@ joanmc, teachertalk, & gretagrace: It's actually a regional variation (read the wikipedia entry for the full history). Having lived in both the PNW and the Midwest, I can attest there are separate package styles for each region. PNW gets the traditional Frederick & Nelson hexagonal packaging (and always has), Midwest gets the Marshall Field traditional flat box (and always has).
I love Frangos. Always get a box in my Christmas stocking.
