Fightin' Words on Vodka
I will say this - I am rarely affected by advertising. I like what I like - no Pepsi ad is going to make me drink it over Coke.
The Grey Goose ads are by far the must repulsive ads I have ever seen in my life. It's shocking how pretentious they are and how they can appeal to anyone.
I was never a huge Grey Goose fan, but I now go out of my way NOT to order Grey Goose because of those ads.
As for the taste of vodkas, some are absolutely, 100% smoother than others. Of course the cheap stuff is bad, but compare something like Stoli Gold or Ultimat (not to mention some potato vodkas) to Absolut, and you will definitely taste the difference - maybe not in a mixed drink, but straight, absolutely.

I would put the burger at Royale up against any of these.
To be fair, I always get it with bacon, but I'm sure the regular cheeseburger would be amazing as well.
I think that Zeitzeff is ok too. Definitely comparable to some of the places you reviewed. I had the kobe-style one. It's on an english muffin I think, but still good.
Of course I'd rather have 2 1/2 of Royale's for the same price.

You are not a nut, Kenji !!
I, too, had a VERY BLAND burger at the CORNER BISTRO..
and I DID take mine out in that brown PAPER BAG !
The place is so tiny, nowhere hardly to stand, much less sit, so I took it out, and ate it on a nearby sidewalk...
I found the burger VERY mediocre!
And I like your comparison , when you said that one can still tell a supermodel looks like a supermodel even on her worst day!
I write lots of trip reports, complete with pics on Roadfood.com
mostly regarding burgers and pastrami...

I like Miller's...how about Nathan's?...I've only had their hot dogs from the grocery store...I enjoyed watching 'A Hot Dog Show' on PBS

@kismetized
Thanks! I'm actually heading to the druid for an official burger tasting next week. I'm doing a similar sort of roundup on Boston burgers (with a slightly different slant). Keep your eyes tuned on the Sunday Globe Magazine in a couple weeks - the article should be out then (I've had 8 burgers in the last three days. ouch).

Great write up! I am a Queens transplant to Boston and I must agree with you on the lack of good dogs, burgers, and pizza. I have yet to find an acceptable dog or slice, but definitely check out the Druid Pub in Somerville for a great burger. Flame grilled and beautifully seasoned, these guys have it down pat. The only thing I would complain about is the bread to meat ratio - the bun is a little fluffy for my liking. However, the patty is simply delicious and I think that you will enjoy it. They also have wonderful hand cut french fries, mmm.

Pizzeria Regina in the north end of Boston has awesome pizza its safe to say that it its the best . Also Sidecar in Brooklyn has a great grassfeed beef burger

I'm so excited about this, I live right in the West Village and I need to try so many of these places. I've heard the same thing about the Stoned Crow, though, so maybe you should check that out in your next visit.
Also, as a former Boston-ite, have you not had Pizzeria Regina?! It's completely worth the wait! And if you're looking for a great burger in Boston, go to Tim's Tavern on Clarendon between Columbus and Dartmouth. It's a total dive, I think only frequented by hardcore locals, but the burgers are unreal.

Sorry, guys: you missed the boat on this one. I've been consuming burgers in NYC for 57 years and the best (most CONSISTENTLY best) I've encountered are served at the Riviera Cafe on Sheridan Square in Manhattan. I believe they're grilled as opposed to griddled, but...who cares? Good is good.
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
Summerfield - Oh yes, Miller's is in the book. I love that place.
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
Awww...ain't dat nice? Anyway...
@Hamburger America: Has any one of the thousands of burgers you've eaten in the last seven years been a burger from Miller's Bar in Dearborn, MI?
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
Hey All - Kenji and I have made up, so no more nasty blogging please. We are both professionals and shouldn't be taken so seriously in the comments. And are getting a burger together soon (though not a Bistro Burger).
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
I want a hotdog, a hamburger, two slices of pizza, and, uh, a big bowl of Chinese-Cantonese-American lobster chow mein with crunchy noodles - and rice. If I moved back to NY I'd have to spend three hours a day on a Nordic Trac.
@kenjialtci: you're right, those weird top-split buns have got to go. What are people thinking?
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
I've posted about this numerous times. Gray's Papaya, Papaya King, most of the "Papaya" knockoffs, and Katz's use the same recipe Sabrett natural casing dog. Gray's and Papaya King use the 10 to a lb, while Katz's uses a slightly larger dog. I know distributors as well as the person in charge of private label at Marathon Enterprises who have confirmed this information. Anyone who says that their dogs are made to a special recipe or "made just for them" is lying.

@summerfield
Wow - that's about 50 cents a dog. Not bad! Too bad the kraut doesn't come free too.
Now I just need to find a place to source regular hot dog buns instead of the weird top-split ones we have here.

kenjialtci and kathrynyu, thanks for the info. I'll check out Ed's article. kenjialtci, I have Sabrett's shipped in to me from this link: http://www.pirylis.com/newyorkflavor/index.html
I believe they're on the Jersey side. I order the 5-lb bag of natural casing dogs. It's like having a blue and yellow umbrella cart in my kitchen. By the way, pretty stupendous feat, kenjialtci.

Well that's my first 8 hours in NY planned, what to do with the other 40?
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
@Summerfield: SE Overlord Ed Levine, writing for the NYT, says they're made by Sabrett's parent company:

I'm not sure what brand Gray's uses, but they're great. For my money, the best brand you can buy in the supermarket are Sabrett's. Unfortunately, you can't get those up here in Boston, so when my hoarded stash runs out, I opt for Hebrew National. Not quite as good, but widely available.
Gray's tastes an awful lot like Sabrett's, but they seem a little bit smaller. Maybe you can mimic them by carefully whittling down a Sabrett's dog.
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
I got sidetracked by the photo of the two Gray's Papaya hotdogs. Does anyone know which brand of dogs Gray's serves up?
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
@ Hamburger America.
It's hard to believe that the Corner Bistro burger can be good, after countless disappointing dried-out burgers. I will try the paper bag to go system, though I'm skeptical.
Also, has anyone made it to Sullivan Diner? I haven't been in few months, but based on my several experiences, you will be surprised at how juicy and flavorful their version is.

If this trip were a dream , I don't know if it'd be a fantasy or nightmare...
Nice ambition!

@Hamburger America
George - didn't mean to throw you under the bus - sorry it came out that way. I have the utmost respect for you and your work. I actually look at your book almost every day for various references here and there.
I'll have to give Corner Bistro another try, this time ordering the burger in a paper bag. Maybe they just take extra care of your burger because you've been such a good customer to them? - from the responses on this board and from what other friends have told me, they've had similar experiences to mine at Corner Bistro
I also feel like one of the most important things for a restaurant is consistency - if you can't deliver a good product time after time, then that's a problem.
Truce?
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
If you hadn't thrown me under the bus I'd probably give you that info. For the Bistro I would suggest going back at a peak time and get your burger to go. There's something about the bistro burger that after a few minutes in a paper bag creates a moist burger experience closer to Five Guys. The burger pictured looked way wrong and nothing like what I've eaten there. Unmelted cheese? You got screwed.
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
I completely agree about Bartley's. When I moved up here, everyone said it was amazing, but I definitely found the burgers very bland.
Louis' Lunch is amazing! And I'm not just saying that because I'm from CT. ;o)
And I love McSorely's but I've never had a burger there. Next time I go there, I definitely will.
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
@Hamburger America
Hi George - it's great to get a comment from you. I envy your burger stamina!
I was actually waiting for someone to call me out on the obvious flaw in my comparison (being that I only ate one burger, one time from each place), and I'm glad it's you who did it. My opinions should almost always be ignored anyway.
But even with just one point of reference, I still can't imagine that the burger I had at Corner Bistro could ever be great, even on their best day. There were simply too many fundamental flaws: the beef was flavorless, it was served cold, the salamander wasn't hot enough (resulting in a gray steamed-looking exterior), there was no seasoning, and it was overcooked. I supposed there's the minute possibility that on the day I chose to go there, they didn't get their usual meat delivery, the salamander broke, the regular cook was in the hospital, and they misheard me say medium-rare, but that still leaves no explanation for why it was served so cold that the cheese didn't melt.
Not that I know from experience, but I imagine that it's much like seeing a supermodel the morning after a long night out. She may look bad at the moment, but through it all you can still see that she's a supermodel. With this burger, I simply couldn't see the model through the hangover.
George - a couple quick questions: (approximately) how many other burger joints did you visit in your travels that didn't make it into the book? And also, what's your opinion on broiled vs. grilled or griddled?
12 Burgers in 8 Hours, a Burger Bender
Hey Kenji- Nice writeup, but for the record I've eaten not hundreds, but THOUSANDS of burgers in the last 7 years. Sorry you had a bad one at the Bistro. I too have had the occasional less-than-stellar burger there. But unlike the one burger you had there the other day, I've eaten over 500 Bistro Burgers in the last 18 years. You are a fool to base your criticism on a single burger, especially a bar burger.
