I fell in love with these when I had them on a Garuda Air flight and subsequently searched for them high and low. There used to be a pharmacy in Chinatown's Grand St. near the D subway that had a Vietnamese sweets counter in the back. I've gotten them there (though I don't think that pharmacy is there anymore) and also at a Thai restaurant on Baxter St. Hope that helps.

YUM! I have celiac disease and a sweet tooth, so often I go without. Or have some fruit for dessert, which isn't the same at all. I must find an Asian market now! Thanks for the information.

Mares: I called up a Taiwanese friend, and she's not sure what the snack you describe is called either... but we're both fairly certain we've seen it or something similar in Ranch 99. I do know I've definitely seen something like that in a Vietnamese grocery -- though that version was made of sesame seeds and maltose and looked like a large, flat, pancake. Maybe you could check them out?

With regards to a recipe, my understanding is that Taiwanese entrepreneurs are so wonderfully inventive that new munchies come out on the market all the time. Many of these snacks are not made at home (too tedious), but bought...

I may be traveling to Taiwan this summer, so I'll be sure to keep an eye out =p

Sorry for the OT question, but I was hoping that Wan Yan Ling might be able to help me to find a recipe for a traditional Asian treat my daughter was sent by a friend from Taiwan. I don't know what it is called, but my entire family loved it, and I hope to be able to make something similar, if not replicate it.

It was thin squares of a thick paste, comprised of either figs or dates, with nuts, The paste was sandwiched between edible rice paper. I've tried looking for a recipe or any info online, but to no avail. I'd appreciate any info you could share with me, if you are familiar with this treat.
