Quiz: How Much Do You Know About Indianapolis Food Culture?

There is no lack of culture in Indianapolis. Within White River State Park there are at least three museums. And don't forget that the largest children's museum in the country is in Indy.
The original Shapiro's Deli is on South Meridian. I've only been there twice but loved it. Make sure to check out the art museum and grounds around 34th street(?) and go to Crown Hill National Cemetary to see James Whitcomb Riley's grave (among others) and a hilltop veiw of the city.

Waking up on a cold winter's day in the 1980's at my grandfather's house. He had cooked bacon in a well seasoned pan that was probably 60+ years old. The scents and smells of childhood are wonderful!

I will have to say that I will always remember how I felt as a child to wake up to the smell of bacon. What a wonderful wake up. Wish someone would fix some for me tomorrow morning.

Cook the Book: '660 Curries' by Raghavan Iyer

There was an Indian restaurant that I knew of growing up in northeastern Indiana but never had the chance to try, perhaps out of some sort of fear. It wasn't until I had moved to New York that I had my first taste of Indian cuisine. We lived in Jackson Heights Queens which had a wonderful mix of Indian, Pakistani, Argentinean, Bolivian, Columbian...residents. Jackson Diner is the well known go-to place for a terrific Indian buffet. I loved it that first time. Now, a couple of times every year I get that craving.

Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'

I am a novice when it comes to making my own pie crust. But, seeing as how my partner and I had just picked four pounds of blueberries I thought I should give the whole thing a try. I take no credit, it was an America's Test Kitchen recipe and it was brilliant. There was vodka in the crust as well as ground tapioca and shredded granny smith apple in the filling. It all came out perfectly without any running. I may use parts of this same recipe to make a blackberry pie from the berries we just picked two weeks ago. Excellent!

My (Sort Of) First Taste of White Castle's Burgers

White Castle was a regular stop for my family when we lived in Indianapolis in the 1970's. Once we moved north of Fort Wayne, White Castle was only available on the occassional trip back to Indy. It was always a treat we looked forward to.
Fast forward to 1998 when I moved to New York City. There was a White Castle in Jackson Heights not too far away from our apartment. I thought I would be in Heaven. I made my order and was disgusted to find that there was catsup on every burger. In the midwest a White Castle burger consists of a beef patty cooked on a griddle with minced onions placed on a steamed bun with one or two pickle slices. After a couple of visits to various Castles in the New York/ New Jersey metro area I found out that catsup is automatically put on every burger. It ruins the whole thing! All you basically taste is the catsup.
So if you live in New York do yourself a favor & ask for your White Castles to be without catsup.

Peach, apple, blueberry, strawberry-rhubarb; I don't care. As long as they are done simply. I just need use of a microwave for 20 seconds and a scoop of vanilla ice cream with any fruit pie and that is perfect.

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

come on! Can't we just be happy that they are going to plant a garden. We all have foods we could do without. President Obama doesn't have to like beets and he doesn't need to hear from anyone on why he should plant them in his garden. Have a nice day and pass it on to others!

Website:

Location: Feather Sound, FL

About: Originally from the Midwest. Now in Florida via New York & New Jersey. Unfortunately didn't become a "foodie" in New York City but rather here in Florida.

Favorite foods: Bahn Mi, Bolgoki, Kim Chi, Pot Roast, mashed potatoes & gravy, Cubans, Lechon Asado, rhubbarb pie, black bean soup, Babka, chocolate chip cookies, banana pudding, pastrami on rye, Carnitas, BBQ pulled pork, authentic gorditas, fish tacos, Brooklyn pizza

Last bite on earth: Perfectly ripe peaches & strawberries. A crisp, sweet apple. Fresh asparagus & a medium rare hamburger dripping with juices topped with bacon, cheese & all the usual toppings. And one piece of the finest dark chocolate. That should take me away in peace.
