We Talk to Bobby Flay About Bobby's Burger Palace
Well first of all I was excited to eat at Bobby Flays place so I had high expectations but that shouldn't a affect my review. I ate at the Lake Grove restaurant. I ordered a blue burger medium rare, a dark chocolate shake and onion rings. The burger was actually raw! and the bottom half of the roll was not usable because it was saturated and I was unable to pick it up. I sent the burger back and this time I got one that was well done. They can't seem to get the cooking process right. Even that bottom half of the roll was wet. The shake was nothing more than ice cream stirred up to be soft, it was too thick to drink, and surprisingly for that price ($5.00) it was pretty small. The onion ring order was also small for the price and not so great, not crunchy or that tasty, rather bland. I have to say for the value, the whole meal was definitely not worth the price and the atmosphere was very cold and uninviting. I will definitely not be visiting this place again and I will not recommend this place to anyone either. I can honestly say that burger king is better than this place. Sorry Bobby, I think you better visit this location and straighten out your good name.

Hey dude, you got to eat at the restaurant that was next to Jim Rockford's trailer!!! That's seriously cool. I'm all over this place when I get to LA. FYI it used to be called the Sandcastle.
Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
I had a great meal at Minetta a few weeks ago, the burger was so good we ordered a 2nd one at the end of the meal. For the price-point naysayers, it's definitely worth it. I've never tasted anything quite like it.

Damon have you tried the burger at Rustic Canyon yet? Let's get a burger sometime. I would love to be fodder for your entries... http://www.diglounge.net/food/national-burger-day-at-rustic-canyon/

@BigWoollyMammoth
Well said. I momentarily lost sight of the celebratory nature of this beautiful, burger blogging. Cheers.

Damon specifically didn't whine about going to Cleveland. Rather, he pointed out that kind whining by someone from the coasts is a tired rhetorical technique and then he pointed out that he wasn't going to do the opposite and be obsequious. I think I figured this out when I read:
"Okay, normally this is the time when the coastal blogger either fortifies his snark credentials by eviscerating an easy target with worn clichés about a metropolis in peril or, alternatively, curries favor with an Middle American audience by communicating surprised delight at a resurgent city."
He was introducing his review by being self conscious about his status as a coastal writer and visitor in a city that would traditionally be bashed on the one hand, or over-served praise on the other, by someone like him. He then goes on to say that he's specifically not going to take either posture in his piece. I think I figured this out when he wrote: "I'm not going to assume either posture."
Rather, he mentioned it because it was relevant to an event in his life that would come up again later when he was strolling on the beach. It's a storytelling technique deployed to communicate his experience of having the burger in Malibu. Still with me?
Being put off by people who whine about Cleveland doesn't mean you have below grade level reader comprehension ability. It's the criticizing a person for doing something that he was EXPLICITLY not doing that means you have poor reading comprehension skills.
You are right, as for your skin tone in relationship to sun exposure, I can make no assumptions and it's beside the point.
Does this seem clear? Maybe ask a friend from an interior locale for further help.

WTF would anyone even bother to 1) go to this place 2) order food (burger) here 3) review it on a national "burger" blog. ugh!
It's Paradise Cove. Biggest AHT waste of time ever.
Paradise Lost at Paradise Cove Beach Cafe in Malibu, California
@iheartcheese -- and your comment criticizing other comments was so productive, right?
sorry, but when an article written by someone from the coasts starts out whining about having to go to cleveland (of all places, the horrors!) it puts a bad taste in my mouth right away. i don't think there's anything lacking in my reading comprehension or melanin by forming that opinion.

I also live in So Cal and I can also second Damon's comments about the
great ocean /beach views and general experience along Malibu. Really
fantastic. However, since some years ago when Bob Morris took over this place, the food which was never it's primary point really went downhill to
just plain disgusting in most of my experiences. Morris was behind Gladstones and a rib joint mini chain as well. Gladstones draws the crowds for sure but the food is even worse than Paradise Cove. You can't
eat scenery. Like most beach locales there are just no real winners along
Malibu. Best advice: go for the views, have a drink or two, and dine elsewhere.

Welcome to restaurant eating in prime real estate, kristygarr...That's kinda just the way it is sometimes, not that I don't b##ch about it regularly here in NYC. Nice review, D. I am glad you mentioned a under-toasted, unbuttered bun! Restaurants that neglect the bun buttering and toasting should be called out. Oh, and too bad no American cheese. I keep threatening to do this, but I'm going to start carrying Kraft singles in my handbag to my burger outings.

Sometimes I'm still really surprised by the range on the idiot meter for blog commenting. (I'm looking at you anysuchname, aargh and oneiron. Though I kinda fantasize about you all being repressed teenage boys, pale skin glowing in the light of your screen, high fiving each other back and forth over the ether with useless commentary.) I guess reading can be really hard sometimes. All of those nouns. All of those verbs. All of that stringing of those nouns and verbs together in new and interesting ways. Sigh. I feel tired.
Per usual, I enjoyed the thoughtful post. For me, it makes me feel like I actually get to read something smart and insightful during those small windows of time that I routinely spend on the internet these days.

@ sbushore ..The Dominican Republic... my husband was sooooo sick from food poisining and he doesn't eat meat.
Bobby Flay's restaurant sounds disastrous and who needs to pay those prices?? I like buying really good meat and cooking it, it gives me a feeling of control.

Missed this the first time around.
First Kenjialtci, I had to check if that wasn't something I posted. I couldn't have written it any better. Especially the part about well done being very juicy. Truth. If you have a burger well done, on a flat top griddle, and the thing is dry, its because either its beef that is low in fat, comes in pre pattied by a machine, or the dumb ass "cook" in the back it pressing the SNOT out of it with his stupid spatula. Great job Ken.
Second, I'm not saying I know for sure, but I find it REAL HARD to believe that ANY health department, AS MUCH AS THEY WOULD LOVE TO, would EVER be able to pass a "regulation" on how someone can order food. They tried it with eggs, it got booted. Me thinks Mr. Flay is saying that to kinda say "hey, we would love to cook it rare, but we cant" I think hes afraid of getting people sick. Which surprises me because I think most of this "I got sick from undercooked burger" isn't really food poisoning. If you buy quality beef, grind it ON PREMISE, its gotta be almost impossible to get food poisoning. I'm not saying IMPOSSIBLE, but real close to it. I'm just not buying his answer.
ANd his "proprietary" thing.....I got a feeling he doesn't want to say because he's using a product like whiz or whirl. Its a butter tasting oil. In food establishments, this product would burn and can be held at room temp without hardening. I think its fine, but he probably sees it a low class or something, thats why he didn't want to mention it.

Worst case of food poisoning I have ever had . The only thing that comes close is one other time in the Dominican Republic . I ate at the Monmouth Mall location on 12/8/08 . Word of advice if you do eat there make sure your burger is well cooked! Mine did not appear to be to rare which is even more disturbing .....
What's the Best Cheese for Cheeseburgers?
I put blue cheese crumbles, bacon, and diced red onion *in* my burger patties the last time I made burgers and they were heavenly...
What's the Best Cheese for Cheeseburgers?
I'll eat American, but I prefer almost everything else. I like strong tasting cheese like extra sharp cheddar, bleu and gorgonzola and one of my faves is smoked mozzarella. Other smoked cheeses are also tasty on burgers.
What's the Best Cheese for Cheeseburgers?
The closest thing to an In-N-Out Burger is at the new Great American Hamburger and Hot Dog Company in Great Barrington, MA. I think that it comes wrapped in wax paper is key.

I sought guidance from the Talmud.
' To say too much is to say nothing ', so my commentary is to kvetch about the frozen french fries. So the young prince is so lazy or uninspired that he thinks his customers don't deserve fresh, hand cut fries ?
He should realize that 50' away in the Food Court is a Nathan's which has
delicious ones and could be sneaked in by an irate customer who feels insulted by the drecky ones he serves !
The more I type the angrier I become, he thinks we're fools, and I thought he was a classy guy. Ego blemishes judgement. He should talk to his Rabbi also about the small portions of everything. What a long conversation that would be !!

I also agree with Storm Cadet. Just ate there (7-22-2008 @ 5:30 pm) and it was terrible. NOT WORTH THE PRICE. We waited on the line and only one person was behind the register. Then the place was FULL of flies...everywhere. We finally found seats and waited for our food. I ordered two cheeseburgers, fries, and an order of onion rings. The hamburgers are small and the fries were just okay...nothing great. Where are the napkins??? For the amount of money I spent ($30) I really expected something quite different. Very disappointed and I wont go back.

I wished, I waited and hope springs eternal . . . . . however the Iron Chef was not to deliver on his promise.
God, I hate disappointment. Actually I have been to BBP on three ocassions, always varieing my order and never being very pleased. Too
many flaws. Perhaps I'll wait a year to return. It was stated earlier 'hope springs eternal'
By the way, does anyone know what ever happened to Jackie Malouf ?
We Talk to Bobby Flay About Bobby's Burger Palace
I love steaks rare, but to be honest I really don't like burgers rare. I simply don't like the texture of it and never order them below medium.
Anyone else like that or am I the exception?
