A Challenge to NYC Burger Joints: Put This Burger on Your Menu
Doesn't look good to me at all.
Hamden, Connecticut: A Half-Century of Charbroiling at the Glenwood Drive-In
It's not supposed to be funny. Don't read into it. It's just a name that uses a consonant that is consistent with the name Kelly. Celly's Cone Connection wouldn't work.

Some places are so good at demonstrating how little they know about hamburgers.

Substandard Sliders at Fern's White Diamond and Better Burger in New Jersey
Thanx for the warning Nick. I was looking forward to trying these two places. Never mind.

Brioche For Burgers?
I don't like brioche either. Hopefully this trend ends soon. As soon as I hear a place uses brioche, I cross it off my list.

Great job Nick. I've been waiting for an article like this.
Classic Sliders at White Rose System in Linden, New Jersey
Did I mistakenly end up on a photography site? Forget the stools, worry about the burgers.
A Different Kind of Slider at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey
Not that impressed with the burgers here. Much prefer White Diamond.

White Diamond, a Vintage Slider Emporium in Linden, New Jersey
Great review Nick. As one who has tried all the "White" burgers Jersey has to offer, I believe White Diamond is hands-down the best. BTW, you were also smart to pass on the quarter-pounder on the kaiser roll.

Nick-
Stopped by this place on my way home from work one day and it was the best burger (slider?) that i have eaten in a long time. Then this morning i saw this same guy on TV with Bobby Flay. Its nice to see a small place like this still keeps the art of the burger alive.

@Damon Gambuto Maybe just the tennis. I just got back from Roscoe's Chicken and waffles....

I don't understand the continued smashing and squashing of the burger. I have seen that way too many times and end up feeling cheated out of a good dining experience.
LESS is MORE
Oh skip the Mr. Hamburger in Carlstat on 120 by the Meadowlands. The burger never has a chance it is smashed and way over cooked.

Looks awful, that slider from White Diamond. The beef looks like it's been cut into a flower shape and left in a pit of lukewarm fat for a week.

I'd like to Shopsin's take on this.

@Nick ^5 darling, more juicy burgers please!!
Hamden, Connecticut: A Half-Century of Charbroiling at the Glenwood Drive-In
Yeah, I agree with hotdoglover. The dogs are where the action is, I've been disappointed by every burger I've ever had at the Glenwood (my grandparents lived practically across the street from them...)

@hotdoglover Actually its like going to Luger's and getting a hamburger. I would have had a hot dog but I was working and having consumed several burgers that day with more to go after I had to choose my battles. I will be back however and not just for the dogs, the clam strips looked amazing.
@Lvn4life Ketchup and mayo come standard on the burger but what you are seeing is mostly burger juice! I generally prefer my burgers sans tomatoes and ketchup.
@UnasBravas The topping to beef ratio is very California, but the smoky patty does assert itself.

We all the Glenwood "Two dogs and a french." Only those who are real regulars know what this really means.
Hamden, Connecticut: A Half-Century of Charbroiling at the Glenwood Drive-In
@Nick - what type of sauce is that hanging off the back of the burger? Ketshup? Ketshup and tomatoes together = overkill
Hamden, Connecticut: A Half-Century of Charbroiling at the Glenwood Drive-In
Nick,
How can you go to the Glenwood and not get a hot dog? That's like going to Peter Luger's and ordering fish! I've been to about a dozen hot dog stands in Connecticut and now that Rosco's is gone, I would have to rate the Glenwood top dog. A natural casing 5 to a lb charbroiled Hummel brand beef and pork dog. Self serve condiments, but I had mine with just musytard. Delicious.

The balance of tomato and onion to beef looks all wrong to me.
Photo of the Day: White Truffles and Fried Egg Burger from Village Whiskey
Pairing the truffles with a fried egg is a great idea. In fact, why not leave the poor burger out of it entirely? No one will be able to taste it under all that extra fat and flavor anyway.
Brioche For Burgers?
I think that brioche is IDEAL for a burger! English muffins are the worst of cop-outs.
Brioche For Burgers?
I won't order a burger if it comes on brioche, no matter how good the meat is. Brioche is just about the worst burger bun I can imagine, quickly followed by a baguette.

I lived in Hackensack for 20+ years and never stopped into White Manna.
I finally went there while I was back visiting relatives and I could kick myself for all those teenage years of eating at McDonalds across the street. How could I have been so dumb?!?
Guide to Sliders in Northern New Jersey
Great job. I've been trying to visit them all and review them. I recently dropped by the White Mana and the White Diamond in Clark- which stands out because they use poppy seed rolls and lots of pickles. I was surprised at how good the Mana was.
Another MIA joint is the Short Stop in Belleville and Bloomfield. They were similar to the Mana, but not as good. The Bloomfield one is a Dunkin Donuts near the Bloomfield Ave / GSP traffic maze.
I also miss all the little flame broiler burger spots that have disappeared- The Anthony Wayne, the Red Chimney. Not sure if any of those are left in North Jersey. A newcomer is Lil Burgers in Nutley, which makes slider-size flame broiled burgers on potato rolls. Not bad, actually.

I've been eating double-doubles for so long at White Rose in Highland Park, I salivate just by hearing the name White Rose nowadays. So damn good, and I can not figure out how they do it. That taste is so yummy!
I actually never knew the other two were still open, actually. I have to check them out one of these days, but while I am closer to White Manna in Hackensack, I much rather drive to White Rose any day of the week. Then finish it off by going to Thomas Sweet for a Blend-In in New Brunswick!

Great job Nick! What amazing research. I had no idea there were so many 'Whites' in North Jersey. Is someone buying White Diamond?

Love the article. I'm originally from Detroit and they have quite the slider scene, including Hunter House, Greene's and Bates. I moved to LA and found that any time I order a slider, I am given a disappointing mini-hamburger. This is how sliders should be: Greene's

@pastry262: A pilgrimage would be a good idea. I've always despised White Castle burgers (well, when I say always I mean since I first tried one in...'97?), but I visited White Manna a few months back and fell in love. They redeemed sliders in my eyes.

Thanks, roboppy. Man, these sliders look good. If only more slider-focused places would migrate Westward. I've been to White Castle, but it was a big "meh" for me. Looks like I'm going to have to make a pilgrimage to the East Coast!
