to the main store...go around the corner, down a side street on the Ile de la Cite where there is a window... ask for the melon ice cream. You will have died and gone to heaven.

It's Paris. Eat everything... Eat like the French. Let go of all of your inhibitions... You will be the richer for it.

Glop. That's what my husband calls it. Usually risotto based, with spinach, whatever veggies I can find and Parm Reg cheese...lots. So it's...well...gloppish. Turns out my daughter loves it too! (The boys here are carnivores... so glop is not on their menu).

I saw lots of variations of glop in the comments. The starchy/veggie/cheesy thing is the only way to go. Go Glop!

Stuffed French Toast?

Ok, I know this is a late post and technically NOT stuffed French Toast. But it IS french toast AND you can prep it the night before AND it is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

As the ad used to say "try it...you'll like it!"

The Mustards in My Fridge; Which Are in Yours?

Did anyone mention honey mustard? I like to use it when making a dressing that I want to taste a bit sweeter... and it's great in glazes as well... I don't use mustard a lot, but you'd never know it from my fridge - all the usual suspects: dijon (a couple of types), honey, whole grain and the American standard: French's yellow. (hubby's fav)... So many mustards, so little time!

Cook the Book: 'Urban Italian'

Ok...here's one I've never seen in a book: Pasta Cake. Yep...sort of. It's a cake (really it's a custard, but pathetically we always called it pastacake (as though it was all one word)). You use pasta as the flour, add egg, vanilla, cream or milk and sugar (just a little)... blend, set in a tray and bake - briefly since the pasta is already cooked. Sprinkle spices on top (nutmeg is ideal). Mangia. The ultimate use for leftover (and often soggy) pasta. (Pasta in any form being my favorite Italian dish and this version - definitely a twist!!)

Buon Appetito!

Easter 2009: What are Your Plans?

Ok, old family tradition - very Italian/American. We always have artichokes, stuffed... everyone LOVES them. Then escarole soup ('scarola for the initiated), followed by the one two punch: Italian - pasta w/tomato sauce, pork and sausage; American - ham, veggies, starch (potatoes - Dad's Irish).
Of course there's wine. Then all followed by multiple desserts - junk for the kids (store bought cupcakes) Italian cookies (biscotti and anise frosted ones and ), a cake shaped like a lamb... strawberry shortcake and lots and lots of coffee....with Anisette and Amaretto... Needless to say, a coma follows.... Ahhhhh......:)

People observing Lent--how is it going?

I'm reading these responses and laughing with that sense of the familiar... I have two kids who go to Parochial school and they've changed the way they present Lent. Families are encouraged to "give" during the Lenten season versus give up something. Let's face it, most of us use Lent to diet/dry out/etc... The whole sacrifice thing is missing.... To give definitely aligns more with the spirit of Easter....

That said, I did cut back on wine with dinner for Lent... :o Some habits die hard!

I've been to Pinocchio's many a time and agree that they make the best pie in town (Sicilian or otherwise). The spinach and (on rare occasion when they have it) zucchini white squares are simply amazing, especially when cut fresh from the oven.

I was pleased to identify the Umberto and Armando's slices just from the photos. I love both, but a fresh slice of Armando's blows Umberto off the map. And standing in line for 45 minutes will make any pizza taste better.

I'll have to try Pinocchios.

Bostone pizza is perpetually a disappointment. How I miss Newbury Pizza. The options in Back Bay are pretty slim these days, except for The Upper Crust.

@llincoln: where can such real Sicilian be found in Boston?

Could you please send me a picture of such a slice, with a picture of the top of the pizza, the bottom, a good cross section of the crust (hole structure)? It would be much appreciated for my ongoing experiments in my kitchen. Thank you!

Thanks for this round-up folks. As a recent Boston transplant I was unaware of the emphasis on square slices until this report. I had been meaning to hit Umberto but I didn't realize it was a regional slant. This is good news, given the general mediocrity of round pies in this city (a few notables excepted).

Stopped into Pinocchios this weekend and it was, indeed, quite good. Just needed a moment more in the oven. If it's inconsistent, I got it on a pretty good day.

I agree with hungrychristel. I would mix the meat with some cooked rice, shredded cheese, and hot sauce. Then stuff them into red/green bell peppers w/ the tops cut off and bake until the peppers are slightly wilted but are still tender.

From Talk

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

yeah it's been said but i would totally stuff some tomatoes/peppers, top with cheese and bake.

Dill and tomato sauce? Lemon juice? Try it the old fashioned way before you go off the reservation. Maybe go sloppy joes with the dilly stuff you made this time.
Interesting combination for meatballs. Keep trying and next time follow the recipe. This one posted by Nick came from Joy of cooking the skill level is easy. http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2009/08/meatball-sub-sandwiches-recipe.html

Roll into phyllo dough with some farmer or feta cheese for little hand held pockets of deliciousness.

Stir in some cooked and drained spinach, feta, maybe even some cooked rice and top with phyllo to make a Balkan style meat pie. Especially with the dill. Yum.

From Talk

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

Casserole with wide needles and a little sour cream
or toast/grill some crusty rolls and stuff with meat mixture.

Stuff cabbage leaves and simmer in tomato sauce.

I like the stuffed pepper idea too!

From Talk

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

I would stuff a veggie with them or throw them in a stroganoff type sauce and serve over egg noodles.

From Talk

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

Healthy: Spaghetti squash or stuffed/shredded/sliced zucchini

Not so healthy: Sloppy Joes, hot hoagies on hollowed out rolls, spaghetti bolognese, on buttered bow-tie pasta, or cold meatloaf/meatball style sandwiches

From Talk

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

I often add loose hamburg to my spaghetti sauce. Better yet, lasagna would be a perfect place to disguise that they were not originally cohesive meatballs.

From Talk

Sounds like a perfect stuffing. Use it to stuff mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, squash, onions...whatever floats your boat.

Danny DeVito's Limoncello

@llincoln, I couldn't agree more. Do you use Everclear or vodka as your base?

From Talk

Danny DeVito's Limoncello

I have made Giada's limoncello as well as her cheescake recipe using it. Instead of draining off the lemon peels, as Giada instructs in her limoncello recipe, I leave them in which keeps strenghtening the lemon flavor. Of course, keep refrigerated. As far as Danny DiVito, if anyone remembers, he was on "The View" (about a year ago?) and appeared to be slightly tipsy. He attributed it to being out with George Cloony drinking too much limoncello.

And come to think of it, this web site has a few salient points. There's not much gov't oversight in Paris kitchens, as it turns out.

'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

Before my little baby was born and my husband traveled a lot for work, I would often have scrambled eggs and some kind of whole-grain toast (or "eggs in the hole," where you cut a little circle out of the bread and fry an egg in it, yum). Or oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter in it. Or PB&J. Or a slice of veggie pizza with lots of crushed red pepper on top. Or Annie's frozen tofu lasagna. Or whatever frozen meal looked good that day from Trader Joe's. And, of course, I would have to scrounge for something sweet from my stash of baking supplies, like chocolate chips!

when the hubby goes on a fishing trip with his buddies, it's gulf shrimp with homemade alfredo and a bottle of prosecco for me. and a couple chick flicks.

From Serious Eats

At home alone - it's steamed veggies, baked potato and simple salad with tomatos and crutons.
Eatting out alone - it's my favorite greasy taco shop for 2 beef tacos sometimes 3-rolled tacos too OR it's a NewYork style pizza with sausage, onions, mushrooms, olives, fresh garlic and pineapple pieces yes pineapple. This hits the sweet, salty, spicey and sour tastes buds for me.
