Book Giveaway: Mike Colameco's Food Lover's Guide to NYC

I lived in NYC for 6.5 years before moving to SF. I miss El Paso Taqueria in Spanish Harlem for their guacamole and cheese enchiladas with verde sauce. I also miss Cooked Tree Creperie and Flea Market in the East Village. Most of all, though, I miss Life Cafe for it's corn bread, bloody marys and eggless rancheros!

i'm a sucker for bread pudding -- one of the best i've ever had was with a salted caramel sauce ... yummy!

also, my dad used to make a huckleberry souffle with a wild turkey cream sauce that was to-die-for.

Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'

Well, since my boyfriend is a vegetarian, I have been experimenting more and more with meatless protein. Memorable meals include: a "stroganoff" made with mushrooms, crumbles and goat cheese; fresh pasta with fresh basil, olive oil, summer squash, zucchini, parmesan, fake Italian sausage (the next time we added a tomato sauce to the leftovers for further tastiness); buttermilk biscuits with a huge salad; our homemade pinto bean burritos on fresh tortillas and so much more.

Laid-off Restaurant Critic's Plan B? Cook

danskos are the only things i can walk and stand in for long periods. they got me through years as a busser, waitress, cocktail waitress, coat-check girl. not to mention 6 years as a new yorker who walked a lot.

i swear by them! and their more casual (less clog looking) line -- see the "vita" worked well for long nights on my feet too.

Cook the Book: 'Almost Meatless'

i love roasted vegetables: broccoli, brussels sprouts, yams, zucchini, squash, turnips -- whatever you like. toss with olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and a bit of mustard. delicious. even more delicious with some turkey kielbasa on top, but the meat isn't necessary.

My dad. He's a chef ... started out as a janitor in a butcher shop when he was like 18 and worked his way up until he oversaw 7 restaurants at 4 different property locations serving anything from counter-top diner fare to fine dining.

Cook the Book: Serves One

I cook for one all the time. This winter, my favorite was halved brussels sprouts and minced garlic tossed with olive oil and roasted cut-side down on a cookie sheet at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes. I also love toast with black beans, a fried egg, cheese and avocado ... yummy!

Sourdough Doesn't Always Mean 'Good'

Layer sauerkraut in a casserole dish, place pork chops on top and season (I use cracked black pepper, garlic powder and smoked paprika), cover with lid or seal with foil, bake in 400 degree oven for 45 minutes. I like to make mashed potatoes with it, but have also just done steamed veggies on the side.

Gosh, my favorite family dinner!? That's hard . My family is full of great cooks so I guess it has more to do with the atmosphere. So then I would have to go with Christmas eve dinner. 14 cousins plus 16 Aunts and Uncles all eating and drinking and being merry. Usually there's a goose (which doesn't hurt) and floating islands for desert. super yummm, it warms my heart just to think about it.

One of my favorite family meals is banh xeo. They're savory, yellow crepes and having all sorts of people in my family through marriage, some being born in Vietnam, some being born here, etc., my mom gets a lot of different requests as to what to put in them. First she makes the vegetarian kind for those folks then regular Americanized ones then the hardcore ones.

About katalia

Website: http://dirtsworld.vox.com

Location: San Francisco, CA

About: I'm a country girl living in the big city. Growing up my dad was an executive chef for a summer seasonal resort company. Thus, I learned not only how to cook and wield a knife, but also how to appreciate the subtleties of spice and presentation.

Favorite foods: Bread (especially crusty sourdough and ciabatta)
My dad's beef stroganoff (it's heavenly)
Sage spaetzle
Jerky I'm not picky though and love most foods ...

Last bite on earth: Milk and fresh under-baked chocolate chip cookies (made with semi-sweet chips and shortening instead of butter)
