going to Austin

Yes also to Kerbey Lane. The pancakes - mmm, boy. And may I humbly yet emphatically second Torchy's Tacos? They have tasty combinations like jerk chicken, jalapeno, mango, and sour cream, there's a turkey mole taco-of-the-month happening right now, and their queso is one of my favorites. Plus they have a few locations and they are incredibly reasonably priced. Finally, should you be willing to hunt it down, The Noble Pig has some seriously good sandwiches. Duck pastrami? Yes, please.

And really, all these suggestions above mine are good ones. It's part of what I love about Austin.

Orem, UT: Satisfying Burgers Far From the Boardwalk at Coneys Frozen Custard

Coneys! Glad to here it fared well here on SE.Of course a burger and frozen custard is certainly not what I need right now; and yet, is it?

Cook the Book: 'The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook'

Oh, I second the lembas bread!

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Ship's eggs. My mom's family all calls them that, and I never understood why. Maybe it's a derivative of egg on a boat or the pirate/sailor's eye names? Or they were introduced to it by someone named Ship?

The Burger Lab: The Ins-n-Outs of an In-N-Out Double-Double, Animal-Style

As an In-N-Out employee myself, I give you mad props for accuracy. A few minor notes: for true Animal Style, a dollop of extra spread goes atop the lettuce. Also, you were right to add the vinegar to the spread, as the secret recipe happens to include mustard, though I have no idea on amounts. Finally, next time you make one, or eat at In-N-Out for that matter, you should try my favorite variation on Animal Style - replacing the chopped grilled onions with whole grilled onions. Oh yummy yum yum.

Food lover or food snob?

This is funny to me, as I was about to start a similar conversation. The impetus was this:
I was in the grocery store, and next to me a clerk helped a group of women locate the capers. When one woman wondered aloud what capers were exactly, I heard another respond, "They're fish eggs!" to which I audibly guffawed. None of them noticed, luckily, but immediately after I thought to myself, "When did I become a condescending food jerk?" It's not like everyone should know what exactly a caper is.

Out-of-Town Guest Disappointment

Sigh. I wish I were Traveller's sister-in-law; I'm always the one that has to coax people into going with me to "weird" places. I would LOVE to go to a Tibetan restaurant. Should I find myself in St. Paul, you have yourself an eating buddy!

Quiz: How Much Do You Know About French Fries?

7 out of 10! I'll take it. But this is not helping my pregnant-lady-fry-craving one bit, I'm afraid.

What's The Worst Restaurant Name You've Ever Heard?

In Utah there's a chain of buffets called Chuck-A-Rama. The idea is to be chuck wagon themed, but I know I'm not the only one that is reminded of vomiting when they hear that name.

Dinner Tonight: Chipped Beef Gravy

Oh I do love chipped beef! Though I usually had it on biscuits. Eggs Goldenrod - pretty much the same idea only with hard-boiled eggs - was another popular dish in my home. I think the saltiness paired with the creamy bechamel and the starchy bread hits a the right note of satisfaction for some people...whilst others gag. :)

Cook the Book: Unforgettable Desserts

My mom's chocolate crepes with white chocolate mousse and raspberry sauce. Oh yum.

Any "cultured" buttermilk lovers out there?

I've never tried it, but my new found affection for plain kefir makes me curious about buttermilk serving as a cheaper alternative. Mmmm. I'm going to do that this week. I'll let you know!

How can I salvage these fall-apart meatballs?

Why do I try to improvise?

I made a few missteps in an attempt to make meatballs, most notably adding too much egg and bread crumb. Now they are little more than (flavorful!) loose ground beef, seasoned with tomato, dill, onion, and lemon juice.

I've considered throwing the lot into that great catch-all, Shepherd's Pie, but are there other options for a mountain of vaguely Russian-tasting hamburger?
