What do you order when you go to the cheap Chinese takeout?
half chicken with pork fried rice, and a quart of hot and sour soup.

The only Japanese restaurant in Northern Jersey I've eaten at is Minado and from what I hear they are sprouting up all over. Yea, it's a buffet, yea it's a chain... but I walk out of there quite the satisfied customer.
Now if you don't care about ambiance and just want to satisfy your sushi cravings, hit up the Mitsuwa grocery store/shopping plaza in Edgewater (River Rd, next to the driving range). Avoid around noon on the weekends- you'll find it hard to find parking, and a place to eat inside.
Mitsuwa is a great place, but the only thing I don't like about it is that it closes at 7PM. That pretty much reduces it to lunches on weekends for me.

I've always thought the actual sushi at Mitsuwa was pretty average, and that they excelled at things like ramens and bento box lunches. However, once a year they do the Tuna Cut, which allows you to get top notch sashimi grade tuna cut off a whole fish:

I also vote for Mitsua in Edgewater. They not only have sushi, but also a full size japanese grocery store with all kinds of awesome, rare, and interesting treats.
It is the perfect place to take people who don't like suhi because it is also the best food I know of. They have lots of places making ice cream, cream puffs or red bean paste pastries, tea, katsu-fried things, dumplings, hambuger patties with your choice of topping, bubble tea. It is a smorgesboard.
Also it is relatively inexpensive.
Confirmed, Sakura Bana is back!

The hallmark of any chinese take out are these. If they don't have any of these items, look elsewhere.
(1) Beef chow fun, dry style, with little oil -- gwon chow gnow haw
(2) Tomatoe beef chow mein, crispy noodle, hong kong style -- fon ke gnow chow mein, hong kong chow.
If they barbeque their own meats on the premises (3) anything that looks good over rice is good.
For comfort food, try (4) pig nuckle noodle soup -- gee siew mein tong.
Black Bean Chicken, Garlic Chicken and Mongolian Beef
Those places look excellent as well. I'm definitely going to check them out.
Ok.
The best sushi place is currently closed until April, because they are moving to the space next door:

So until April, I would go here:

Zen, in Livingston is also pretty good:
I have eaten sushi at Nori many times when I lived in Caldwell. Their food is always tasty and the owners are so friendly. I would say their rolls are more of fusion dishes (I remember having rolls with mango and other not-so-usual roll ingredients) with tasty, interesting sauces on them. If someone is looking for a traditional sushi place, I wouldn't recommend this place though.
I'm going to defer to my friend Andy Clurfeld, the restaurant critic and food editor of the Asbury Park Press. I'll see what she has to say and report back to you.
