Cook the Book: 'Kneadlessly Simple'

the first yeast bread I ever baked - a simple honey wheat bread that has become the stand in for store bought bread. It came out wonderfully even on the first try.

Since coming back from Ireland I also do enjoy baking (and consuming!) Irish Brown (Soda) Bread. yummmm

Indulging Your Inner Colicchio: Judging a Midterm at the FCI

thank you for posting this! it is a very well written and very insightful piece. as someone who is currently looking to go to FCI - it was great to hear a little bit of life on the inside.

Cook the Book: New South Grilling

German food. Sauerbraten with ginger snap gravy, spaetzle, potato dumplings, potato pancakes, red cabbage. For the past 80 years our family have gathered every New Year's day for a traditional German meal. It has become everyone's (even the non Germans!) favorite meal of the year!

Although I've always helped out - the tradition was quickly handed to me last year when my father was in the hospital over the holiday. As hectic as it was (80 year family tradition + cooking for 30 people + no actual recipes + a little too much champagne the night before) it is one of my best memories in the kitchen & with my family.

For drinks, straight up Gin martini with olives. We tease that the reason I love olives (and gin for that matter) is because of all the ones I would eat from my father's martinis as a kid.
