What Are The 5 Things Everyone Should Know How To Cook

Extending from the "Cooking rice when **** hits the fan scheme", one can easily solve the global food shortage problem, when faced with an ever growing global population.

1. Cooking surgical instruments
2. Preparing human meat

This just HAS to work. I mean, the "Hannibal Lecter" movies were hugely popular so people must like the idea. We do not have to resolve to creepy insects. And just think of the ease and possibilities: you can instantly eat "Chinese" or "Italian" without having to buy or use herbs and spices etc.

I'll stick around the "Nasty Bits" section of this site to see Chi Chi Wang come up with some tasty recipes.

Now I'll submit this idea to the UN. I'm sure that if there is not yet a Nobel prize for solving food problems, it will be instantly created and awarded to me.

Culinary Ambassadors: Breakfast in Rome, Cappuccino e Cornetto

Those sweet breakfasts were indeed something I found striking when my parents took us there in may. The hotel served these (delicious) rolls amongst others, but no hearty things like meats or even cheese. Even for a sweet tooth like myself, I thought it was a little boring after four days. More on that over on my blog

Video: Burger King Pretty Much Admits to Stealing McDonald's Sausage Egg McMuffin

Oh come on. This would be like suing every hamburger chain for stealing from [insert small hamburger joint name here] because they stole the idea of a patty in a bun.
If only they would introduce it over here in Holland too :)

Video: Disney-fied 'Family Guy' Sings About Pie

I watched this yesterday over at my friends' place. It was great! How often do you get one of your favorite animated series to combine both pies and a bashing of an animator authority like Disney?

Note those fine details like a Cleveland skunk and a Mayor Adam West mouse :)

Snapshots from the UK: Wagamama's Defunct #28 (Chili Mushroom Ramen)

At first I was happy when the Wagamama settled down in my hometown in the Netherlands and I was all the more happy with the fantastic broth that my noodles were served in. However, on subsequent returns the broth turned out to be different every time and not as fantastic any more :(
I also didn't like the service actually on these returns. I mean, I know that it's basically a fastfood place, but putting a sign at the entrance stating that you have to wait to be seated and not actually paying attention to incoming customers who wait to be seated is kind of annoying.

I think the service and the different broths are the main reasons for me not frequenting that place anymore, although I would recommend it to people who'd like a different eating experience, I guess.

The 10-Ingredient Shopping List

Corn
Eggs
Ground meat
Onions
Flour
Butter
Stock cubes
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Courgettes

What an interesting way of making a groceries list, usually I'd start by thinking budget first, then meal options and finally the ingredients needed for such meals. Actually, this is the exact opposite way.

Now, what could I make using these ingredients? I could have:

  1. Pasta:
    • Freshly made pasta using flour and eggs, boiled in stock (from cubes) to get that extra flavour
    • Tomato sauce with onions and possibly courgettes
    • Ground meat

  2. Corn cookies (corn, eggs, flour, onion) and meat balls (ground meat, eggs, onion and anything else I can think of)

  3. Potato and courgette gratin, using thinly sliced potato and courgette and probably some garlic and cream (which I could argue to have in the cupboard)

  4. Hamburgers
    • Self-made buns, making own dough from flour

    • Patties, using the ground meat

    • Fried onions

    • Ketchup, mayo and pickles from the fridge

  5. Pizza
    • Tomato sauce, possibly cooked myself

    • Dough, from flour

    • Courgettes, onions, corn and ground meat on top

    • Cheese would be missing, but I suppose I could argue to have that in the fridge as well

  6. Soup, made from the stock cubes and any of the other ingredients I'd feel like tossing in. Heck, I could even create some kind of creamy soup, by first making a roux.

  7. Quiche

    • Dough, from flour and butter

    • Eggs, courgettes, onions, corn stuffing

Now, in real life, I wouldn't do most of these things, because I hate making dough in general, but using ingredients this way feels like a nice frugal thing to do and using ingredients efficiently.
