How to celebrate July 4th abroad?

Way to go, @shoneyjoe!!
Several years ago, I was in Rome on the 4th with my mother,my sister, and a couple of my sister's friends. The friends wanted to know where we would be celebrating the holiday. When I explained that the 4th of July was not celebrated in Italy, they were stunned. And we Americans wonder why we are not always so popular overseas ...
@Kitchenista - Your experience in Ireland sounds pretty cool!

Twistie - "Part of the FUN of living with diabetes"???!!! You must be living on a different planet than I. Diabetes is challenging on many levels. There is satisfaction from learning how to incorporate new foods and cooking methods. However, dealing with the daily challenges of living with a possibly debilitating and deadly disease is hardly what I would refer to as "fun".
wbairdo - There are many great resources for diabetics. CalorieCount.com is a site with good nutritional information. The cookbook "Eat What You Love" by Marlene Koch (Amazon or QVC) has been another good resource. Also, tweaking your own recipes can be very rewarding. I was fortunate in that my insurance paid 100% for a diabetes education program which included classes and one-on-one meetings with a diabetic certified nutritionist. By reviewing my food diary with her from time to time, I am continuing to learn and add new foods and cooking ideas. Just keep looking and asking questions!

I totally agree with @MBE ... It's not the end of the world if you don't succeed the first time out of the gate. Get over the fear by jumping into the pool - or the oven, or the stove!

Feeling Awkward and Insensitive.

WOW!! Could your aunt be any more manipulative and controlling??!!! Having been a very grateful part of the "other" program (Alanon) for about 25 years, I have learned not to accommodate being manipulated or controlled in a kind and loving way. Sobriety means more than just removing the alcohol. It means learning to live in the real world. For me, it's about learning to live with alcoholics in the real world.
AA exists all over the world - including Italy. Your aunt might benefit by meeting people who understand how she feels. These folks can also share their own "experience, strength, and hope" with her.
Since I feel there may be criticism on the way, let me say that until you have walked in my shoes ...

Help from diabetics, newbie getting overwhelmed by diet/info

Yes ... Learning to live with diabetes can be a bit overwhelming at first, but your mom, with your help, can easily live with it.
I attended an excellent 2 day program. Day 1 dealt with the causes and effects of diabetes. THAT was when I was truly overwhelmed! Thank goodness for day 2 which dealt with nutrition and exercise!! I decided that
I would concentrate my efforts on nutrition and exercise, as well as taking my oral meds as prescribed and testing my blood sugar 2-3 times per day. I eat between 45 and 60 carbs per meal. I also kept a food diary for the first few months. I have lost 65 pounds, and my "numbers" are normal!
That being said, it can be boring. I found a wonderful cookbook - "Eat What You Love" by Marlene Koch - which is available at Amazon.com or QVC. In addition to good low carb/low fat recipes, it also lists nutritional information for each dish.
Becoming an avid label reader will help a lot. Most important of all, don't ever be afraid to ask questions!
Best of luck!!

Would you like an OP "Update" section on former Talk threads?

What does OP mean? I'm one of those "old fashioned" people who prefer to see the actual words. I can figure out many abbreviated terms, but I haven't with this one.
Thanks in advance for your help and keeping chuckles to yourselves.

Preggo control freak seeks TG menu advice...

On a different note, I also agree with Jerzee Tomato regarding the fact that a little human kindness goes a long way here. I have always felt "safe" to ask questions and post responses. As a result, I have learned so much.

If mean, sarcastic, nasty, picky, judgemental and ugly appeal to you, there are plenty of sites out there where you will fit in quite comfortably.

wascliche ... I completely agree with Jerzee Tomato. I, too, would also wait to finalize menu plans.
Congratulations on the new addition to your family! I truly admire your energy.

Cakespy: Pumpkin Cake in a Jar

This reminds me of something I did a couple of years ago during the holidays for my coworkers. I purchased some inexpensive Christmas/holiday themed coffee cups, and in them, I baked gingerbread (which did require a couple of tries to get it right). On the day I brought them into the office, I also brought freshly whipped cream and put that into the refridgerator in the break room. Everyone really enjoyed their "cup" cakes! Each person had their cake - and a cute cup, too!!

Onion chopper recommendations?

One can purchase pre-chopped onions at the supermarket. I'm just sayin ...
I saw a "tip" on FN where Alton Brown suggested chopping onions near a flame (by turning on a burner in your stove). This apparently helps to neutralize the chemical reaction.

Is the Food Network getting too flashy?

I don't think that FN has become too "flashy" per se, because most of it is soooo boring. When I first started watching, it was for the educational value of the programming. There are so many hosts who were talented at teaching (which I believe is its own art form) who seem to have disappeared.
I, too, have started watching the PBS shows. Jaques and Julia are talented teachers with passion about what they do! That's what counts most to me.

Stupid to Make Homemade Halloween Treats?

It's just not like it was in the olden days of yore when Halloween treats were never, ever suspect. Sadly, very sadly, the world has changed.
I would be wary of anything homemade. I say that sadly and reluctantly. I would really, really have to know you really, really well to feel comfortable with letting my kids eat your homemade treats.
With all of that negative crap being said ... If these are the children of families that your parents know well, it shouldn't be a problem.
