Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

We lived in the Philippines for a couple of years when I was a kid. And one of my father's friends would often invite us to his private island for feasting. Eating lechon on the beach ranks up there with my all time top food memories. Mmm. Piggy.

Shake Shack's December Custard Calendar

So sad about the lack of Gingerbread... That was my favorite flavor last December. I can't imagine that Prune Armac will make up for it's absence. Gingerbread...you will be missed!

Death of the Girl Scout Cookie?

I have as long as i can remember been a fan of girl scout cookies. i had different ways of eating the specific type; samoas in the fridge or even freezer, thin mints, with milk, bite opposite ends of the cookie off just a bit, and suck the milk through the middle...the cookie got soft and milk soaked, and the coating kept it whole, and when you popped it in your mouth and chewed it...WOW, same way for tagalongs...A signifigant part of me is saddened by the thought...but i offer an alternative for interested parties.
Come see what i have been up to in the kitchen. I keep tabs with the newsletter and love it, it gives me brief respite from the day.
Everyone for your consideration, i humbly and thankfully give you

Death of the Girl Scout Cookie?

I'm a dad of my 10 week old daughter. I'm thinking of the future and looking for something like the girl scouts of america for her to join in the future. I looked at their website and there are more than one tab with the word Cookies. I got the feeling that the whole thing was about cookies. I was very disappointed. I hope they do get rid of cookies. I couldn't find anything about their merit badges, there was very little about hiking/backpacking. At least you don't have to use the word god in the scout law. I assume they allow gays. Good thing she is a girl and not a boy, I'd never want my child to be a member to the boy scouts (anti guy, anti atheist).

The Carnegie Deli Pastrami Sandwich Mitosis

@Luthor: Meiosis also requires replication of chomosomes. Mitosis is a replication (2n->4n) and split into two daughter cells (2n x2). Meiosis is a replication (2n->4n) and spliting into 4 cells (1n x4) eventually. It is not simply dividing a cell (2n) into two where each receives one set (1n x2).

If you really care to be precise, this process is more like budding probably. Where a bigger organism buds off smaller organisms that are genetically identical. Budding happens for unicellular and multicellular organisms. In this case, the big sandwich could of course be multicellular thus explaining the large amount of DNA (ie. pastrami) it contains as the collective DNA of many cells. It doesn't need to replicate the pastrami before the process starts...a bunch of it is just there. Then some of the cells bud off to start the new organism/sandwich thus taking some of the DNA/pastrami with it.

Sure, I was a biology major and now a medical student, but this information could easily have been found on Wikipedia and/or a high school biology text.

Te fist hing that I can recall is the Scotch eggs my mther used to make. She would wrap spiced ground pork around hard boiled eggs and deep fry them till golden brown. She would serve it with German mustard but I liked it with maple syrup.

There was a restaurant in Orlando, Florida, that had the best bbq pork...we would eat there at least once to two times a week. They have since closed but I still have fond memories of their bbq pork.
