Cook the Book: 'Japanese Hot Pots'

Pennsylvania Dutch chicken pot pie, made with saffron and dumplings.

Weekend Book Giveaway: 'Cake Wrecks'

Mexican spicy chocolate cookies- called for chopping up the disks of chocolate first, which is almost impossible (they are DENSE!). Because there were so many enormous lumps of diamond-hard chocolate in the dough, the refrigerated log was impossible to slice... ended up making drop cookies. And, to top it off- they just weren't that tasty anyway.

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

A children's cookbook written for girls in the 50's- printed in teal, orange, and black and white, with sketches of smiling girls in aprons making snazzy canned tomato soup recipes. I wish I still had it!

Most frequently used: definitely garlic, even if it's just a little bit. I love to cook dishes from various cultures and garlic is often the common thread.

Always goes bad before I use it all: Spices that you just need for one recipe. By the time I get to use the rest of the bottle, they'll be stale and I'll want to buy a fresh batch. Examples include almost any Indian spice- I love them, but just don't need that much!

Mastering Knife Skills: Can a Book Make the Cut?

I just purchased "Knife Skills Illustrated" by Peter Hertzmann. I am a culinary student and I wanted a guide that I could refer to at home. So far it's been worth the price (under $20 on Amazon right now) for its illustrations on how to chop an onion. It's amazing how many things I was doing wrong. Practice is definitely key, but it is invaluable to me to have something to refer to.

I don't bake, baking scares me. One time in high school I decided to overcome this fear and suprise my mother with a pan of brownies. I hate nuts in my desserts, but she loves them so I figured I'd take one for the team and throw in the bag of walnut pieces I found in the back of the pantry. Well, she takes one bite and makes this face because apparently the nuts were rotten and the whole pan of brownies was ruined. I still don't trust nuts in baked goods and haven't thought twice about baking something since then.

Currently I crave the Thai Suki after reading all this. I'm sad that I never see it in the states. My fav place in Thailand is MK restaurants. Super cold restaurant, super hot soup!

homemade soups, starting with meat bones and ending with seasonal vegetables....the best! takes hours to simmer on the stove...but the end results are used in so many meals...the simplest being laddled into a big bowl and with a crusty bread on the side.

My most recent baking mistake: Making oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and forgetting the oatmeal. It took an embarrassingly long time to figure out what was missing!
Not baking, per say, but the olive oil story reminded me of a time when I tried to make Annie's mac and cheese without butter. I substituted EVOO instead thinking it would taste the same (stupid). It was hands down the most disgusting pasta I've ever had.

My favorite meal worthy soup would be homemade bean soup with ham and bacon in it. I make it with a ham bone and let it simmer for about 3 hours. Very tasty and filling. I also like my mom's homemade vegetable soup with fresh veggies from the garden! Mmm good!

Cakes and dogs--never a good combination. How many of us have left the celebratory creation just a tad too close to the edge of the counter, only to come home from the big meal out, mouths set for sugar, to discover that fido has once again proven his real reason for being, i.e., to grab all the available food whenever you're not looking?

My Momma liked to make big ol pots of soups and stews. All us kids and our kids would come over and eat. Sometimes she'd be creative and add different things. My Daddy would smell it and come in and ask what she was cooking. She would tell him she was making "stuff". It was funny. She was a great cook.
