The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
You all have made me laugh so hard!!! Don't you just loooovvveee being naughty?!
If you have not yet looked at Why You Are Fat - Where Dreams Become Heart Attacks (thanks to avaryne), you MUST. What goes on in the mind of someone who would even dream up a burger with peanut butter AND mayonaise?!
Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?
It's just not like it was in the olden days of yore when Halloween treats were never, ever suspect. Sadly, very sadly, the world has changed.
I would be wary of anything homemade. I say that sadly and reluctantly. I would really, really have to know you really, really well to feel comfortable with letting my kids eat your homemade treats.
With all of that negative crap being said ... If these are the children of families that your parents know well, it shouldn't be a problem.

Is the Food Network getting too flashy?
I don't think that FN has become too "flashy" per se, because most of it is soooo boring. When I first started watching, it was for the educational value of the programming. There are so many hosts who were talented at teaching (which I believe is its own art form) who seem to have disappeared.
I, too, have started watching the PBS shows. Jaques and Julia are talented teachers with passion about what they do! That's what counts most to me.

Edible Gifts for the Holidays
OOOHHHH! You all have some great ideas about oils and vinegars and herbs and jams and jellies and dog treats!
I usually bake like a manic. Last year for the people I work with, for Christmas, I found some really neat ceramic coffee cups. I baked gingerbread in the cups, thus making "cup cakes". I brought along some freshly made whipped cream and forks. Everyone really liked it.
What fun things can I bake in this year? Hmmmm ...
Moldy Spoon Revisited. (Now with more EW!)
Fortunately, I have a trustworthy, honest plumber. I'd be calling him because I'd be waaaaayy too scared to be dealing with any kind of mold or other ew!!
Good luck with solving this problem. Let us know what happens.
Soft-Boiled Eggs-Your eating style
I have never been able to cook a decent soft-boiled egg! That being said, I often make poached eggs with great success. I must have some weird subconscious thing about the egg shell? When I can see the egg, I know what I'll be getting, thereby having more control? That's just crazy talk! I just love eggs ...
I enjoy my poached eggs soft and runny on top of buttered whole wheat toast with salt and lots of pepper. Mmmmmmmmmm......!
Serious Eats Neighborhoodies shirts
I'd love to have one of these shirts, and I would wear it with pride; however, when I go to "Shop", there is no clothing to order - that I could find anyway.
Recipe for limoncello?
Or, better yet, you could just go to southern Italy and get the best limoncello on the planet!! Really, nothing compares to it!
Herbs for winter blues?
I have used essiential oils from a company called Young Living Oils. I am only a consumer of their products. I do not have any financial interest in the company. I have used their oils for many years, and I have been very satisfied with the results. I had a friend who did work for the company. She passed along a huge book of information as a reference I could easily use. I looked up "depression", and here's what it said:
"Depression can be caused by a calcium deficiency. Stay away from carbonated water; it takes calcium out of the body, blocks potassium, prevents protien from absorbing, and causes hormone deficiency. When we eat heavy protein at night and do not digest our food during the night, the food ferments and takes oxygen out of our system."
The oils recommended to use are: bergamot, chamomile (Roman), clary sage, frankincense, geranium, patchouly, rosewood, sage, sandalwood, tangerine, ylang ylang.
They also recommend their blends: "Peace & Calming", "Harmony", "Hope", "Gentle Baby", "Release"
Oils can be used topically or infused into the air. There is a guide for how to use the oils. Because I don't want to appear to selling you something, I'd suggest you contact the company online on your own. You can also do your own online research about the medicinal properties of herbs and essential oils. Just be careful that the source of the information is reputable.
I agree with lemonfair, vitamin D is a biggie, as is fish oil.
Best of luck on your quest!
Will N1H1 flu scare change your dining out habits?
It won't change my dining out experiences. Because of the medications I take for rheumatoid arthritis, I have lived with a weakened/suppressed immune system for many years. I get my flu shot every year, and this year I hope to get an additional H1N1 immunization. I take the usual precautions, like frequent hand washing, coughing into my arm or a tissue. I work to stay as healthy as I can.
HOWEVER .... Don't think for a minute that there are people who will miss work because they are sick. Case in point: I worked with a woman who had constant colds and even bronchitis. She was too busy to go to the doctor, and thought she was too important to miss work to stay home and recuperate (with paid sick leave and good insurance!)
I think we need to be mindful of our surroundings and take care of ourselves. I can't control what another person chooses to do, but I won't change going out for good food!
I'm with shoneyjoe ... More reservations for me!!
Served: Street Food, Chocolate Cake, and Home
Don't tell me about parsnip cookies and chocolate cake in a way that makes we want to drool - and not share the recipes!!!!???
Please, please share!
drawing the line on my bacon love
OMG!!!! I, too, just threw up in my mouth a little! A line has truly been crossed somehow! I can't tell what the language is. I'm just guessing that this a German product? Those kooky Europeans ...
New home, new kitchen = where to begin
When I downsized into my smaller home after I retired, I was able to treat myself. The first thing I did was to have rolling shelves installed in all my lower kitchen cabinets and my pantry and my bathroom cabinets. Part of my reason for this was because I have rheumatoid arthritis. Digging things out of cabinets is pretty difficult for me. I cannot begin to tell how happy I am with this arrangement! Rearranging and reorgnizing have been so easy! There is nothing that ever gets "lost" in the back of a cabinet. After 3 1/2 years, the kitchen is still a work in progress, as I imagine it should be. I delete things and add things, and it's no biggie.
Best of luck on your new endeavor! Oh yeah, and don't sweat it. Enjoy!!
Vegas ... for my mom
Try the coffee shop at any hotel. You will be surprised at the selection. You can get breakfast, lunch, dinner or munchies 24 hours a day. My favorite is the Bellagio for two reasons. First the food is very good. Second, you can get a table looking out into the conservatory which is always gorgeous, not to mention a great people-watching spot!
Hell's Kitchen Food Festival
Duh ... I feel really silly! When I first read the title, I thought it referred to the TV show Hell's Kitchen! I assume that this will be taking place in New York? ... I really feel like a big dork!
It Doesn't Taste Like Mom's
Her meatloaf was wonderful, as well as her potato salad.
She used to make a dish she called Gordito. It was kind of like a Mexican lasagne. D-darn-liscious!
French (or 7th grade Home Ec.) Breakfast Puffs
JerzeeTomato - We must have attended the same school? or at least the same kind of school? I went to a parochial high school in Las Vegas. I envied my friends in public school because they could take classes like "home ec" and got to cook cool stuff.
Urgent LA dispatch - ramps!
Ooh! Ramps are also used for skateboarding and other X-Games stuff, too!
Urgent LA dispatch - ramps!
I hesitate to show my ignorance ... but what the heck are ramps?!
The only ramps I know get me onto as well as off an interstate freeway ...
Thanks in advance for not pointing out again that I don't always know what I'm talking about!
Dinner Impossible
I was curious about the change with Dinner Impossible - bringing back Robert Irvine. So I googled Michael Symon and found an interview with Chef Symon from the Cleveland paper regarding his no longer being with the show.
In that article, Chef Symon says that he knew that he would never be permanent, and that FN was "working things out" with Chef Irvine. He said that he enjoyed doing the show, but that it was Robert's all along.
In the interview, Chef Symon really took the high road. He was really complimentary regarding the way he has been treated by FN, as well as how FN was willing to work with Chef Irvine.
PS - I enjoyed the Michael Symon episodes. He's like a big kid who can also cook!
Served: Restaurant Job Search
First ...I really enjoy your blog!
A really, really, really long time ago as a new graduate, I landed a job that I loved. I waited for five years before I went to graduate school in a field that is different from, yet similar to, what I was doing. By doing that, many more doors were opened to me. I am so glad that I took the time away from being a student to mature. I made better decisions for myself.
By the way, until I finished grad school, I always worked a second job as a food server!
Recommendations: Where Should I Eat, Snack, Munch, and Drink in Las Vegas?
I must be getting older than I realize ... I just remembered one more ...
Picasso's in the Bellagio. A few years ago, I was supposed to go for my birthday, but I got really sick days before. It just hasn't come up again (darn it).
How many chances will you have to sit and have a wonderful meal surrounded by priceless art?
I imagine that you can find their menu online (along with Hugo's Cellar (see above)).
Recommendations: Where Should I Eat, Snack, Munch, and Drink in Las Vegas?
Ooohhh ... I just remembered! For a real Vegas-y experience ...
The Four Queens Hotel in downtown Las Vegas has a restaurant called Hugo's Cellar. (It's not too far by cab.) The food and service are wonderful. The menu includes tableside Caesar salad, steaks, chops, duck ... well, American cuisine.
They also have a fairly extensive wine list. The concierge at your hotel can make reservations for you.
As long as you are downtown, stay for the Fremont Street Experience. There is a huge canopy over what used to be Fremont Street. At intervals, the canopy lights up, and gives a great show! Vegas-y and cheesy all in one, and it's free. This will also give you the opportunity to shop for Las Vegas mementos as there are many souvenir shops and kiosks right there.
I have lived in Las Vegas most of my life, and that is where I have taken visiting friends for a night out. No complaints yet!
Recommendations: Where Should I Eat, Snack, Munch, and Drink in Las Vegas?
Cassaendra: Is Quark's Bar still open? - or did it go when the Star Trek Experience closed in September, 2008?
Bethae : How long will you be in Las Vegas? Will you have a car? Are you the adventurous type? There are so many great locally owned restaurants all over town...
Yes, the Bellagio buffet is good, but so is the buffet at the Rio. Most of the big hotels do a good job, and going for Sunday brunch is best. The cheap all-you-can-eat buffets of olden times have mostly gone away.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
French toast made from doughnuts, filled with ice cream and gingered mangos and topped with hot caramel sauce. Since I do not foresee making this again (blessedly my beau does not have a sweet tooth), no regrets for this one-time splurge.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
A sauce made with sliced breakfast sausages, cream of chicken soup, Hellman's mayonnaise, lemon juice, ground pepper, broccoli, shredded aged cheddar on top and served over pasta or rice. The sauce smells vile but it actually tastes delicious and I would even go so far as call it comfort food. I often find myself craving this sauce during winter.
Tipping
The rule of thumb has always been to tip on the pre-tax amount of the check, although I personally always go higher...the tax on the bill is not the customers fault or obligation.
It becomes a bit more complicated if you include a bottle of wine which can increase your tab dramatically.
Tipping
When in doubt err on the side of generosity. Give the server the extra dollar. They will be much happier to see you next time.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
Just had this one, recipe follows for all of you seriously in need of upping your cholesterol levels:
Boil or bake a potato and keep hot. Soft boil an egg: The white should just be set and the yolk still runny. Cut a cross in the potato and squeeze to expose inside and create a hollow. Add salt and a generous dollop of butter. Slice the top off the egg and dribble/scoop the yolk into the potato. Top with grated Tusser's or Cheddar cheese and shredded pepper ham. Pig out.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
fried hot dog - melt butter in frying pan, fry a split oscar meyer 100% beef frank until golden brown and crispy. Melt American cheese slice on top. For added goodness, butter and broil hot dog bun in oven. Place hot dog in bun and add your usual toppings. Also, makes me think of similar fried bologna sandwiches. Man, I love processed meat!
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
in compliance with my low-carb diet...
low carb "nachos"
layer deep fried pork rinds in a pan,* sprinkle on some hot sauce, then smother with an assortment of sliced cheeses (pre-shredded will not do!)
place in broiler until cheese is bubbly.
*best when using the ultra large pork rinds found in Mexican groceries
eat immediately. keep a cell phone within reach to dial 911!
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
It has to be the casseroles I make once or twice a year....hashbrown casserole (hashbrowns, butter, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, onions and cheese) or chicken casserole (cooked, shredded chicken breasts, cream of chicken soup, ro-tel and crushed doritos...all mixed together and then topped with cheese and baked).
Dessert-wise: Chocolate Guinness Stout Cake...It has 4 sticks of butter in just the cake, that's not even counting the Italian Meringue Buttercream frosting...that has 5 sticks of butter!!
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
@butterfingers -
oh
my
gosh.
my sister used to eat that!
you two are two in a million i would assume LOL
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
Once I made a shortbread recipe that called for 2 sticks of butter...... for 9 cookies.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
@betteirene -- I'm afraid that regional American cooking is going to disappear. Between chain restaurants, cookbooks and magazines, eating and cooking is getting much more homogenized.
I'm a fan of sugar cream pie, I just don't eat it daily -- or even monthly. I had the butter and sugar sandwiches when I was a youngster -- also peanut butter and brown sugar. I'm not sure that a butter/sugar sandwich is any worse than grilled cheese made with processed cheese food.
There's also some evidence that by adding the bacon or bacon grease to greens, for instance, you make them taste better and people eat more of the greens. The fat makes some of the nutrients in the greens more accessible.
@MarvinDog -- I think the French might be surprised to find out that duck confit is unhealthy.
@tacoo -- It's all about moderation. Unfortunately, over the last 30 years or so we've been taught that if a lot of something is bad, then none is best.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
@freakyhair...Word. Love that recipe but holy cow!! The butter content rivals Paula Deen's toxic concoctions. Luckily it's a huge batch.
Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?
Regarding KarynMC:
You can NEVER say that only a family member would try to poison a child. Get real, there are sick people out there who get off on doing their dirty deed.
Also, please let me know where those chocolate chip cookies are being handed out so that I'll miss that house. :)
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
It's a tossup among three for me:
As a child I LOVED white bread and mayonnaise sandwiches with my Pepsi... luckily, Grandma wouldn't let me have them - I had to sneak them. ~Shudder~
With holidays/Winter approaching, time to break out the fudge, too. My fave is basically sweetened condensed milk and choccolate chips. Mmmm, sugar, fat and chocolate - what's not to love?
And, I hate to admit that lately I've had a hankering for college food, specifically Chili Casserole: Canned chili (my favorite rhymes with 'Shtennison's Not') layered with oodles of cheddar cheese and corn tortillas and baked. Doesn't seem that bad until you read the ingredients on the can (what IS 'textured protein'?!) and realise the cheese is basically about a pound of hydrolised fat... The only healthy thing in it is the 6 corn tortillas.
But then, nowadays opening a can of anything but organic tomatoes feels sinful, so who am I to judge?
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
Cinnabon clone buns. so....much...butter....
http://www.thecookingphotographer.com/2009/07/clone-wars-er-i-mean-cinnabon-clones.html
They were good, but not good enough to eat all that butter. I had 1, and gave the rest away.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
A black olive sandwich!
A can of chopped black olives mixed with far too much mayo spread on 2 pieces of white bread slathered with too much mayo, for the ultimate olive/mayo sandwich with a large spoonful of mayo au naturale as the appetizer before the sandwich. The first 3/4 was great and by the end my hunger for it was fullfilled. Not to be eatten again for at least a month or twenty-two.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
I made a bread pudding out of chocolate/orange quick bread and then covered the whole thing with caramel sauce.
Soooo....bread that consisted mostly of chocolate, sugar, processed flour and orange juice baked in a bed of eggy custard slathered with homemade caramel.
Ruined by health concerns? Hardly! I had some, and so did my guests, and we all enjoyed the heck out of it. Would I do it again? Maybe in another year or two. After all, it was amazingly delicious.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
@BobbieAnne I make that with matzoh for Passover every year. I got the recipe from Gourmet - it's called Caramel Matzoh Crunch, and peopel just devour it.
The 'most unhealthy' thing I have made recently was a jelly doughnut bread pudding from the New York Times - 14 jelly doughnuts, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, and it disappeared in seconds.
I also make brownies that have granulated sugar, brown sugar and Karo syrup, 6 oz. chocolate, 1/2 # butter and 7 eggs in each batch.
@IndyGal I agree - I don't make this stuff for myself, but I bring it to parties and events where there will be lots of people. So you eat 1 or 2 pieces, once in a while, no problem.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
I noticed the hillbilly theme we got going here and it reminded me of a trip we took from Chicago to visit the kin in Gilbert, W.Va. Instead of following the usual interstates through IN and OH and eating at Shoney's, we took a scenic route over three days and made a pit stop at a Cracker Barrel in TN one day and went to the Loveless Cafe for dinner.
One Sunday after we got back home, I tried to duplicate Cracker Barrel's breakfast menu. I made biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, eggs, grits, fried potatoes (instead of hash brown casserole) and fried apples. Every now and then, we'll get a hankerin' for a meal like this, but it's such a pain to get the timing right that I won't do it unless I've got help. It's disgustingly unhealthy, but man, once in a while we just gotta have it.
Don't you just adore regional American cooking? I just love it when a recipe starts with a stick of butter, or when you take something perfectly healthy, like green beans or spinach, and doctor it up with a a pound of bacon and a couple of spoons full of bacon grease.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
Grilled fresh foie gras (with diced mango, port soaked prunes and sherry wine vinegar) over brioche toasts, with duck fat fried potatoes [and green beans to assuage the guilt some]. Quite delicious.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
I've made many things that weren't healthy at all - from real mac & cheese with 6 kinds of cheese to Guy Fieri's Mac & Cheese that is topped with bacon, and the Sweet Potato Gooey Butter Cake from Paula Deen. I think the thing that was the worst was the Toasted Ravioli which is deep fried ravioli. I've made all kinds of deep fried things. It may be bad for you but it tastes soooo good.
I've eaten worse though - Deep Fried Oreos, Deep Fried Macaroni & Cheese (both at different fairs), Deep Fried Mars Bars, Deep Fried Twinkies - but i've never made any of them. I'd rather eat stuff like that out of the house. If I deep fry in the house, it smells like it for days after.
My favorite thing to make at home (But only for holidays) is Potato Latkes. They are sooo fattening but so good. Also, 3x a year I make my own chopped chicken livers for Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Chanukah. Ground up chicken livers with chicken fat - can't get much worse for you.
Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?
Of course you can go back to the houses that give good candy, but always remember to go back at the end of the night to the houses that didn't get a lot of visitors. Why? They'll have left over candy, and they'll be willing to get rid of it.
Only give pre-packaged candy to trick or treaters. You can make special packs of home-baked goods for those you know well, but most parents will not allow their children to eat homemade goods. Them's just the breaks.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
King Ranch chicken casserole, followed by tater tot casserole (traditional recipe) and then by Paula Deen's tomato pie (third in line because it actually has tomatoes in it, as well as two cups of cheese and a cup of mayo, plus whatever goes into the crust). All so good, yet so bad that they only are allowed to be cooked once a year in my house.
The Most Unhealthy Thing You've Ever Made
Marvin Dog...the waffle dish sounds like a close cousin to my "Hillbilly Special." Look about 6 comments above yours!
