A diet of fondue makes me blue;
I'm desperate to chew something new.
And thus I submit

To bypass the queue for my 'que!

Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
Crackblind - you're correct. No shakes in the B-line; only custards and the liquidest beverages (beers, sodas).
Funny story about my last visit to Shake Shack: Having just completed teh Corporate Challenge, my boyfriend and I confirmed on the iPhone that Shake Shack is open for dinner. We got in a cab (the prospect of walking from 57th was just too much after a 3.5-mile run and 20 block walk) and asked for Madison Square Park. The driver's response: "There's no such thing as Madison Square Park." Then what's that green square on the map in your cab? That one, right there, labeled "Madison Square Park." Happily, we ended up at the Shack and with our delicious, delicious burgers.

What's Your Favorite Thanksgiving Food?
Pie. No question.
What are your top 3 culinary flops?
Profiteroles that never really puffed like it should and stayed mushy on the inside.
Burning rice because I forgot to turn down the range after boiling the water. A "D'oh!" moment for sure.
Overmelting baker's chocolate on a makeshift double boiler. It turned into ... I don't even know how to describe it. An ugly, rough, separated goop. Unappetizing and utterly unusable.
Where to eat in San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas?
I should add that I live in New York and probably won't want to go to any sushi or Italian or similar restaurants. I'm seeking a real Southwest / Tex-Mex / American culinary experience, so hopefully your suggestions will help me experience the breadth and quality that I know Texas has to offer!
Where to eat in Dallas, Texas?
CiCi's Pizza: All you can eat for only $3.99!
- Unless they raised their prices since I was last there.
- Also, that works a lot better when sung with the jingle.
- Also, not seriously.
Cook the Book: 'Pure Dessert'
No question, Paula Deen's "Is It Really Better Than Sex?" cake. From bottom to top: yellow cake (from a box), pineapple sauce, French vanilla pudding, whipped cream, and toasted coconut shavings. I love making whipped cream and eating the leftover coconut shavings, and everyone (except for my boyfriend, who's allergic to pineapple) loves the cake!
Morimoto's Cookbook Can Be Yours This Weekend
Chen Kenichi, he was the funniest one in interviews. Iron Chef America blows compared to the original.

That made me so hungry.

Tap that Glass
I'm going to out Megu: The waiter asked us, "Sparkling or flat?" I thought flat meant tap. He brought us flat in a bottle with one of those hinged stoppers so we were fully convinced that it is just the restaurant's way of presenting tap. Fully convinced, until I saw the Megu brand spring water label on the bottle.
I thought I was just being ignorant and felt too embarrassed to point out the misunderstanding. (Of course, we had already been waiting for half an hour to be seated for our reservation, and a couple who arrived five minutes after us for a reservation at the same time had been seated 10 minutes before we were. I already had the feeling that the restaurant was out to get us.)
The Serious Eats Sushi Roll
Morimoto NYC is delicious. But I'm biased because when I went, Masaharu Morimoto was actually there, greeting diners. My boyfriend swears that he saw MM prep his dinner.

Collard greens. I never had them when I was growing up in Texas. My economics teacher in high school talked about them endlessly. When I moved to New York, I finally had collard greens at a barbeque joint. The meat was disappointing, but the collard greens were delicious! I'll have to try them when I visit Texas again.
Childhood, Part II. What did you hate then that you love now?
I hated mushrooms too, but now I find them wonderful, especially enoki.
I used to hate broccoli (and loved cauliflower for whatever reason), but now I'll eat them if adequately seasoned.
Used to hate all cheeses, but now I like most white cheeses.
Every six months or so I find my taste about one or two things has drastically changed. I hope it means my tastes are maturing, rather than my tastebuds dying.
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
Forgot to mention that 5 Guys is pretty good, in my opinion. It is a welcome sight after a long, long flight home into Reagan National. I still prefer the Apple Pan, though.
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
I lived for 31 years in LA and moved away 18 years ago...I cannot imagine going to LA for a visit without stopping at Tito's Tacos, the Apple Pan or Brent's Deli in the Valley. The Apple Pan hasn't changed a whit or lowered its standards for the quality of its food or service since my first Hickory Burger in 1966...Quality Forever, baby!
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
@ Growler: Everyone has their own opinions of course, but I think you'll find the majority of burger foodies in this town disagree with you.
My perfect SS visit is the double shack, a chicago dog, a shake of some sort, and a couple bites of my wife's portobello burger. Hehe.
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
Sorry, Shake Shack is okay, but seriously overrated. Don't believe the hype!
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
Uglycuss...aw, gee. I used to love Hardee's. Thanks for the info. :-(
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
What makes the shack burgers work so well-- especially compared with an inferior burger of a similar style like Five Guys*-- is the balance between the beef, bun and condiments. The leaf lettuce and tomato used in the Shack Burger are just the right amount. Five Guys' iceberg lettuce doesn't add the same flavor. And the potato bun at the Shack ties it all together. The Five Guys bun is too thick-- it overwhelms the burger. And the brisket/sirloin blend in the Shack's patties gives it a more interesting and complex flavor.
I hope that Shake Shack uptown will have the same balance of burgers without the insane line in the park. This classic post from AHT remains my guideline for when to wait on line and when not to bother.
*Not to say that Five Guys is bad-- I enjoy their burgers and they have great fries, but their burgers don't have the same balance that the Shack's exhibit.
Shake Shack: A New York Spin on the West Coast–Style Burger
You'd think a fine publication like this would know that, alas, you cannot get a shake from the B line.
Good rule of thumb for the line, is that if it passes the concrete walkway into the park from Madison, it is too long for a mere mortal to wait on. And the perfect meal is one shack burger and one vanilla shake.

Texas, Carolina, New York,
Give us brisket and sausage, pulled pork,
We keep calling “More meat!”
Smoky, savory and sweet
Like a jewel on the end of your spork.

Pulled pork, beef brisket, jalapeno slaw, rib rack….
I’m so excited for such a delightful snack!
But with the lines growing ever-fast
My appetite won’t long last
Please don’t make me get my meat fix at Shake Shack.

Who spent his long nights hard at work
While prepping his pig
He lamented the gig
And cried, "will no sweet lass pull my pork?"

With a jaunty blue ribbon on his lapel
Some folks called him a winner
Then invited him to dinner
And now all that's left is the scrapple.

For whom "Meat = Murder" was gospel
But her conviction died

Sure, there's nothing I won't do for great 'cue
For brisket cooked all night
A sauce with bite
Heck, would you like a kidney or two?

My attempt at this limerick may be hokey
I'd do anything to get pork that's smokey
'Que sauce that's sublime
Although dry rub is fine
So send me that pass, okie dokie?
