Padma Lakshmi May Star in Food-Centric Sitcom on NBC

Sure she's hot, but unfortunately, that's not enough to keep a show going.

I give it a week.

Oh wait, she was in Glitter? How can you go wrong?

Nathan's Hot Dog-Eating Contest Returns to Coney Island on July 4

@violetcassis - they have to keep it down or they are disqualified for a "reversal of fortune".

I once went to watch Sonya Thomas in a crabcake eating competition in Baltimore, and after she handily beat her competition, she was walking away with a plate full of more crabcakes, which she said she was going to have for dinner. (true story).

She actually gave the crabcakes to me and my friends because we had gone to root for her, and even made posters to cheer her on. The crabcakes were quite tasty, and Sonya was incredibly nice!

good to know! I love Jiffy's cornbread mix (if made with extra butter), so I would have been tempted to try this out too...

the best cheese cutter i have is the tensioned-wire style. Technically not a knife, but it is great for cutting uniform slices of cheddar and other semi-soft cheeses. (this one: http://tinyurl.com/oxbzrs )

Why kosher salt?

Kosher salt isn't iodized, so it doesn't impart the weird iodine flavor that table salt has.

(we get plenty of iodine in our diets these days, so iodized salt really isn't needed anymore)

Five Guys Burgers

It's like the In-and-Out of the Mid-Atlantic. Every one that I've been to serves the thin fries, fried in peanut oil. They don't get the fries in frozen either. There's always a sign in the restaurant that says where they got their potatoes from that day.

And the small fries size is more than enough for two people. They put a small cup in your bag, then scoop the fries into the bag. I think a large fry order would get you fewer fries, because the cup itself takes up more room!

There's a burger almost exactly the same at an Irish pub here (virginia) called Ned Devines.

It's damn tasty, and they do list the beet and pineapple on the menu.

to piggyback this thread, what about good fish mongers in the area? I'm particularly interested in the Northern VA area, and specifically for sushi-grade fish. The only places I know of are the asian markets (H-mart, grandmart), and the one fish monger in Great Falls (Cannon). Any others?

I love H-mart (we also have a "Grand-mart" here in Virginia). It's where I buy my sushi grade salmon! I make sushi at home every week (I think that's really how I won over my gf), and the salmon is incredible.

It's also where I get my 20 pound bags of rice, 2 pound bag of wasabi (just twice the price of the 4 ounce can!) and durian! (just kidding about the durian. They have it there, but I sure don't want the smell of rotting death in my house!)

I'm sure everyone that reads this site knows this, but if this stuff interests you, you have to watch Good Eats (on Food Network) with Alton Brown. It's basically stuff from the Corriher and McGee books, but in an amusing tv show.

Mixed Review: Thanksgiving Cornbread

Jiffy is a great thing to have around in case of emergencies. I also love it in my favorite Thanksgiving side, corn pudding http://tinyurl.com/ygprkfc
I use cornbread in my dressing as well, but with other breads in the mix and lots of good stuff, so I make a very simpe recipe and leave it out for a few days to dry up. But for eatin' - it's real southern cornbread in a cast iron skillet cooked with bacon grease all the way!

Carbs won't make you fat. You need them, your brain needs them. I am sure you know this. A lot of people (not saying you necessarily) think that carbs only come from bread and the like. But they are in dairy and more, so no need to eat those "bunless burgers" (whoever thought of that anyways?). Eat and enjoy and do so in moderation!

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Portobello Mushroom 'Burgers'

Nigella has a version of this she calls a "steak sandwich" that I love love love. Roast the cap in the oven with lots of butter, parsley, and garlic. When it's done, mop up the juices with your bread before you assemble your sandwich. Smear on some dijon, and apply to face.

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Portobello Mushroom 'Burgers'

Big mushrooms on a roll are not burgers. Ground meat patties on a roll are burgers. At least you put it in quotes.

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Portobello Mushroom 'Burgers'

That is a pretty fair suggestion. Though to be honest my main complaint is generally the extra carbs. I'm doing my best to limit them (not eliminate, I don't believe in dieting by malnutrition ;) ). So really, I just take the beans on the side, and make them the main course :)

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Portobello Mushroom 'Burgers'

@sarahdlr - Why not simply have some beans or lentils as a side dish? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there are any rules that state your protein must come in the form of a main dish at every meal. You can more than make up for the loss of protein in the mushroom patty by including some protein filled side dishes.

You just have to move past the meat-and-potatoes mentality and think a bit more creatively.

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Portobello Mushroom 'Burgers'

This does look pretty good. However, my problem with this, as with so many vegetarian options, is the nutrition. You are taking the protein out of the meal and replacing it with...? In this case little to no nutrition in fact, in most cases something very carb based (rice 'loaf' for meatloaf, for example). Bean-based dishes are the main exception to that. It's one of the things I've found most disappointing as I try to bring more vegetarian options into my life. The protein is almost always lost...

From Recipes

Dinner Tonight: Portobello Mushroom 'Burgers'

I also make a version of this "burger" and it's delicious... I do make it on the stove top for faster results.

And when I travel, I also like the ones offered at Wolfgang Puck's Cafe and Cheesecake Factory...

Needed: a meal that would win a man's heart!

I know I'm late to contribute, but I wanted to share my story. When my fiance and I first started dating I won him over with leftovers! Our first date actually lasted longer than either of us had planned so I offered to make something when he said he was hungry. He said he was fine with leftovers. They happened to include Blue Cheese Macaroni and Cheese and he was smitten. Both with me and with the recipe.

The first meal he made me a week or so later on another date was amazing. Roasted Cornish Game Hens stuffed with wild rice and portobello mushrooms, mashed potatoes, perfectly sauteed green beans...it was fabulous. And he really won my heart by making an extra serving for my roomate who is a definite foody. He won her heart too and she gave me two thumbs up and told him that he had her approval. Six years later we're still cooking for eachother and together and planning a wedding!
