Cook the Book: 'The Pioneer Woman Cooks'

What's your favorite food when drunk?

hot wings, party mix (like Chex), salt and pepper chips...mmmmmmmm

Brand/type of canned tuna

just call me Ross Perot. I, of course, meant tomato.

Brand/type of canned tuna

I'm eating the trader joe's brand right now on top of a cucumber & tomatoe salad - it's not too oily, not to fishy, and the can has big chunks (not all minced and mushed)... I give it a thumbs up

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

It was a kids cookbook - full of "safe" recipes taht required no cooking or sharp knives - not very exciting!

Snapshots from Paris: Perrier with Smaller Bubbles

when I am parched I crave carbonated water - the more carbonated, the better. I like how my throat is cleared of thirst's dry, dusty film after I gulp it down. I am always bummed when fountain soda is on the flat-side. Funny how some people love it and others hate it.

Restaurants: Here's How Getting a Good Review on Yelp Is Done

The Sofa Company offers a similar incentive - 20% off for a review on Yelp or City Search. There was no clause about it having to be a positive review, but I agree that you feel swayed to write a favorable one as you have to email it to the assoiate who assisted you.

Serious Heat: Peppercorns 101

nice - my pepper grinder from Costco is filled with Tellicherry peppercorns. Love the robust flavor.

Sunday Brunch: Sardine Sandwiches with Tomato Jam and Fresh Cheese

I want to try sardines but have been a little leary of eating soemthing with the head and fins attached. Maybe this is a good first time option for me. Or maybe's Monelle's rec about the skinless, boneless ones at Trader Joe's!

Cook the Book: 'Bite-Size Desserts'

sea salt caramels by Little Flower Candy Co. - delightful!

For the laddies- Hottest Food Network Dude?

for the laddies? lad = boy, no?

Video: Hotel Survival with George Egg: How to Cook a Meal in Your Hotel Room

I find this a little bit silly and impractical (perhaps it's supposed to be though). Are you supposed to bring all the ingredients in your suitcase or purchase them at a nearby store?

It seems to me this would be laborious (not what I'm looking for on a vacation) and not necessarily money-saving (I still have to buy the ingredients and I probably won't be able to fly them home with me if I don't use the whole package). If you're really strapped, why not bring a breakfast bar or a ziploc bag full of cereal and buy a carton of milk at the gas station? Or step outside your hotel and find a good deal? I think that's part of the fun of travelling...

Taste Test: Gluten-Free, Vegan-Friendly Shirataki Noodles

can't do it - it's like chewing rubberbands.

Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'

I frequently crave the exotic flavors of tom yum soup (I believe the version with chicken is called tom yum gai). My local vegan restaurant makes it in a vegatble broth base with kaffir leaves, lemongrass shoots, bok choy, plum tomatoes, straw mushrooms, lime juice and a hint of chili. If I'm having it as my main course I'll have them add tofu. YUMMMM!!! (great, now I have to have this for lunch!)

Cook the Book: Coconut Cabbage with Chiles and Green Peas

sounds good, but how was the massive gas you had after eating this?

Cook the Book: 'L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook'

The Mission West Farmers Market in South Pasadena, CA. Favorite vendors are Robin's BBQ Booth and the Corn Maiden Gourmet Tamale stand.

Good Morning and Happy Friday!

love this!!! what is the single red ballon supposed to be though? I took the cluster of smaller red ones to be cherry tomatoes, making me think the bigger one is meant to be something else. What do you think?

your dream (foodie) vacation?

I'm onboard with the Asia trip - Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong...

Summer reading and food: Anyone read these two or suggestions?

Here's a relevant article from the Food section of the LA Times - gives nice little summaries of some of the books mentioned here - and others (Dalia Jurgensen's "Spiced", Jason Sheehan's "Cooking Dirty", John Delucie's "The Hunger", and Katherine Darling's "Under the Table").

Chef memoirs: What hath Anthony Bourdain wrought?
By RUSS PARSONS, June 3, 2009
Anthony Bourdain didn't invent the chef memoir, but he revolutionized it. And judging by the latest crop of books, I'd say he has a lot to answer for.

Summer reading and food: Anyone read these two or suggestions?

Just finished Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. I quite liked it - I'm sure you know the story.

Cook the Book: 'Modern Spice'

Indian - specifically samosas :)

Great Cheeseburgers at La Grande Orange in Santa Monica, California

LGO's burgers are delcious - at least at the original location in Pasadena. I love both the chile burger and the veggie burger. Their deviled egg appetizer is always a good choice too.

Needed: a meal that would win a man's heart!

chicken marbella is a sexy dish - it's never failed me ;)

Okonomiyaki, a Japanese pancake

is there a recipe? how do you access it?

Dinner Tonight: Green Lentil Salad with Baby Spinach and Goat Cheese

I do believe they sell a pre-cooked package of similar lentils at TJ's - would probably work in a pinch.

Siggi's Icelandic Style Skyr

Just wanted to share a newly discovered treat (though probably not new for some of you). Whole Foods sells a yogurt called Siggi's Icelandic Style Skyr (I picked up th pomegranate & passion fruit flavor), which is esssentialy strained non-fat yogurt. The texture is a little heartier then fage and the agave sweetener takes just the right amount of edge off the tartness.

You may recall seeing an episode of Andrew Zimmern's show in which he travelled to Iceland to explore skyr making with a local family. I was intrigued then (though their version was a little more "rustic" for sure), and am happy I've had my first taste of skyr.
