Nice! I like polished looks with my meat. Beer shakes and doctors who eat only burgers? It's been a zany week, no?!

Ha--Sorry your burger lost this bready battle. Good to check out the classics anyway. I like the name!
My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood
Whoa. That burger doesn't look so good. I do like the BBQ at their OG Venice location, despite the fact that it's NC-style, and I am a TX/TN-style grrrl at heart. The aesthetic really works in Venice, too. Will be interesting to see it in WeHo. Nice post!

Ha! Nice! You'll always have Eagle Rock. :) I can't believe they cut your burger in half. Wildly aggressive for the early stages.

Discovering the Fifth Taste at Umami Burger in Los Angeles
@pthom: Yeah, that was so incredibly confusing. "Words" are so hard to make out sometimes.
@serious1: People who draw analogies from "Dharma and Greg" episodes (yeah, I searched your commenting past, punk) really have no business commenting on the literary prowess of others.
Nice post, Damon.
Behind the Orange Curtain at Ruby's Diner, Newport Beach, California
My first weekend in LA, the then-LA Times magazine (R.I.P.) cover jumped out at me with one of the best headlines I've ever seen: "AFFLUENZA." The featured subject was Orange County. A lot of people (self included) are defensive about their oft-derided hometowns for whatever reason (Some people pay professionals with degrees by the hour to talk about these feelings "Not Gonna Take It." Perhaps worth looking into ... Just sayin.'), but the "Orange Curtain" is lambasted left and right by pretty much everyone, dude. Take a deep breath. Re: the burgers: I've actually heard good things about the Pier in general. The only Ruby's experience I've had was at LAX, and it was so inconceivably awful, I actually require a mulligan. Rock on, Damon.
Guy Fieri Eats The Hunch And I Can't Stop Thinking of Colin Farrell
35 people, 1 patty?! W - H - O - A. Feed that to Farrell before giving him a bottle of Sun-In and BAM! Fieri!
Taking Comfort In The Kitchen in Silver Lake, California
I have been wanting to try that place forever--now I'm going to make it a priority. Sounds like the perfect mix of comfy food and comfy atmosphere. And thanks for the bread-related heads-up~
Triumph of the New At Rowdy Red Wine & Burger Bar In Los Angeles
If you don't enjoy a meaty tale about something you love, you probably don't really love it. (Or you're just peeved you didn't get to it first.) Keep telling me pretty stories, Damon.
By the Time I Get to Arizona: Delux Burger in Phoenix
Really rich post, Damon. Kudos for adding even more meaning to a subject you already relate so passionately. It truly enhances the experience. (I'm talking about life and burger-blog-reading here, dude.) I wept a little myself. Also, I'm pretty sure your second patty mooed at me from the depths of cyberspace. Dang, that's some rare meat.
8 oz. Burger Bar in West Hollywood Misses the Mark
I won't tell your cardiologist, but I'm impressed. Sounds like you had time to work up a healthy appetite. I'm kinda bummed to hear that about the decor, but I'm still curious enough to get over there and test the 8 oz.
The Burger at The 101 Coffee Shop in Hollywood Is a Bit of a Turkey
A triumph! Love this description of the 101 and the nature of our town. That is exactly how I felt about the scene when I went for the first (OK, only) time. The burger looks like more than nice meat in the photo. Bummer. Perfect seasonal post.
The Oinkster in Eagle Rock, California, Serves Slow Fast Food Burgers
Well, I'm only a connoisseur of tomato-centric condiments, but I look back on my first trip to The Oinkster with sheer glee. Just decadent enough to be awesome without making you feel gross. By the way, kudos for articulating the slice of celluloid that is "the burbs" LA-style. Or something. And bringing it all back to the Coen Bros... Well played, Sir. Well played.
My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood
So, for the record, I have never met or corresponded with Damon Gambuto (but, I would love to!). Also, for the record, I had Baby Blues delivered a few weeks ago, and had an extra-ordinary experience - story to follow.
To all the folks who are upset that Damon did not review the BBQ at Baby Blues, from what I can tell Damon Gambuto is a Los Angeles based burger correspondent, and he is great at what he does. Sometimes BBQ joints can offer up a good burger. In fact, Damon recently reviewed three burgers at Zeke's Smokehouse, which is directly across the street from Baby Blues. It is a great write up, and you can search for it on this site.
I went to Zeke's Smokehouse last night based on Damon's review and I loved it, and commented earlier today on that piece - thanking him, because the burger was so tasty. Damon gave baby Blues the same shot, and didn't love the burger. Oh, well. Get over it. At least he was brave enough to give that combination of flavors a fair shake.
BTW - I once had a a grilled veal chop topped with melted brie and lingonberries that was exquisite. Perhaps the burger would shine if the blue cheese and bacon stood out more and the sauce had whole berries rather than being more of a pureed sauce. It would probably require arugula to balance the sweet, salty and pungent with some peppery goodness. But, as a purist, I would still prefer a good, quality burger without all the hoopla and dressy fanfare. That's just how I roll.
I am assuming Lincolnberry is an Ebonics-esque play on lingonberry. If you are truly curious, give Baby Blues a call.
My experience at Baby Blues? My husband and I wanted beef ribs, and when I asked the gal on the phone how many came with the order she replied, "one - it's like a big steak." We decided to give it a shot, and each ordered one, which came with a choice of two sides. I opted for collards and mashed potatoes, hubby had corn and cole slaw. The sides were delish, but one of the ribs was burnt and less than half the size of the other rib.
I let my honey have the good rib and insisted he eat it while I called, because I am sweet like that (and we had just moved into our new place and he had been doing hard physical labor and desperately needed the fortification). The hostess got the manager who apologized profusely and asked if I wanted another rib. I did. Forty minutes later, the manager showed up at the door and told my hubz he cooked it himself. Maybe it was my sultry phone-sex voice, but I'd like to think it was solid dedication. Anyways, it was nice. A chuck blade, essentially. It didn't rock my socks off, but it was a good chuck rib weighing in at 16 ounces or more, and it was properly (lovingly?) cooked. The sauce was not my favorite, as it was a bit sweet and overly tart with vinegar for a tomato based sauce, and the XXX sauce was a bit salsa-like for my taste. The service, on the other hand, made a strong, favorable impression.
Thanks for the well-written review, Damon. As I left Zeke's last night, I glanced across the street and wondered if Baby Blues had a decent burger. Now I know what to expect.
Maack out.
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
Save your money, folks. The burger at 25 Degrees is a sad affair. Today, the service was both inattentive and poorly timed. But on to the food. Great rings and tasty fries. The burger meat itself is great--one is keenly aware that it is sirloin, and that is a good thing. Sadly, both burgers were overcooked, and the bun is a disaster. The top of bun was tough and dry enough to make a "thock" sound when tapped with a fingernail. It basically overwhelmed the burger with dry joylessness. The bottom of the bun, also a shamefully overbaked puck of parched, crumbling sadness. The cheese was not melted over the burger, but simply served as an unmelted pile of gunk in the center of the burger, which had so be scraped from the bun and then spread.
The high point is that the waitress must have stuffed two angels down the back of her pants to present such a compelling view. So, the highlights---Good sides, good sights, good sirloin.
Overview: 25 Degrees is a weak suck and can be avoided.
Discovering the Fifth Taste at Umami Burger in Los Angeles
Just perfect---the meat to bun ratio is ideal to the last bite. I had the Manly Burger, and the porkbelly was a perfect addition. The ketchup was heavy on the anise, but the burger didn't need it. This is my favorite burger next to the one at Olives in Las Vegas at the Bellagio and the one at the Left Bank at the On The Ave hotel in NYC's Upper West Side. Umami is my new "go to" burger in LA.

i enjoy my burger halved--but by me, not them! nice pic, nice read.

I love Beeps. The breakfasts are outstanding. I think the burgers are pretty good, as are the hot dogs and the fries.

@jbuffalo - thanks so much for the huzzah and bonus points for dropping in the "gallimaufry."
@oneiron - certainly price matters, and this burger is no cheap eat, but I think I'd say it's worth it for a special treat burger. is the "oneiron" a golf reference, if so kudos! Watch out for some golf themed posts in the future.
@mattatouille - thanks! This is indeed a "luxe burger."
@Schimming - I'll have to try Burger Lounge -- La Jolla isn't too far away.
@chrisatdomainerestaurants - glad you enjoyed it. kudos to you all on the good burger. happy to contact you. happy to talk to all our AHT readers!
@awkwardcabbage - Thanks so much. I really appreciate the support. Glad you liked the review! Two snaps up and a twist right back 'atcha!
@dzhughes - you are mucho generous. Thanks, mate!
@shred - Ok. This is a tough one. First off, I love The Golden State and think Jason and James are superstars. They've built a great cafe and I encourage everyone to support it. 25 Degrees is also a seriously good burger. Personally, I find the bacon at TGS distracting, but then again I usually feel bacon is misplaced atop burger. For me, it distracts from the clean beef taste I crave. The TGS burger sans bacon gives me just that. The 25D burger is a more extravagant burger taste. My choice of one over the other might be mostly based on my burger mood.

You finally found a good burger. Next time you go there just ask for half the cheese, just rings, and kill the shake, and I bet it will be 100% perfect!

A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
25 Degrees is still my favorite upscale burger joint, though I frequent Umami more often because it's in my neighborhood.
Damon, which would you rate higher, the burger at 25 Degrees or The Golden State? I appreciate the variety at 25D but can't find a combo I like better than the bacon cheeseburger at TGS.
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
I'd been pining over whether to spend the coin on 25 Degrees for months and months now. Friends have often raved about it but they're the same friends who rave about lots of high-priced mediocre food so until now I've been in the dark. Thanks for hitting the light switch, man. I think your comment about the shake is mucho hilarious!

i have to say, this particular article was especially well crafted (though i always love your reviews). two snaps a twist!

That sounds delicious...I am going to have to try it when I am up in LA. Meanwhile i get my burger fix at Burger Lounge in La Jolla!

nice review. I always tell people 25 degrees is my favorite 'luxe" burger in LA and I think you've proved it. The meat there is fantastic.

I'm glad that everyone seems to like this "fancy" upscale burger place. My experience at these types have been weak on the burgers but way overboard on the pretense (see: FLIP in Atlanta). The Counter has been the ideal ratio for good burgers and pretense in my experience. But I recommend better food at lesser atmosphere places.
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
great review Damon, and as I can attest, a great burger. The only problem I have with the build your own burger model is that my gluttonous side too often wins out and I end up with an odd gallimaufry of toppings that, while individually delightful, do not go well together. Sorry to hear about the guinness shake, I was intrigued.

@Adam Kuban - Thanks, Adam! Yeah, I've been beaten up at my burger lunches of late. Umami is great and probably expanding to a second location soon...I'll have more on that story soon.
@stewmeat - Indeed x 2. The rings are the best have had in LONG time and I thought my patty was doomed when I saw that bun, but they've really come up with a good recipe for their brioche (not usually my preference) bun.
@carriebwc - just looking at it as I write this I want another!
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
wow, that looks like a great burger.
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
Those onion rings are what o-rings should look like! In regards to the burger, I would have guessed from the pic that there was too much bun in the b2b ratio, glad that wasn't the case.
A Premium Burger at 25 Degrees in Hollywood, California
I, too, am glad to see you've found a burger you've liked! Good deal. I wonder if anything will beat the Umami burger.

Loved the post, Damon- and certainly a beautiful burger.. indeed, a lot to be said for simple pleasures!
My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood
Sounds like this place needs to apply the occam's razor principle to their burger makin'... simple is best.

i live almost directly across the street from this restaurant -- i came in with the bf on a saturday at like 8 -- the hostess looked at us with a completely straight face and told us it was an hour and a half wait. WHAT?! ha. naturally we did not stay.
My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood
Google doesn't think lincolnberries exist. I don't either. Also, the combination of what are presumably lingonberries with mustard and bleu cheese sounds just awful.
My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood
Lincolnberry (??) mustard--I can't get the photo out of my mind. Yikes.
My Baby Blues BBQ in West Hollywood
Why do people make it so hard? Burgers should be easy and simple to make and taste GOOD.
