Cook the Book: 'New Classic Family Dinners'
My Nonna Emma's Risotto a la Milanese....it just doesn't get much better than that....
Cereal with Water and Other Cereal Compulsions
I used to commute on the train every day and there was a guy who ate his cereal with apple juice...
Holy Apples!
My mom used to set aside one fall weekend afternoon and make apple pies...she would make enough crust for 8 to 10 pies, prepare the filling and then assembly line like she would make the pies...wrap in freezer wrap and into the freezer they would go. Then, when we least expected, there it would be....the delicious aroma of an apple pie bubbling away in the oven.....

Embarrassing dining moment, do I go back? (Gross out caution!)
Please go back and bring the 3 year old, some flowers, a heartfelt apology and a big smile. Seriously, if the restaurant has been open for some time, yours is probably not the first to barf there. Kids get a pass....your wife, clogging the toilet, maybe not so much...but it was a stressful situation. I am sure the staff appreciates your cleaning up after your child.
@kris10...you touched on one of my hugest pet peeves (and trust me I have many)...when my son was small and he made a disaster of the table, floor, etc. I would try to clean up as much as possible, but I also left a big tip. Kids don't learn how to behave if they are never exposed to restaurants , but that doesn't mean you abdicate parental responsibility for cleaning up after your own child. My son is now 16 and drives himself to his favorite place to eat---In n Out...and I know he cleans up after himself...

Meat Lite: Potato Crusted Sausage, Leek and Spinach Quiche
Made this for dinner last night....really good!
Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'
I used my mom's Betty Crocker and her Better Homes & Garden cookbooks, but when I moved out on my own, I bought the Silver Palate Cookbook and I still use it...I wore out the first one and am now on my second copy...I still have the old one though because of all my notes....
Food processor feedback needed
I have had my 7 cup Cuisinart for 21 years, use it all the time and it works like a charm.
Cook the Book: 'Zingerman's Guide to Better Bacon'
Because as my son says...."if it's got bacon in it...it's gotta be good."
In Memory of The Silver Palate's Sheila Lukins
Wow...I feel like I have lost a good friend. The Silver Palate Cookbook was my first "grown up" cookbook and it was put to good use...my copy is falling apart. Among the favorites..Chicken Marbella without a doubt, the Carrot Cake...what an amazing cake...and I never, ever make homemade pizza without using the dough recipe from New Basics...the lamb chops made with ginger and soy (altho, I must admit I use the recipe as an outline and use different ingredients--the cooking method makes perfect med. rare lamb chops every time)...RIP

'Top Chef,' Season 6: The Premiere
Okay...loved the season opener...
Jen Carroll, definitely a front runner and love the Amber analogy...
Michael...total ass, but he can cook
Kevin...caught me by surprise, the old "don't judge a book by its cover" adage works here
Jen Zavala...glad she is gone...her gauges were too distracting (even my 16 year old son..who btw was lobbying for gauges earlier this summer..said they were disgusting)
Wolfgang...great judge...well thought out, constructive and witty comments...very close second to Eric Ripert in the classy judge category
As for Mattin....okay the French accent is sexy, but my heart still belongs to Fabio...
For the laddies- Hottest Food Network Dude?
Okay, my bad girl side says Tony Bourdain all the way, he unlike Gordon Ramsay, is vulgar in a classy way (is that possible, actually?). Also would not say no to Michael Symon. Since this fantasy, I will just leave the good girl side at home....
Roadtrip-DeathValley, Utah, GrandCanyon, Albuquerque, St.Louis
Agree with @joyyy about Mountain Oasis in Flagstaff...so good. Also we ate dinner at the Beaver Street Brewery and loved it! Flagstaff is a great place, we were there in May and I was blown away...such a nice community. We stayed in Williams for three nights--closer than Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. Williams is funky, not great food, but decent...there seems to be music coming from every corner. Pancho McGillicuddy's was recommended but we didn't get there. In the Grand Canyon, definitely try the El Tovar for lunch (cheaper than dinner). The Appetizer portion of chili was more than enough, also one of the best chilis I have ever eaten . Lovely room and great service. Also, I say yes to Wupatki and Sedona if you can...Sliding Rock Park just outside of Sedona looks like great fun...we tried to go, but it was totally full on a Saturday afternoon.
What is your fantasy food business?
Okay since this is a fantasy let's go all out....a small B&B on Lake Como that served only the freshest and highest quality foods...simple menu because I would want to enjoy life in Italy too....pastas, salads, grilled fish, etc. My good friend Alison would have to come too, because she would be the pastry chef....
Making peace over beer: What should President Obama serve?
Gordon Biersch Pilsner...served with the garlic fries they make at the restaurant...
The Best Thing I ever Ate ...
Dinner at Commander's Palace in 1990...all those years ago and I still remember each component of the meal....trio of soups--including turtle soup, grouper stuffed with crab and for dessert...bread pudding souffle...so very good....also...a wonderful lunch outdoors in Italy....there was an olive grove and the owner pressed her own olives and those of other farmers and we had bruschetta, grilled sausages, wine and an apricot crostata...wonderful.
Making peace over beer: What should President Obama serve?
Gordon Biersch....Summer Ale and with the beer some of GB's famous and delicious garlic fries served at the restaurant.
Served: Goodbye Waiting Tables, Goodbye NYC, Goodbye Served
Congrats on the job!!! I have enjoyed your column tremendously and hope you are able to continue writing---perhaps a new venture called Managed. As a native Californian, welcome to the left coast....LA is a true adventure, and be sure to get to San Francisco.
French in a Flash: Chaussons aux Pommes with Cinnamon Crème Fraîche
A lovely way to start the morning!
Drive-By Soft-Serve at Yumi Yogurt in Redwood City, California

What to Expect from Tonight’s 'Top Chef Masters' Premiere
Enjoyed the show very much! I liked seeing the chefs out of their comfort zones, I liked seeing how they got creative and just plain enjoyed watching people who are really good at what they do...do it. Plus, I really liked that the chefs were friendly and nice to each other--seemed like real rapport going on among them. Looking forward to the whole season.
Potluck wedding receptions
The potluck wedding reception, the potluck retirement party, the potluck graduation party----in short TACKY. In my humble opinion, if you invite people you feed people. If you cannot afford the full out catered event, then you have your wedding, etc mid afternoon, offer cake and beverages and that's it. My parents were recently invited to a retirement party...the invitation asked all the guests to bring something edible to share, the hosts (and I use the term loosely) would provide paper plates, utensils and water.
Regional Fast Food Chains
I love this post....Last year I was a chaperone on a mission trip to San Antonio. Our group of 60 kids and 20 adults came together with other groups from other parts of the US. Every day in the van driving to and from the work site, the kids would talk about the various fast food places native to their home state. It was funny listening to them talk. Being from California our kids were fanatic about In n Out, and dying to try Sonic. There was a Cane's in the San Antonio airport, must say it was pretty tasty!
Why The Hate For Alice Waters?
I would love to feed my family on all local organically grown products...as Alice Waters advocates but guess what...I have a budget and a teen age son who's favorite phrase is What is there to eat? I consider myself lucky my son is a fruit lover and will always choose fruit over junk food. And while, I love and shop at my local farmer's market as much as I can...sometimes it just gets too pricey...example, last summer I bought 8 beautiful peaches at the farmer's market on Saturday morning for a cost of about $8.00. By Saturday night they were all gone---he ate every single one in a 12 hour period...so I went to the market again on Sunday and bought more....$16.00 for 16 peaches is a lot of money. I do the best I can to feed my family good honest food...I don't buy pre-packaged food, I cook fresh almost every night (yes, after putting in a full day at work) and try to cook with leftovers in mind. For people like me, Costco is a godsend because the produce is good, the meat is good and I can get the most bang for my buck. I know all the arguments against doing just that--carbon footprint, eat local, etc....but we all do the best we can.

Layer sauerkraut in a casserole dish, place pork chops on top and season (I use cracked black pepper, garlic powder and smoked paprika), cover with lid or seal with foil, bake in 400 degree oven for 45 minutes. I like to make mashed potatoes with it, but have also just done steamed veggies on the side.

Cook the Book: 'New Classic Family Dinners'
Gosh, my favorite family dinner!? That's hard . My family is full of great cooks so I guess it has more to do with the atmosphere. So then I would have to go with Christmas eve dinner. 14 cousins plus 16 Aunts and Uncles all eating and drinking and being merry. Usually there's a goose (which doesn't hurt) and floating islands for desert. super yummm, it warms my heart just to think about it.
