Kimchi

go to k-town and get it there. more affordable and better variety. otherwise you'll spend $8+ for a small jar of meh kimchi. there's also a kimbap/lunch spot called Kofoo in chelsea on 8th and 26th that (i think) sells small containers of it.

The frozen foie gras with pine nut brittle (and some other bits) at Momofuku Ko. Such a mix of flavors and textures. I loved it. My brother hated it. My friend was confused.

The eggs benedict at WD50 was super too - the hollandaise thingamabob was like a really delicious jalapeno popper. But without the 'peno. :P

Villa Nova: A Neighborhood Institution the Whole City Should Discover

Does anyone remember Villa Rosa on the North side of Chicago - in Edgebrook? That was my family's favorite place for thin crust growing up. Now that it's under new ownership, it's an utter disappointment.

I still pine for that perfect pizza. Grabbing the corner slices before my brother could!

This Week in 'New York Times' Food News

“If they make it illegal to serve egg-white drinks, that would be Hurricane Katrina for us,” said one of several bartenders and club owners who said they had been challenged by inspectors but declined to be quoted on the record, for fear of antagonizing health officials."

I found this comment made in the NYT article about raw egg to be in extremely bad taste. The audacity of this bartender to marginalize a tragedy like Hurricane Katrina in order to argue for a cocktail ingredient?

The world will go on whether or not this Prohibition/Speakeasy cocktail boom gets to keep it's eggs.

Cook the Book: New Orleans Style Red Beans

I guess you could do canned beans but I imagine it wouldn't have the full depth of flavor and richness of Red Beans cooked proper. Traditionally, you'd cook these over a full day of chores (Monday - laundry day).

They have canned versions for that quick fix. :) Find them here: http://www.bluerunnerfoods.com/

Hot Apple Cider near Central Park?

Le Pain Quotidien (sp?) has hot cider. There's one on West 64th btw CPW and Columbus.

And yeah, the Greenmarkets would have cider too! There's another one on Saturdays at the little triangle park by Lincoln Center - a short jaunt from the lower west side of the park.

Can Anyone Help Me Make Bulgolgi?

if you have an Asian market, they will probably have thinly sliced sirloin packed and labeled "bulgogi" in the freezer or meat counter. make sure to serve with red leaf lettuce, razor thin cut scallions, sesame oil and hot pepper paste mixed with soy bean paste (sam jang). also, throw some thin sliced garlic and mushrooms onto the grill with the meat.

My favorite is the rainbow colored slices of duk and plucking the pine nuts off the little jewels of duk.

Also, make sure you eat lots of duk buk ki off the street side stands. So spicy and so good.

Cook the Book: 'Real Cajun'

When I was having a bad day or was sick, my mom would make me a bowl of rice mixed with soy sauce and butter. The butter would be melting slowly into the hot rice and I would eat fast so I could catch that last little gob of cool, sweet butter.

On cold Saturday afternoons, my dad would take leftover rice and boil it with water. We would sit on stools at the kitchen island and slurp it down together with lots and lots of spicy radish kimchi and toasted seaweed. He would tell me stories about his childhood. This is his ultimate comfort food and now it's mine!
