Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

Grew up in Huntington (home of the WV hot dog festival and hot dogs stands too numerous to mention) and the only thing I took with me when I left 11 years ago was my love of slaw on hot dogs. But as the author of wvhotdogblog.com notes, "I don't like the huge "slaw dog" label [in the artwork] because everyone knows that in West Virginia you don't ask for a "slaw dog" - you just get one" - amen!

as with all cook the book ideas, sounds fun. but this one sounds like book deal bait...and from someone who condescends to cook paula's recipes....boo! doesn't sound like there's any heart in it. her whole demeanor is objectionable. bummer.

i hate tgifridays and the lots just as much as most people that frequent serious eats. and guy fieri is eh. but hillbilly hot dogs is fabulous. and a local whole in the wall...not some monster chain restaurant. it, along with the other dozen or so hot dog restaurants in the greater huntington, wv area are gems and are one of the few reasons i go to my hometown at all.

What's the Best Mexican Food Town in the U.S.?

This one is an absolute no brainer. I am a software programmer and fortunate enough to work for a company that allows me to work from home, I try my best to make a point of living in a different city every year, I pack light and go. I've gone from southern cali, mid-west to the east coast and NOTHING compares to the mexican food in San Diego! Travel just 60 miles up the coast to Los Angeles and the difference is night and day, doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same category. San Diego is on the border of Mexico, and the mexican food gets exponentially worse the farther you get from it. Ask anyone who has actually tried mexican food in mulitple cities, I will guarantee the same response, San Diego hands down. Anyone who calls them nachos instead of carne asada chips, or taquitos instead of rolled tacos can automatically be discredited in this discussion. Those of you who have lived in San Diego will know what I mean.

Some of the best burgers! Always very fresh, the meat is juicy and soft consistency...not dried out.

Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

I would love to buy these posters. I used to collect beer related items (cans, bottlecaps, coasters) but they just sit in my attic. These hot dog illustrations are a work of art that would look good on the wall.

Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

Jslander-

Yeah I struggled with whether to title it "slaw dog" or "west virginia hot dog" but I wanted to give respect to the non-WV slaw dogs while still giving a nod to West Virginia as the probable birthplace.

While I'm interested in authenticity in regional foods, I'm not necessarily against variations if it's done with respect - and if it tastes good! The way a lot of these hot dog styles have evolved is by vendors putting their own twist on things.

Also Martie's did offer plain hot dogs, and the WV dog was listed on the menu as a "Slaw Dog". This is in Northern WV, which is not slaw-mandatory territory according to wvhotdogs.com.

My mistake was ordering a "slaw dog with chili" and 5 minutes later I was presented with a hot dog (chili and slaw) and a big steaming bowl of chili. I guess no chili is not an option... not that I would want it to be..

hotdoglover-

Didn't ask what kind of dog they used. I would say it was similar to an all-beef kosher dog in flavor, but no natural casing or anything. It was decent but the garnish is definitely what made it unique and delicious.

sort of like what makes a good hoagie- the balance of the ingredients and how they work together is what does it for me.

Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

I love hot dogs, and the BEST hot dogs are found in North Carolina. There are so many places with amazing hot dogs, and when you order "all the way" here in NC, it always comes with slaw, chili, onions, and mustard, served on a lightly buttered and toasted bun. My boyfriend and many others I know will only eat "pink hotdogs", which many of the places serve, but I like any hot dog.

Hot Dog Of The Week: Slaw Dog

Hawk,

Do you know what brand of dog was served at Marties? At the Hot Dog Hootenanny we had a Carolina Packers dog which most agreed was the worst sampled. Down South the focus is on the toppings; especially the slaw and chili, rather than on the dog itself. To me, if you start with a low quality dog, it doesn't matter much what you do to it. I've found that in states like New Jersey (where I'm from), New York, and Connecticut, the focus is much more likey to be on the frankfurter itself.

How to Make a Choco Taco

I just found found Klondike Choco Tacos at the grocery store. 99cents...of course I snagged one.

If you haven't guessed...I'm way too lazy to make them myself...very cool recipe though!

How to Make a Choco Taco

My daughter requested these for her birthday treat and I was so glad to find this recipe. However, I too was only able to get 6 shells from the recipe, so I had to double it. I am having trouble with the chocolate as well. Because of the 1 cup of water, it is so runny I can't top the tacos with it. I may end up with magic shell on the top or some fudge.

Pie 'N Burger a Purely Californian Experience

I like both Pie n'Burger and Apple Pan. Reviewer doesn't mention the pies at Pie n'Burger and it's just as well as they don't really compete with Apple Pan, even though the latter has only two varieties (apple and pecan).

As for the burgers themselves, it's a tough choice but I would give Apple Pan the edge again for a better built burger and more flavor. I don't understand the member who says they're 'sweet', an adjective that would never cross my mind when describing AP's burgers. I know that people who drink a lot of alcohol often find that most food tastes 'sweet' to them. I don't mean that as any kind of insult to the member, not saying he's an alkie or anything! Just that palates differ immensely according to culinary habits. I doubt *most* burger tasters would find AP burgers 'sweet.'

The comparison between Pn'B and In'O is apt, they remind me of one another a lot. I spend a lot more time in Pasadena than W LA but I consider Apple Pan more of a 'special' taste experience. Anyway they're both great!

You know I go to Cbus all the time and I have been by there and wanted to try it but I heard they only cook it to medium-well and to me that is just overly cooking it and going to take the flavor away from the patty as well as moisture. Anybdoy tried it?
