no idea on #1. i would suggest ward III because it has great drinks and usually isn't super-packed, but the drinks are pricey.

for #2: if you like sushi, sushi seki is great, the special platter is affordable (for sushi standards) at $45. you can sit at the sushi bar if you're dining solo. mary's fish camp also has a bar that is cool for dining alone (and it might be easier to get a seat, since the restaurant has a long wait at peak times). really good lobster roll.

do you like small plates + wine? i think those kinds of restaurants are fun with a group -- maybe alta or casellula? too expensive?

zarela on 2nd avenue between 50th and 51st streets. It's a bit noisy downstairs at night (near the bar) but ask for a table upstairs near the window. cuisine is from oaxaca. amazing mole sauce. desserts to die for. great sangria and margaritas. sometimes zarela herself comes around and greets the guests.
