Café China: More Exciting Sichuan Comes to New York

Just had lunch here recently - I agree, it was very good. Interesting menu makes it fun, but the basics were delicious too. The sweet potato cake dim-sum is heaven in a crispy pocket.

Gluten-Free Tuesday: Dairy-Free, Egg-Free Coconut-Pumpkin Pie

Has anyone actually made this pie? I have been trying to find an egg-free alternative to pumpkin pie for a long time. I made this and brought it to a Friendsgiving party. Worst dessert there - no one liked it. Went in the trash today. Goopy wierd consistency, and uncooked pumpkin filling is not the best thing in the world.

Girl Scout cookies

Last year the cookies were delivered in March. They were selling them at the girl scout office at 43 West 23rd Street in Manhattan during certain hours of the day. If you look at their website in March they should have a link on the page about where to go and what hours. Or you could try downloading the "cookie finder" app for your phone http://www.girlscoutsnyc.com/Common/CookiesLocator.html

Where to eat in London while on a Business Trip?

If you need an impressive place to bring clients, try Zaika in Kensington (just a couple of tube stops from Soho area - the tube is super easy to figure out and the best way to get around). Zaika is a very high-end creative Indian restaurant. http://www.zaika-restaurant.co.uk/default.php

Look up Maroush too, it's a very popular Lebanese chain over there. http://www.maroush.com/pages/home.htm

Stop into a pub for lunch or after work, it's the place to be and meet people - seems like there's one on every corner.

I have heard that Borough Market is the best now - Spitalfields was very cool years ago, but now it's a little sell-out. But it is still cool to check out, and indoors - and you can walk over to Brick Lane and explore that too for food and markets. Spitalfields is close to Liverpool St station - and there are some great after-work pubs in that area, as well.

There's lots to see and enjoy in London, have fun!

Kid Friendly Cuban food

I agree with KarmaFreeCooking on the guava paste & cream cheese. Look in the Goya section of the grocery and you can find the wide shallow tin of guava paste and the big bag of flat Goya crackers. Spread on the cream cheese and top with a slice of paste.

I also agree with gbania - platanos maduros are great! But you have to make sure the plantains are super ripe with very brown skin.

Grown-Up Ramen Noodles?

Add the flavor packet to the broth (or a packet of chicken or beef bouillon) and then add a little garlic-chili paste (comes in a small jar in the Thai section of grocery), a tiny dash of sesame oil, soy sauce and a few squeezes of lime or lemon juice. Add chopped fresh tomatoes, shelled edamame and sesame seeds.

I do it all the time for a quick lunch - http://twitpic.com/3jyddk

Vegan/Vegetarian-friendly food in DUMBO?

RICE is great, it's right in the middle of DUMBO at 81 Washington St. They have lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and even some meat as well. There should be something hearty for everyone.

Serious Exercise for Serious Eaters

I highly recommend giving Bikram yoga a try. One session is 90 minutes of 105 degree torture, but if you keep at it you can have amazing results. I've lost up to 3 lbs of water weight just in one class - which is like instant gratification to keep me going back. You have to watch your alcohol intake and eat less before going, so I only have enough self-control to do it once a week. There are so many benefits besides weight loss - look into it!

(Fast) Lunch Options at/near the Javits Center?

If you did have time for lunch, or want to stop for dinner or a drink after - Hudson Yards Cafe is a nice little bar that has good food on 10th & 36th.

mango chili?!?!?!

Mango goes well with black beans and tomatoes. I bet you could find a black bean chili recipe and add mango chunks near the end of the cooking time so the mango doesn't get too mushy.

Maybe it has something to do with that always lingering dead-fish smell at GC market - I can't stand walking by there!

What to feed my sick ladies at home?

I always make ginger tea for myself and husband when we're sick. Slice up about 2" of ginger (no need to peel) and add to about 3-4 cups of water. Boil for about 15-20 minutes until the water is golden. Add fresh lemon juice and honey. It really helps you breathe easier and gives you some energy. I know it's not cold, but I also make carrot/lemon/ginger soup - somehow the onions, ginger, lemon and carrot are like a superdrug to snap you out of your cold - works every time!

Gluten Free Cake Substitution?

I've heard that Almond Flour is a good substitute in cake baking. It also may go well with the pistacio in your recipe, keeping it nut-related.

The Absolute Best Of Union Square Green Market

I agree, quality and selection varies. My attack plan for the Union Square greenmarket is to start on the south end. I browse and look at the pricing and see which stands are the busiest. I listen to what the customers are commenting on and asking, and try the samples that some stands put out. Once I get to the north end, I have a pretty good idea who has the best price and best looking produce. I hate the weekend crowds at the market, but Saturday morning really is the best time to go because there are more vendors.
